Episode 5024 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)
By
Hey, Zoners! What did you think about this episode of ‘The Colbert Report?’ Was there a specific moment or joke that you particularly liked? I thought the interview with Adam Gopnik was very interesting. I also enjoyed the farewell to Conan O’Brien, but the highlight of the show for me was definitely the segment with Ed Colbert. I really liked his on camera personality and it was fun watching Stephen interact with him.
Here are a few memorable quotes from tonight’s show:
- You know what Abe here needs? A little fun. Oh my God! Oh my God! … He was a unicorn. Mary Todd wasn’t crazy after all!
- My gut tells me everybody is right. I haven’t been this confused since the last time I watched ‘Wheel of Fortune.’
- Hey, I’m talking to my brother!
- I’m not a public figure? … I did run for office. Have you ever watched this show?
- Stephen Colbert: Who do you really think is right? Ed Colbert: Who’s paying me?
- John F. Kennedy. Oh my God! It was suicide!
- Darwin drove a stake through God’s heart with his words.
- I’m going to mention that to my wife tonight. Honey, I’m very tolerant of your beliefs.
- Hi! I didn’t see you there because TV only works in one direction.

Ed Colbert hands down (and David Ross, can’t forget about him, hehe). I was pleasantly surprised when he showed up. I was like, “Oh! That’s interesting…” And when Ed ended with the “Who’s paying me?” line, that sealed the deal. Very lawyer thing to say, and even Stephen was amused.
Here’s hoping for more guest appearances by Stephen’s family during apropros segments.

I think there’s some real potential there with bringing in family members… or at least have Ed on as the recurring “lawyerly opinionist”.

I’d love to see his wife Evie on… especially since she hails from an improv background like Stephen.

That Conan tribute was so sweet, You can really tell that Stephen is genuinely a fan of Conan.
p.s. I think he is the only other person on the planet that can pull off the String Dance. Conan needs to come on his show!

“I’m talking to my brother!” Haha, love it! :)
Correct me if I’m wrong, but TDS and TCR didn’t have a toss this week, yes? Thanks. :)
And I personally think Kate Winslet should have already won an Oscar. She was brilliant in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and in Little Children. :)

There were no tosses this week, you’re correct. And it looks like next week is reruns :(
I also have to agree about Kate Winslet. I’ve been a fan of hers since ESotSM, and I find her a completely compelling actress. In fact Eternal Sunshine is my favorite movie.
This episode was sort of perfect. Between Ed, my love for The DaColbert Code, and a wonderful tribute to my third favorite late night host, it was a great night for the show.

Thanks. Eternal Sunshine is also a favorite of mine. :)
Oh, and was that a set of Everyman’s Library on the lower shelf?

Reruns?! Noooo! :) That explains the references to the Oscars & tribute to Conan last night and not next week…
All in all another great ep! I can’t pick a favorite…I love it when that happens!

Reruns? Why did you have to point that out. I did not know that until now. 1 whole week without new shows. We shall all die next week.
This was a really great episode. I hope he has more family on. I loved Ed’s “whose paying me?”

*sniffle* Reruns… Let the withdrawal begin.

It was pretty neat to see Ed Colbert on. I loved their interaction and the, “Hey, I’m talking to my brother!” Haha.
And I really loved The DaColbert Code and the farwell to Conan. Great show all around! =)

I thought the tribute to Conan was adorable. It’s a shame he’s moving out to L.A. and that he, Stephen, and Jon can’t do anymore bits together. But, I’m happy for him that he’s getting such a sweet new hosting gig too.

Awwww, the Conan tribute was so sweet. I wonder if the new Late Show will really impact TCR’s ratings negatively as so many TIVO things now.
The rapport with his brother was a lot of fun, is he the oldest brother? He looks a lot like his father.

I think Ed is the second oldest. If memory serves it goes Jimmy, Eddie, Mary, Billy, Margo, Tommy, Jay, Lulu, Paul, Peter, Stephen. *Please* let that be right. And no, I am not obsessed. Why would you think that?;)
He does look like him! His nose especially:)

According to imdb, Eddie is the second oldest. Good job! I hope to reach your level of obsessiveness someday:)

I loved the segment with his brother Ed Colbert. How cute. Plus, it further confirmed my consternation when it comes to copyright. Thank you Stephen! I believe this was the first REAL “Formidable Opponent” segment…and Stephen was only the middle man in the segment:)
My favorite part of this segement was when Stephen asked Ed whom he would defend in the case if Stephen was paying him. Ed’s response: “Sheperd Fairey.” I just loved the mutual understanding between brothers at that moment.
Also thought it was classy to sign off wishing good luck to Conan….especially since they will have competing timeslots despite the reality of TIVO, etc.

Anyone else wish he had talked about weatherizing your home or held a town hall in honor of Valentine’s Day? Well, I happily stumbled upon “Stephen’s Valentine Videos” on Colbert Nation this morning!

I was really hoping for a sequel to “Charlene”!! Thanks for the heads up on the video mash-up! Stephen is just so adorably sexy.

I liked to see the Da Colbert code again. all the absurd connections always get me. when I saw Second City Touring Co. last year they had a sketch like that, there two secret-agent types were exchanging dozens of words with the same sorts of tenuous connections as their way of slowly communicating classified information.
the lawyer stuff was interesting too. I paint on a very casual level, but I truly prefer to paint either without references, or on site, or from a picture I’ve personally taken. I have used internet photos but I’m less comfortable with that.
I liked how Ed Colbert (who apparently is no longer Eddie as he is in the siblings spiel) was able to defend every single side. arguments for any side can seem so plausible, and that is why I am an eternally confused person!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but at least according to Wikipedia Conan’s not moving until June? Isn’t it a little early to be bidding him farewell?

His last Late Night is next Friday in order to prepare for the move.

yes, and considering next week is re-runs, Stephen’s farewell was perfectly timed…

I voted for the segment with Ed. I had been wondering if Stephen would bring up the whole Fairey/AP thing and I loved the way he did it. And I think his brother had the best line of the show with “Who’s paying me?”. Ha ha! I wonder what Ms.I thought of that whole exchange.
I still enjoy seeing Lincoln’s skull pop up on occasion and the unicorn horn made me LOL! I found Gopnik to be a bit irritating, but it wasn’t a bad interview.

My favorite segment was also the one with Ed Colbert. He was a great guest, and I loved their interaction. (“ColberT or Colbert?” “ColberT.” “See you in hell.” LOL) How convenient to have an expert in copyright law in the family when you need one to be on your TV show! I think Stephen should try to have more of his siblings on as guests.

I lol’ed at that too. How dare “Ed” not use Stephen’s way of pronouncing “Colbert”? But he is family, so he’s automatically an it-getter anyway.
Btw, it’s not necessarily about Stephen seeing his brother in hell that’s funny, but as always it’s about how he delivered that line glibly. Hilarious!

I was just watching an old episode (during breaks, I try to catch up on some of the episodes that broadcast during the year before I started watching — thanks CC archive!) and in a clip from 2/22/06, Stephen mentions his brother Ed and puts him on notice! (though without adding him to the board)
He was mad at Ed for not getting him the rights to a video clip of an Olympic event, even though he represents the IOC. Loved the casual mention, and off-handed on-notice alert! :) Especially now that we know a little more about Ed, and that he actually probably could get Stephen the rights to an Olympic vid clip.
