Episode 5028 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

By DB on February 27th, 2009 ·

R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)As we end the shows for this week, I have one quick question: did anyone catch the “now we play the waiting game” reference in the intro segment? I hate it when I don’t get the more obscure references. I bet one of you Zoners will know, though.

I don’t know how long it’s going to take for me to get sick of Twitter references on the show, but that hasn’t happened yet and I’m lapping them up. 140 characters at a time, of course. And the Viking hat and dripping chicken make me wonder if Stephen Colbert missed his calling as a prop comic. If only those yellow braids had been red curls, we might have another Carrot Top in our midst! Or, you know, not so much.

Stephen’s discourses on Michael Steele bringing the streets into the Grand Old Posse are yet more evidence that Stephen Colbert is the whitest dude ever. And again we got a wonderful, warm and humorous interview. Kris Kristofferson definitely got all the best lines in with this interview, and his squinty laugh was very contagious. The interviews this week have been so genuine and entertaining, and it’s was a fantastic show ending with Kristofferson singing one of his greatest hits, “Help Me Make It Through The Night.”

As always, please comment away about some of your favorite moments in the comments. Here are some of mine:

  • Oof, who hoped?
  • Oh, and “friends” are what you used to have before you joined Twitter.
  • That is nine minutes in, you are busted baby!
  • If poor people stay healthy, where will we rich go to harvest organs?
  • Although admittedly the tip is the most sensitive part.
  • I can’t believe you kissed John McCain with that mouth!
  • The Swedish model, and not the good kind that marries Tiger Woods.
  • Economy Built By IKEA
  • Does My Häck Look Big In This Tunic?
  • I say, In the name of Odin, let us take up our shields and our battle axes and rain death and damnation on our foes!
  • See Zepplin Lyrics For Details
  • He’s not just taking it to the streets, he’s taking it to the cul-de-sacs!
  • And that is not typical political bullshiznit.
  • Why do you think Flava Flav wears that national debt clock?
  • You and me are going to lay down some dope yet fiscally responsible rhymes
  • RAP-RESENT!!!!
  • That’s a cheap shot there, Stephen.
  • My dad caught me exfoliating once and he whipped me.
  • I kinda like the idea of freedom’s just another word for Stephen Colbert.
  • But if you did it tonight, I’d get great ratings.
  • And now, regrettably with his clothes on, Kris Kristofferson.

I haven’t watched this episode yet (The Daily Show will begin in 5 minutes), but I’m glad I read the spoilers!

The only reference I can think of for “and now we play the waiting game” is Homer Simpson on the Mr. Plow episode – After his “Mr. Plow commercial airs he says “And now we play the waiting game…..[waits a few seconds]… the waiting game sucks. Let’s play hungry hungry hippos”

Me too! That is what I thought of–I can still hear Homer’s voice!

i was trying to figure out the waiting game comment too, no luck yet. but i did catch a grammatical error, the plural of cul-de-sac is culs-de-sac, not cul-de-sacs.

Actually, both plurals are listed in most dictionaries, and it’s pretty much inevitable that cul-de-sacs will become the standard. See Steven Pinker’s The Language Instinct for really interesting examples of other linguistic usage changes over time (among other things). Fabulous book!

i have recently finished pinker’s the stuff of thought, and it was pretty decent (though it was a little more stuff than thought). i definitely agree that languages change over time. however, cul-de-sac is french of course, and in french would never be pronounced cul-de-sacs. its the same thing that bugs me about people pluralizing languages that have no plurals, like kimono in japanese.

Yes, the word is French. But in this example, it’s better described as an English word of French origin.

As any imported word becomes commonplace in use, it becomes an English word, and eventually takes on English rules of pluralization. Happens all the time – one of the reasons English has a notably larger and more varied lexicon than many/most other languages.

I was also a little confused by the “and now we play the waiting game” thing. But I loved all the Norse mythology stuff!

With all of Michael Steel’s attempts to “keep it real,” I think my favorite wtf quote from him lately was his offering Bobby Jindal some “slum love” the other day. For real. I am hoping so much that he actually comes on the show. So. Much.

Great episode!

For me, the highlight of the show was the Twitter segment. I am addicted to Twitter though. Just ask my Twitter “friends.” :-)

I thought the Viking segment was funny but I kept focusing on whether or not the chicken was going to drip on Stephen’s suit and I couldn’t concentrate on what he was saying. I don’t know why I let myself get distracted by those kinds of things… One of the many joys of being OCD, I guess.

The waiting game quote sounds very familiar to me but I can’t remember where I’ve heard if before. I want to say it’s from a movie but I can’t remember which one.

I was stuck on the drippy chicken, too! I guess you’re not the only one :)

I thought Michael Steele was the funniest segment, although Barack Obama’s fake twitter of “LOL Mitch McConnell looks like a turtle” comes in a close second. Stephen trying to use hip hop terms in the whitest way possible was just too much for me.

From twittering to the Vikings? Someone over there has been reading my cartoons. This link will explain: http://ivcaffeine.com/2009/02/27/241/ You’re on notice, Colbert! Money will satisfy all feelings LOL.

Big Wink ;)

Loved the Norse mythology bits in that WØRD — I hadn’t been expecting that. It’s so much fun when those things come up almost at random; I was reading Walter Moers’ Rumo and His Miraculous Adventures a while back and Rumo suddenly found himself conversing with the Nurn Oak … whose name was Ygg Drasil. I giggled just as madly at that reference. (Yes, I’m a dork.)

If Wednesday’s show was a single, last night’s show was a homerun. I started laughing at the twitter sketch and didn’t stop until Kristofferson started singing.

I had to vote for The Word…there’s something about umlaut jokes that just get me every single time. And you really can’t beat Stephen dressed up in a Viking hat with a roasted chicken on a sword, dripping all over his desk.

Loved the Word with all it’s Norse mythology references! Also like the GOP rap bit. Very funny!

So, am I just really old fashioned or did anyone else find all that Twittering done during Obama’s speech very rude? I thought it was funny that McCaskill’s mom called her out on it!

Cute interview with Kristofferson. I was half expecting someone to be at least partially nude after that.

You’re not alone on your Twitter feelings:)

If Kristofferson had taken off his clothes, his guitar would have covered him….but I think it’s best he stayed as is:)

I think the waiting comment was because he just mentioned the Kindle and was waiting to get one for free cause he mentioned it on air.

Thanks, this makes sense. I was thinking more along the lines of Stephen vs. Kindle being the ultimate electronic book or something. Which does not compute at all to me.

I guess it IS possible to overthink Colbert, lol

That was a very lovely photo of Tiger Wood’s wife Elin (née Nordegren). Tiger and Elin just had their second child, Charlie Axel, born February 8.

Stephen’s references to A Star is Born — I saw the Streisand-Kristofferson version of the movie when it was released; I was a teenager. Only later, when I saw the original 1937 version of A Star is Born with Frederic March and Janet Gaynor, did it become my favorite weepy “chick flick” of all time. I love that film.

Was excited to see Stephen talk about Norse mythology, because it’s something we haven’t really discussed in class. :)
