Episode 5022 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

By Jenny with a Y on February 11th, 2009 ·

R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)So, Zoners, what did you think about this episode of ‘The Colbert Report?’ For me, the highlight of the show was “The Wørd: Loyal Opposition.” I also enjoyed the Shout Out! segment. I got a kick out of Stephen’s character breaks. He never seemed quite ready for that graphic did he?

Here are a few notable quotes:

  • Visa: It’s everywhere you want to be, unless that place is a Jimmy Buffett concert.
  • It’s a coin toss – If people still had coins.
  • I don’t ever want to stop somebody applauding me.
  • Not Maine! Then where would we get our deodorant that doesn’t work?
  • Grand Old Pity Party
  • That would be offensive. [Not As Much As 'Barack The Magic Negro']
  • Bill Kristol Meth
  • To the victor goes the spoiled economy.
  • That is pharmaceutical grade hive jive.
  • ‘Hotties of the Persian Gulf’ calendar

Please feel free to leave a comment or add a write-in vote for something not included in the poll.

I liked the whole thing – but ended up voting for the Word.

Favorite ad lib in a long time was “that’s why lobsters are red” in the interview.

And ‘Hotties of the Persian Gulf’ reminded me of the hilarious ‘Hotties From History’ in John Oliver’s Bugle audio newspaper.

I know this is a few days late…and I’m just catching up… but YES I absolutely thought of Hotties from History. well basically you’d only have to say Hotties of pretty much anything and my mind would turn to the Bugle…

There is nothing better than his reaction every time he hears, “HEY!”

I voted for the Robert Ballard interview, but my opinion was bias; my brother worked with him on one of his Titanic expeditions. :)

Still, one of my favorite parts each time is The Word. It is so well written and I can’t help but lol.

OMG! How cool! I voted for the interview as well because I’m such an ocean-lovin’ geek and I find Ballard fascinating. Stephen seemed to enjoy talking with him too.

The Word came in a very close second for me. It was just so satisfying!

And the gift of that flag from one of his former security guards was very sweet.

Did anyone else notice the switch to the Bic Stic from the Signio Premier?

Can anyone tell me what his usual pen is? Because I noticed he was using a Bic pen in this episode. Thanks! :)

His reaction at Shout Out! was priceless! Very sweet of him to give a shout out to his former employee. And it reminded me that I have yet to use the Crabtree & Evelyn’s Lavender Hand Therapy Cream my mom gave to me last Christmas. :)

I noticed the interview was pretty serious, which I thought betrayed the real Stephen’s interest in the topic at hand. So it was a really cool and pleasant surprise when that bit about God being up in heaven and lobsters being red because they’re down below was worked in. Hooray for double nerds! :)

The pen Stephen normally uses looks something like this, only maybe a bit bigger. We do occasionally see the standard Bic pen like Jon Stewart uses on TDS like we did last night, but typically they’re more like the one above. : )

The debate about his pen on other forums point to either Pilot’s Dr. Grip or Uniball’s Signo 207 Premier.

There are debates about what kind of pen he uses?! LOL! Can’t say I’m surprised about that though.

Yes, but neither of those light up, which is the most important factor! (Also, the Pilot grip is concave, so not right. The Uniball has the right shape, though.)

In any case, I think the glow pen is his “show pen” (hey that rhymes). In any non-show photo where he’s got a pen, it’s always a plain Bic stick, usually heavily chewed.

@wren: Any particular reason why Stephen chews his Bic pen a lot? I notice that Jon does that too. Thanks! :)

Well Jon’s an ex-smoker, so that’s probably related to his pen chewing.

As for Stephen? Massive oral fixation? nervous habit? bacon flavored pens? Hard to say.

Maybe Stephen’s been dipping his Bic pens in the cocaine honey? :)

Our wonderful Web host, Jen, provided pictures of the type of pen Stephen generally uses on the show: http://twitpic.com/1fzlg

Thanks Jen!

I love how the biggest topics of conversation over the last few weeks here at NFZ have been Stephen’s floppy hair and the pen he uses. LOL! I love our fandom…

How did Jen get that pen?! I couldn’t find it at the Colbert Nation store.

Oh how I covet that pen. Srsly, it’s unnatural and unreasonable how much I want that pen.

The character breaks during the Shout Outs are just priceless, especially when Stephen jumps a little bit too when they surprise him. And I love that his security guard who was deployed sent Stephen an American flag that flew on the last day of Bush’s presidency! I think it’s impossible for anything to be more appropriate.

I loved the WORD but voted for the interview because it was so interesting and because Stephen kind of dropped character and let the guy talk. You could tell he was really interested in what he had to say.

So hard to pick just one this time.

As a Texan who (likes to think she) is not terminally stupid and/or batsh*t crazy in the bad way, I cannot stand Pete Sessions and Stephen mocking him = autowin.

But then the cute character breaking and more cocaine honey-eating and shout-out to his security guard also = autowin.

But then the interview with the pinchy lobster hands and the giant tube worms and Stephen and his guest both obviously totally geeking out about their subject = massive autowin, and that is what I finally picked.

For me it was almost a tie between the “HEY” shout outs and the Ballard interview. I loved the character break during the HEY. I loved the bee thing to. That was really great. I think I had voted for Ballard last night. That was very interesting and I had heard that name before. I used to have a small short interest in that stuff.

So many good choices. I voted Ballard, because I like when Stephen wears the character a bit more loosely in interviews, and makes room for his own curiosity, as well as for the jokes. It’s got to be a difficult balance to maintain – keeping it funny while not going so far as to steamroll over any interesting information the guest has to present. Plus oceanography is just cool, as are double nerds.

But then I had voter’s remorse, because the Shout Out was super fantastic, what with the character breaks, and with the cocaine honey from my alma mater, University of Illinois!

Also, do we ever get to vote for the opening moments during the audience applause? Lately, those are some of the sweetest ones, just makes me smile, his delight is so infectious :)

I like to see Stephen’s interaction with the audience, especially during the applause at the top of the show. I also like it when he welcomes his home viewers. :-)

I’ll try to add opening moments to the poll more often. I did that when we first began RAPS but don’t think I’ve used it as a poll answer lately.

Thanks for the input! It’s good to know what people are thinking.

i voted for The Word, but the interview was very very interesting if not the most hilarious. the best line of the night may have been “that’s why lobsters are red.” it’s just funny how it showed stephen’s ignorance, allowing him to remain in character even though he really dialed down for ballard.

Did anyone notice the meta shout-out to nutmeg while Stephen described Tank’s care package from Crabtree and Evelyn? Haha!

I thought the shout-out to his former security guard was the sweetest, so I voted for that segment.
