Stephen Colbert string dances with Conan O’Brien on ‘Late Night’

The video is up for last night’s surprise appearance by Stephen Colbert on ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien’. The string dance (and eyebrow dance) is not to be missed, and the tie up ending is just adorable. Enjoy!

Woot! A rare NBC video I can watch in Manila! Thank you, thank you! :)

I was going to say the same thing! (Except Italy, not Manila.)

The eyebrows were awesome. And I hate to say it, but Stephen’s better at it IMHO.

But how small Stephen looks – I forget how long Conan’s legs are.

Yeah, Conan makes Stephen look like an ant to me. Stephen’s eyebrow and string dance was awesome. I have to agree that Stephen does it the best.

I’m so sorry I missed that last night – but thanks for posting the clip so quickly.

  4. Laaaura says:

I, too, must say that Stephen is better at the string dance. The man’s got rhythm! Right from the start he was moving his hips in time with the beat of the music. I’d say I liked the eyebrow dance even more than the hips dance lol.

And yeah, Stephen really does look tiny next to Conan. Haha. Oh yeah, and I love how Conan was then laughing at himself for being so out of breath after just doing a string dance.

  5. Val says:

The audience reaction is just priceless. It goes from booing to rampant cheering, and then dissatisfaction when Stephen ties Conan up, and finally crazy cheering again – love it!

  6. Tiger says:

the cheering when Colbert came out made me grin. they’re all angry, but the dude actually shows up and somehow they get over it in a real hurry.

veryyyyy fun dancing going on. I think my fav parts were the Colbert eyebrows dancing (he ought to use that on the show!) and then Conan cutting the invisible strings from around his wrists!

    • Michele says:

That was adorable! I also really loved the eyebrow dancing and Conan cutting himself loose. Thanks for posting the video DB!

  7. Lisa says:

ZZZOOOMG! Stephen and Conan doing the invisible string pocket dance! Utterly fantastic and hilarious, especially with the invisible string eyebrow dance. Hehe… I also enjoyed the “Professional Wrestling Audience” running joke.

  8. lvtcr says:

Conan said it best, “He’s very good!” I couldn’t agree more!

The whole dance/interaction was awesome. One of my favorite moments was when Conan asked Stephen how he got in…you could just see Stephen formulating his answer–the wheels in motion. Great improv!

Great video! It proves what we already know:

    Stephen, you da MAN!!!!

  10. chaobell says:

I stayed up late to watch this and it was so very worth it.

And yeah, Stephen did decisively pwn Conan.

How tall is Conan, anyway? Like 7′ 10″ or something? Holy frap.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • ColbertsLassInNC says:

Well, Chao… according to IMDb, Conan is 6′ 4″ (1.93 m) … gotta love that database!

Our poor ‘lil Stephen looked so short in comparison (being around 5’10″), but incredibly handsome as usual…

      ;)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • chaobell says:

Man. I think Conan’s legs alone are probably taller than I am. And poor Jon looks like a Hobbit next to him.

and yes even when he is being dwarfed by Conan, Stephen is still lovely. :D

  11. Gabby says:

The String Dance IS CONANS!! No one will EVER do it as good as him!! And trust me people have tried. Did you not notice Stephen got BOOed of stage! The point I’m trying to make is Conan Rules All!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • ColbertGirl27 says:

You’re fighting a losing battle here. Stephen is the winner;) He even threw in an eyebrow move.

      • Gabby says:

Conan Invented The String Dance…everyone who has tried to attempt it HAS FAILED. FAILED I TELL YOU!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  12. madinirose says:

Yeah, I noticed the BOOing and it was awesome. Stephen took it all in stride and didn’t miss a beat.

  13. blt says:

The whole invisible string dance/eyebrow dance made me giggle like a crazy fangirl. I wish Conan could stay in New York so that we could enjoy more Conan/Stephen/Jon madness. I wish Conan all the best. As for Stephen, more eyebrow dance, please (grabby hands)!

Is there any greater battle than a dance battle? I think not.

  15. Dee says:

I was in the audience of Conan when Stephen was the guest and their chemistry after the show is amazing! And yes, the audience was so into Conan that they didn’t care who the guest was..until Stephen showed up for the “future” segment and the Jingle Bell Roch duet and the audience went ballistic, just like in the clip above!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  16. looped linear says:

Very funny contest. Loved how an audience member yelled, “Go for the wrist!” LOL!! it’s sweet that they have so many fans in common.

But Conan string-dances like a white boy–welded at the hip. He may have invented it but, sorry, Colbert perfected it. He is the Man! Fluid hips *and* mobile eyebrows. Da Winnahhh!! =D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  17. ColbertsLassInNC says:

I am still *FanGirl-ing* over the eyebrow dancing, I thought that was hysterical!

It would have been so cute had Jon Stewart also been there, on Stephen’s right, to show the difference in height between the trio, too cute.

Even though Stephen is my fave, it just goes to show… all wonderfully talented and handsome men come in different sizes, eh!? ;)

Comic genius! Thanks for posting that.

Oh, that was fantastic. Stephen’s hips can’t be beat — we’ve known that since “Dancing Muchachos”. ;) Thanks very much for posting!

    • jennie says:

OH – Don’t mention Dancing Muchachos! I start swooning just thinking about it.

I just hope DB doesn’t think of posting a video of that this week…

  20. MaryLovesColbert says:

This was awesome!! Stephen’s really got control of his hips – whoo! I’m so glad I stayed up for it, even if I was tired this morning.

forget the hips, the eyebrows were what got me cracking up.

  22. Jenny with a Y says:

Thank goodness for the Internets! My cable went out last night. I couldn’t even get the local channels to work. This is awesome!!! It totally made my day. I know I’m biased but, IMHO, Stephen beat Conan at his own thing. Loved his pocket dance, loved the eyebrows, loved his energy last night…

I hope things go well for Conan but I hate it that he’s going to be so far away from NYC. I always look forward to Stephen’s and Jon’s appearances on his show, and you can’t beat these late night feud situations either!

Okay, now that I’ve commented, I’m going to watch the video a few more times. :-)

  23. Viviane says:

I really can’t believe NBC let me watch that, they always block the contents to my country…weird…auhauha this is one of the sillyest things I’ve ever saw! and i LOOOOVED!

    i wanna watch this endless…

  24. Ann G. says:

Stephen has amazing hips, to go with his excellent sense of rhythm. Of course he can beat Conan at his own dance. :-D

The eyebrow dance was hilarious, as was the “professional wrestling audience” joke and the way Stephen embraced the booing. It was a magically funny appearance.

I wish Conan every success in his new gig, but I’m going to miss him in NY. It’s such a shame he’ll be so far away. OTOH, now that he’ll be on earlier, I might actually watch his show once in a while. I know, I’m a terrible, terrible fan.

  25. forsakinghalfloves says:

I think the camera angle really emphasized (to an almost ridiculous extent) their height difference. Love it! :) Very cool and very fun. Thanks again for the video. :)

  26. wren says:

There is so much to love about this clip. But my favorite part is the swagger in Stephen’s stride as he enters. Very West Side Story. Also, that he’s (half) out of character, with nice floppy hair. And yes, Stephen’s got better moves!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  27. colbertican says:

That is possibly the cutest thing I have ever seen.
Did anybody else find Conan to be looking a little more giant than usual, or is it just me? I think Stephen may have just been standing a little further upstage.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • wildlymissingthemark says:

i think it was the upstage angle that made him look so small, like he could fit in dennis kucinich;s pocket.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • jennie says:

Even if the height difference isn’t soooo much, it’s the fact that Conan’s legs are so long (even for his height) that his hips come up to Stephen’s chest. I think that really messes with the perception.

    • Holly says:

when Stephen came in from the back of the stage, it looked like he was about a half-a-mile away! I realized as he got closer, it was because he looked so small compared to Conan. I agree w/ the comment the Conan’s long legs emphasize any height difference.

also, I LOVEd the enthusiastic cheering from the crowd when Stephen showed up (that was kindof overwhelming actually!) as well as the booing. perfectly appropriate. professional wrestling audience indeed.

And the dances were fantastic. :)

i always write the last comment on these threads when no one even reads them anymore…;) but i was thinking how great it was that stephen was on vacation and able to join conan in his last week. it was a perfect way to send conan off, in a perfectly silly way, just suitable for conan’s show.

I just noticed something. Conan refers to Stephen by his last name, but Stephen refers to Conan by his first name. What does this mean?

    • GabbyD says:

i think its just coz thats what their famous showbiz names…

when u say conan, its gotta be conan obrien…

when u say colbert, its gotta be stephen colbert..

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • ColbertGirl27 says:

Oh, of course. I’m just so deep into the fandom that I think of him as “Stephen” rather than “Colbert.” Haha.

For alliterative purposes? Haha. :) “Conan and Colbert” sounds better than “Conan and Stephen”

  31. John says:

That was awesome! The eyebrow dance was priceless, and Stephen really does do it better. He just goes right with the beat. Must be those freakishly strong legs of his. :P I also love the audience reaction, going from booing to huge cheers to booing to huge cheers again!
