Episode 5029 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)Yay for Monday shows! It was so amusing to see Stephen address the fake Obama coin issue. It’s bad enough to buy chintzy Obama memorabilia, but it’s got to be humiliating to realize you paid $19.95 for stickers. The Michael Steel rap-off is definitely picking up steam. I can’t wait to see how this ends up. The PowerPoint slide presentation cracked me up, I’m guessing because I’ve witnessed many, many bad PowerPoint presentations in my lifetime.

The highlight of the show, however, was the illuminating interview with David Byrne. I loved hearing Stephen’s discourse about being ordinary verses being common – I’d read his thoughts before in a Parade article, but it was interesting to see him discuss it with another brilliant mind. I feel fairly confident that “In the dark of night, who does David Byrne fear David Byrne is?” is one of the best questions Stephen has ever asked a guest. I was blown right away.

When Byrne’s band came on, my husband quipped “Well, it’s nice to see the Polyphonic Spree are still together” which cracked me up. It was a really great song, and Byrne and his band have a very unique stage presence. And how lucky was that fangirl at the beginning of the interlude (and how irked was her boyfriend sitting beside them)?

I can’t wait to hear everyone else’s thoughts on the topics discussed in the interview, or anything else you would like to discuss about the show. Here are some of my favorite quotes from tonight:

  • March came in like a lion that has now eaten us and crapped us back out.
  • I’m really starting to question the wisdom of that retractable dome.
  • It’s the perfect gift to give if you don’t know how much money is worth.
  • Full disclosure: My products are of blatantly inferior quality.
  • Yeah, Stephen, that’s not going to happen.
  • We made it in a meth lab.
  • It turns out that it is butter, but not the kind you think.
  • Those appear to be Montel Williams coins with googly eyes glued on them.
  • Damn, yo! Michelle Bachman is truly dope.
  • Watch it, Chuck, or Steele might pop a cap in your ass, by which I mean a Capital Gains tax.
  • Well, Michael Steel has accepted! Hard to believe …
  • Where’s Michael Steel? He’s not here? But he said “Bring It On.”
  • Maybe he doesn’t understand the rule of a rap battle.
  • The Rap Battle: How To Bring And/Or Receive The Noise
  • IT: that which is being brought, which at this point is “it”
  • Then the medina gets funky and cold, Holla!
  • This rap battle is going to be a real G.O.P. Diddy.
  • When I’m done with him, he’s going to start making sense.
  • I actually keep a computer on the dashboard of my car.
  • I know how I got here, my driver Pablo took me here today.
  • Again, Pablo … Pablo’s responsible for a lot of that.
  • In the dark of night, who does David Byrne fear David Byrne is?
  • I want you to know that very few of my interview gets this deep.

Great show! I hate when I miss the 1130 airing, but I just watched the rerun. I am ready for a rap battle.

Shout out to Pablo! He must be thrilled!

  3. Gaia Faye says:

I wanted Byrne to sing “Like Humans Do,” but that’s only because that’s the only song of his I know outside of Talking Heads. It’s a fun song, though.

If you like laughably bad PowerPoints, do a Google search for the PDF of the presentation that allegedly convinced Pepsi to change their logo. It will blow your mind.

I was quite amused by all elements of the show last night! What a great audience to wait in weather like a Noreaster! They were treated to a great show. (as were we in the comforts of our cozy homes!)

I can’t wait until “it” has been broughten! Stephen’s line was perfect, “Hard to believe…”

  5. Daydream says:

“Heaven, Heaven is a place. A place, where nothing ever happens.” Heaven was also David Byrne and Stephen on the same stage. I love them both. I saw Byrne live in October, and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.

    • Michele says:

Yes! I love David Byrne, with and without Talking Heads. I haven’t had the opportunity to see him live though. Darnit. I really enjoyed that interview and song!

I do so love the addtition of P.K. Winsome and I hope he continues to make appearances now and then.

  6. Lisa says:

I too loved the in-studio snow! And major props go out to the audience members who waited in truly vile weather yesterday to see the show. Talk about dedicated! My favorite was the hip-hop Power Point presentation and for some reason, the “White and Nerdy” fanvid started playing in my head. I loved Byrne’s performance as well — great song!

  7. Val says:

After a long weekend of being sick, that episode was just what I needed. It had me absolutely giddy. Between the snow, “it”, P.K> (I still get a kick out of the “Zenith” plate, and a wonderful performance by David Byrne, I’d say we are in for a good week.

  8. vigwig says:

Great show all around! Stephen’s charm-o-meter was set on high.
The woman on whose lap he sat looked like she was holding in a giant squeal, so cute.

  9. Chuck Noblet says:

The interview was great, as was the song. And I’m loving the P.K. Segments, I hope they do more.

  10. SazzrahUK says:

Loved the bit with P.K, and the interview with David Byrne, but for some reason fake snow just does it for me…I found the intro way funnier than I should have, so voted for that!

  11. mrtigger001 says:

“I hope you’re a great tipper, because you’ve just been served!” I’m using that line from now on.

Michael Steele Rap Battle segments are now 2 for 2 in earning my vote.

  12. Tiger says:

when I was watching earlier my internet left me during the interview, leaving David Byrne stuck with a very strange expression. if I skipped the performance, it wouldn’t be a first. (sorry!)

although I hear there is lap-sitting-on. probably shouldn’t miss that cuz someone will mention it later and I will be out of the loop.

I like this new set-up for musical guests, even if I don’t really care for the musical guests themselves. I have very narrow musical preferences and I doubt they will ever be indulged on TCR.

    • ColbertGirl27 says:

Haha. I’m not often a big fan of the musical guests either…even if they can serve as good subjects for interviews at times. My favorite musical guests so far have been Tony Bennett, Barry Manilow and John Legend…possibly because I like to hear Stephen croon alongside them;) Who do you want to see on the show? I hope they eventually show one of your favorites!

Very cool interview and performance. Would have loved to see more of the dancers onstage. I was pretty fascinated with their use of the chairs and of the space to further reinforce the song’s themes.

And the PowerPoint presentation reminded me of spending every Sunday at mass cringing at the PowerPoint presentation of the lyrics to the songs we sing. They’re either completely wrong (which I find strange, because you can just copy the lyrics of the Net or from the hymn book) or the person operating the slideshow was either too fast or too slow that the lyrics being flashed doesn’t match the lyrics we’re singing.

And the person who was tasked to create the slideshow was way too happy playing with the effects (I’m guessing they chose “random effects” at every click of the mouse) and with the available clip arts.

  15. mrtigger001 says:

Was there anything that happened in the mainstream news that involved a really bad PowerPoint at a major event? I hope I’m not missing some kind of side reference with Stephen’s PowerPoint.

I don’t think there was a single off moment in that entire show, what a blast, I loved it all. David Byrne is such a consistently talented & interesting artist. I enjoyed the substance of the interview, in part because I’ve had similar thoughts about people I’ve known – that many artists feel contentment is “boring”, so they’re obliged to lead difficult (& thus “interesting”) lives. Nice to see a little bit of the reflective (and contented) man peek through the character.

  17. ColbertGirl27 says:

DB, thanks so much for referencing the Parade article! I would have never made that connection in a million years…plus it was great revisiting one the best articles written on Stephen…and from Parade no less!

Glad to see P.K. Winsome is making recurring appearances. He’s such an amiable yet dubious character just like Stephen!

The “dancers” rotating and falling in and out of the chairs freaked me out a bit during the performance. In fact, the performance itself veru much reminded me of the ordinary v. common discussion which Stephen brought up during the interview just prior.

  18. another great episode! the interview with David Byrne was my favorite! “Again, Pablo..” lol! love it!

and thank you so much for posting the link to the Parade article. i had forgotten about that interview. it was great to read an inspiring story at the end of a day that just didn’t go right. :)
