I love the playful conflict between “Stephen Colbert” and Eleanor Holmes Norton, and I couldn’t be happier about the fact that they seem to love it just as well. Here’s a short video from Politico in which she thanks Stephen for bringing the issue to the rest of the nation’s attention:
Take a stroll down memory lane with these other clips featuring Stephen and the District’s delegate.
This just reaffirms the fact that Eleanor Holmes Norton is my favorite recurring guest on the show. Clearly, she’s an it-getter.

I heart Eleanor. I wish she we were my rep, she is the best in the House! So approachable. I am glad that when DC gets voting rights, it will serve as a tangible example of the power of TCR in real politics. Stephen will definitely deserve some of the credit for making that day possible.

I love her so much. Her segments are the ones that I always go to first to truly delight my comedy-loving friends that are unfamiliar with Stephen.
I love watching their reactions to these clips. I must confess that her first appearance had me googling away about her. She is one awesome lady.
Yay! Stephen does deserve the keys.

I agree, she’s got to be the best recurring guest. And I’m even including Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Brian Greene, so that’s saying something! What I love about those segments is that they have such a fabulous rapport. The interactions are always loose and relaxed, and it’s so clear that they enjoy sparring with each other. Not to mention the golden funnies that come out…
“Dandy’s a strong word. This is a family show.”
“People call me bookish, and I think that’s code.”
“Then why are you undressing me with your eyes, Congresswoman?”
“Madam, I do not swallow.”

She is a *fabulous* woman: feisty, funny, and persistent. And she makes a perfect foil for Colbert. I’m so glad he was able to help her cause. And it’s incredibly classy of her to give him so much credit for his assistance.
YOU ROCK, MA’AM! Good luck with your quest. :D

I just wanted to share a bit from a 2007 post from dcist.com about this awesome woman:
” ‘I will not yield, sir,’ she firmly stated in response to Rep. David Dreier’s (R-Calif.) request. ‘The District of Columbia has spent 206 years yielding,” she bellowed. “To the people who would deny us the vote, I yield you no ground.’
“The anger was raw, real and unrehearsed. It represented 16 years of fighting for the cause, seeing it through ups and downs and changes of government that provided both hope and concern.”
Fabulous. More power to Eleanor Holmes Norton!

Eleanor Holmes Norton rocks my world. I wish she were my representative, too. I love how this has a mixture of both serious and silly footage. What an amazing, amazing woman.

I really hope that when the DC Voting Rights Act gets passed that Ms. Norton makes an appearance on the show. She is, by far, my favorite, favorite Friend of the Show and the banter between she and Stephen cannot be rivaled by any other.

Well, guys! She is my representative and I have to saw I’m proud of her. Her rapport with Stephen is great and DC’s lack of representation in Congress was brought to the nation’s attention. I’m sick and tired of paying federal income taxes and not have a voice in Congress. This is one of the reasons why many people move to the Maryland and Virginia suburbs once they get a foothold in the area. I really hope this bill passes and when it does – Stephen rightfully deserves the keys to the city. I want to thank him for allowing Norton to bring this issue to a wider audience.
Go, Eleanor, go!!!

i was tickled to learn that my congressperson had been interviewed in BKAD, but how awesome would it be to have Ms. Holmes-Norton as your rep?
I love her segments with Stephen. I get so excited whenever she is on the show. I make my friends watch, and my boyfriend. We can’t watch TDS/TCR and have any interruptions. he has his sports, i have my hour of television…hehehehehehee
i cant wait til i can get to NY again. This time i’ll bring him, let him see the madness.
right, sorry, the topic.
I really hope that she is able to get him the key to the city. how great would that be? and what an enormous example of the influence Stephen has on the “real world”
*cant wait*
I also hope that Ms. Holmes Norton will be on the show in person when DC gets their voting rights.

The House and Senate have both passed their bills in favor of giving D.C. a vote, but the Senate version of the bill added an amendment that will invalidate a lot of D.C.’s gun laws (ouch). Here’s hoping that the amendment doesn’t throw the proverbial wrench into the legislative gears …

YAY!!!!
Yeah, the gun laws are a loss, but many of them were ineffective anyway. Those laws are federal since DC is a federal-controlled entity. Now, if a lower government body dealt with this (like with other states) then it’s not a problem. But, DC is not a state. Eventually this issue will have to be addressed. But the bill is a step in the right direction.

I don’t know much about the US system of government….. But if she gets a vote in Congressm shouldn’t DC then get a Senator too seeing as other Americans have 2 senators and vote in the house?

Yeah, but one thing at a time. We’ve got to deal with the House first. The constitutionality of this law will probably be questioned before anybody even thinks about the Senate.

She is the absolute greatest. Every appearance she makes on the show is instant classic and I sure am rooting for DC to get the vote!

I better see Stephen Colbert right next to Eleanore Holmes Norton, true friend of comedy, at the celebration of DC ‘winning’ representation.
