Episode 5020 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)
By
I can’t believe it’s already Thursday night! What a great week, huh? I thought the shows were all excellent. We had a lot of interesting R.A.P.S. discussions, too!
So, Zoners, what did you think about this episode of ‘The Colbert Report?’ For me, the entire show was a win. Because I liked it all, I’m not yet sure how I will vote in the poll. What were the highlights of this episode for you? Please share your thoughts with us in the comments.
Here are some of my favorite quotes:
- What’s in the stimulus package? I’m guessing High-fructose corn syrup because that stuff is in everything.
- Good to have me with you.
- Some hideous monster ate my seal. Oh My God! That’s an elephant seal? This is worse than having the Elephant Man named after you.
- Well, I’m sure he’s got a very nice personality.
- That description was funded by the Mixed Metaphor Preservation Act.
- The end is near. Jesus, I’ll meet you at the Arby’s, where I assume we will both be working.
- You see, with federal money, they could have bought more subtle writing.
- Three leaves and shiny, keep away from the hiney.
- Nation, if these scouts keep it up, they can finally earn the coveted hypocrisy badge.
- Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. You can start by hating yourself.

It’s a weird sort of awesome to see the boy scouts get caught on something other than hating glbt & atheists.

Remember when they kept getting struck by lightning – I think it was in ‘07 and at least three separate incidents.

I had forgotten about the lightning incidents! It makes me think of “Yahweh or No Way.” I’m guessing getting struck my lightning indicates “No Way.”
I loved the joke about the hypocrisy badge. My brother was a Boy Scout for a few years and I remember how much pressure was put on him to earn as many badges as possible.
The “leaves of three” joke was pretty funny, too!

I don’t know; elephant seals have a nasty reputation for mating behavior. Frustrated adult bulls will mount seal pups, usually killing them in the process. [shudder]
Though I’m sure naming Stelephant Seal Colbert was meant in honor.

I think I saw a new opening graphic: Juice It! :)

Yea – yesterday it was “7 inch gangly wrench” (apparently in honor of Steve Martin) and today it was “Juice It!”

wow… the 7 inch gangly wrench joke… I must have listened to “Let’s Get Small” 200 times…
there’s an interesting explanation here:

Did anyone else notice that he just wore that tie the other night? I looked it up, it was January 26th.
Obviously nothing is going to come close to Wednesday’s show (I had friends emailing me the link of the Bale parody thinking I may not have seen it, ha), but it was a nice show to end the week.
I just can’t help but smile because Stephen seems so happy lately – I love it.

I loved his tie last night! I just looked up the video from 1/26, and the tie looks different. That night it was navy blue and silver/grayish stripes and last night it was navy blue and purple stripes.
Oh how I love analyzing Stephen’s ties. Haha.
I like the Stelephant Colbert bit, especially the joke about why couldn’t he be named after something pretty like George Clooney.
This was such a great week of shows!

I just looked at it again, and you are right. Oh…the mind games he plays on me. It was such a distinct design that I didn’t notice.
I also have to add that I loved the line:
“I will meet you in the stairwell. Wear loose clothes.”
Fangirl moment major.

Yeah, that was a great line.

PS… story contains lots of UBER fangirl moments… :)

My fave line of the show was about the West Wing clip defending arts funding “if you were wearing your 3d glasses you could almost touch the sanctimony” but I voted for the Lehrer interview cause the subject was so interesting.
The arts, BTW, have been proven to have a huge economic stimulus multiplier on the local level so it’s very worthwhile targeted funding to grow the economy. For every dollar spent by the arts, the local community gets around $10-$30 dollars in related spending by consumers who attend (i.e., restaurants, cabs, buses, gas, gifts etc.)

I’m voting for Stelephant Colbert.

voted for the elephant seal, because he said called it disgusting which made me laugh. it must be suited for that environment with those characteristics or else the species would be dying off, and if it was it would probably be our fault.
also, I LOVED the character’s angle on the interview. I didn’t think it was a very smooth one, the guest was a bit hesitant, but Colbert was like right out of the word truthiness.

I like the angle that Colbert used too. Truthiness.

I had to go with the seal bit for a number of reasons; one is that for some reason, Stephen’s little “hurk!” noise cracks me right up every single time he does it.
