Friday Free-for-all

Howdy ho, Zoners! I hope everyone is having a nice, restful week, and fighting those hot wing cravings more than I am. I finally gave in last night and hit Buffalo Wild Wings. I realized last night that if I’m getting wings, I need to man up and get the seriously hot ones. The “medium” wings are for sauce wusses. However, bleu cheese dressing is a must. It looks like Richard Lobb is doing a very good job of quelling the The Wing-Ageddon by making sure there really are enough hot wings for Super Bowl Sunday.
After I had my fill of wings, we went on a quest for 3-D glasses so that we could see the “Monsters Vs. Aliens” trailer in 3-D on Superbowl Sunday. We got lucky and scored some at the first place we stopped – the Tom Thumb on Mockingbird and Abrams, if you’re in Dallas and still looking for some. Have any of the rest of you found some glasses? Put your scouting info in the comments and share with the Zoners, please.
Since I’ve had some downtime the past couple of weeks, I’ve been cleaning up some of the social media view points for the site. (Check me out, being all Social Media Professional and whatnot). For the Zoners who are on Facebook, I’ve built a new Facebook fan page for No Fact Zone. I’ve got the RSS feed going into the notes of the page, so you can see what’s going on with the site that way. Another way of finding our feed is the new NoFactZone twitter feed – @NoFactZone. This is only a feed for the blog, without my chatter. I’ll still be Twittering as @dbferguson (which also includes the feed), and I’ll definitely be a Tweetfiend there, but that’s more of a personal Twitter as opposed to a site-only brand Twitter. So if you use Twitter more as an RSS reader than as a social tool, this new Twitter feed is definitely a good option for you.
So here’s my question for all of you for this week to get the conversation flowing:
What do you consider to be the weirdest ‘Colbert Report’ moments ever?
The Petit interview this week was so bizarre – I mean, seriously, even in character, how is “Stephen” supposed to respond to a guest telling him he’s from another planet? It was awkwardly delicious, and I would think pretty much one of the oddest interviews on the show ever. What are some of the more memorable sketches or interviews that come to mind for you that made you just question the sanity of all involved?
I look forward to hearing your answers! And, as always, feel free to post your non-Stephen related banter here as well, or whatever you’re in the mood to talk about with the other Zoners.

Stephen’s interview with Penn Jillette was just plain weird. Heck, Stephen’s a professional! His questions are all up in the noggin. And, “There is no , the Tooth Fairy is your and your , there is no , and no god. Sorry!”

aargh. The Penn Jillette video won’t play, it just skips right to the “Replay” screen every time. Rats.

nvm, it’s just the 2nd part of the interview now

Wow. That is the oddest interview I’ve ever seen! I felt so nervous for Stephen after Penn tossed away his cards, but I should have known better. Stephen comes from an improv tradition and it sounds like he already knew his questions. Prepared for every situation!
I think Penn felt a little bad after tossing the cards, but I still thought he was incredibly rude. I loved Stephen’s last line;)Sort or reminds me of the recent exchange between Biden and Obama when Biden was making a joke about Chief Justice Robert flubbing his lines and Obama had that “Let’s move on…you’re not that funny” face. Haha!
Thanks for sharing. I love catching up on episodes I’ve never seen before!

LOVE the Eye Candy there. That made me smile.
Can’t think of an answer to the question now…will ponder it for a while.
That’s freaking awesome that we’ve got an NFZ Facebook now. Looks like everyone is joining at the same time. I got one a week ago. *joins*

Petit was wonderfully odd! That interview was so funny!
I’ve only been watching the show regularly since October of ‘07 so I’ve missed a lot of episodes and interviews. One that I did see that still makes me crack up when I think about it was Walter Kirn. He was on the last episode before the writer’s strike, I think. He goes from talking about how people take on too many tasks and then don’t succeed at any of them to talking about wrecking his car in a rural area because he was trying to look at the nude pictures his girlfriend was sending him on his cell phone. It was hilarious!
So, anyone else out there in the midwest sick to death of being snowed/iced in? I’ve been trapped in the house with bored, restless kids since Tuesday! ARGH!

I think the coffee shower #1 threat was pretty darn bizarre. that one always sticks in my head because of how strongly I was like “what the heck?!” when I saw it.
I didn’t see it the first time around but the shred-off comes off as pretty goofy when viewed on video online.
imagining eating Bobby was pretty peculiar.
OH YEAH remember when he was getting attacked by the giant styrofoam cup?! just having someone present in the studio wearing that get-up is crazy!
I also smile back on when Stephen donned the sparkly blue outfit from Feist! that is another bit of unusual attire!
(see how all my things are so recent! I’ve probably missed so much excellent oddity!)

Hmmm, definitely FONDA, Feist’s sparkly outfit was pretty out there, the dog collar in the Starbuck’s bit comes to mind as does the tribute to Bergman.

Yeah. The dog collar in the Starbuck’s bit scared me a bit. Stephen never holds back. Hmmm….I wonder where they shot that one!

I gotta say the whole Richard Branson water-throwing indecent is definitely up there for me. It was already weird by itself because I didn’t know whether or not it was set up. But, then I read some juicy details and discovered all may not have been what it seemed. With or without the details, it was quite the bizarre moment.
And I’ve been jonesing for a hot wing too ever since the Wing-Ageddon segments started airing and I think my in-laws are making some for Sunday. Mmmm….

I’ve only started watching the show regularly this year. The last few months of 2008 was my first real introduction to TDS and TCR, and that’s when I started randomly clicking on their videos with interesting titles/tags/subjects.
I generally think that TCR is weird in itself. Good weird, of course. :) The show has an incredible power to affect change through Stephen’s interaction with and challenges to the Colbert Nation. It’s a new thing for me. I’m tremendously enjoying being witness/spectator to all of this magical madness, and I hope to take on an active role very soon. :)
If we’re going to go to specific weirdest moments, from the few videos/full episodes I’ve seen, the interviews with Jane Fonda and Philippe Petit definitely make the list.
Also, his tribute to George Bush with Christine Ebersole singing “What I Did for Love”. I think the tribute was weird in that I found it surprisingly moving, as I mentioned in the RAPS about this episode (19 January).
Finally, The DaColbert Code that predicted the winners of the 2006 Academy Awards was also both weird and fascinating for me. I wonder if he’ll use it for this year’s Oscars? I’d love to see it in action again. :)
Happy weekend, Zoners! :)

Can’t wait for the superbowl. I live in Tampa so maybe I will get to see some celebrities around!

I know there have been a few times when I’ve just thought “huh?!” but I can’t find them in my mind-database right now. ;) I second the mentions above for Petit, Fonda, Kirn, Branson, coffee shower, Feist dress, and eating Bobby. Mostly those are “good weird” but Branson to a certain extent was “huh?!” weird.
Oh! I just thought of one: gatorade breast pump!!!
Also, on a different topic altogether: I FINALLY listened to the Selected Shorts podcast with Stephen (I had been saving it for a time I could really pay attention). WOW! That was a spectacular combination of a top-notch story and flawless performance! I have listened to it 3 times in the past week! I was totally captivated.
I had read the comments on here about how he had the audience in the palm of his hand, etc., and how at one point the audience gasped. So I kindof was expecting that, but even so I was totally taken in! :) At “that moment” in the story, I literally did a full 3-seconds-long out loud gasp, followed by disbelieving pause! Then, about 30 seconds later, I thought: “hahaha! I just gasped! That was awesome! ” Even though I knew something like that was coming, I still didnt’ see it coming.
The story was a great combination of comedy and drama that was just perfect for Stephen. What a joy. He really got the most out of it.
And – great eye candy! :) What’s that from?

After looking at the National Stephen Colbert Portrait Gallery (colbertpics.com), it looks like the pic is from the after party of the movie premiere of “The Hoax.” You can see more pictures by going to the site, clicking on “Public Appearances” followed by “Movie Premieres” and then clicking on “Hoax.”

I, too, loved loved loved Stephen reading The Lie. Great story, greatest reader. What kills me every time is, “No, Jim, stop! No. Jim, stop! Jim, Jim, no, stop!” (I think that’s how it goes). BTW, my husband’s name is Jim, so it’s extra hilarious. :-)
Also, “What’s wrong with Clover? The minute I said it, I knew how stupid I sounded.”

Yeah, I have to say the Philippe Petit interview took the cake. Seriously- there are only a handful of times when Colbert is either speechless and/or breaking character. And Petit made him do both.
As for the Fonda interview- that’s in a category of its own!

I really loved the Petit interview, like everybody else said. Another weird moment that stuck out to me was that alternate-universe WORD where stephen was a long-haired pipe-smoking hippie.

I can’t think of the weirdest moment off hand, but I love how he seemed to have a need to lick things during his museum visits (remember the asteroid and the much handled ice from the 3 phases of water exhibit?)- so weird, funny, and gross all in one!

That is the second weirdest (not really funny) interview I have seen. I love Penn’s last line at the end. Exit 57. Giggles :-)

OT: Can I pick Zoner’s brains for a minute?
For those who have taken the It Getters quiz at CU, was I able to stump any of you? I still have a hard time figuring out how easy/hard to make the Q&As. If everyone gets most of all the answers correctly, then I have to make it more difficult or vice versa. :)

I got 100% as well, but I think if you made it difficult enough to stump this particular crowd, it would have to be super nitpicky trivia, which would just seem stupid to the average viewer. Better to make it fun for the rest of the fans, and stroke our egos, too! :)

Thanks, hope you had fun! Perhaps the quizzes are too easy, but then not all who use it will be uber fans like you guys. It’s a balancing act, ’tis a quandry.

Rep. Barney Frank (Mass) was an early BKAD, and he apparently wasn’t amused by the interview. I seem to recall Stephen admitting in an interview that he (Stephen) probably hadn’t fully explained the concept to Rep. Frank.

I thought it was kindof random when the writers came back after the strike, and included in the parade of writers were Mr. Met, Kevin Bacon, Baryshnikov, etc. I didn’t really get that. In retrospect, I guess he was saying something about the relative recognizability of the writers, who do so much but get so little credit … but it just came across as “huh?!”

Hi Zoners, back from vacation! I couldn’t begin to pick the weirdest episode segment of TCR. Sometimes I think the “strangest moments of Stephen Colbert” aren’t even on the show.
Though I haven’t eaten chicken wings in a decade, I’ll voice an INTENSE dislike of equivalently substituting drumlets for wings. They aren’t the same at all.

FONDA!!!!!!!!!!! I questioned her sanity… although, actually, she had a point. He is irresistible.
I agree that the COFFEE SHOWER was WAY weird/disturbing. I think I had blocked that from my memory until someone mentioned it above.
