Dan Savage and the definition of “Saddlebacking”
ByThere are times when this blog’s “family-friendly” nature can be really tough to work around. This is one of those times.
Loyal watchers of The Colbert Report will no doubt recall hearing the name Pastor Rick Warren during the presidential campaign and events leading up to the inauguration. He was an outspoken figure in the unfortunate passage of California’s Proposition 8, and he hosted a “values” debate attended by both Sen. McCain and Pres. Obama during the campaign before delivering the inaugural invocation. He also (probably unintentionally) inspired this truly classic exchange between Stephen and the always hilarious Dan Savage:
What you may not know is that Dan has been running a contest in his column, Savage Love, looking to coin the definition of “Saddleback”, and he has the winning definition posted today (big tip of the hat to attica finch). We’re sticking by our “family-friendly” guidelines here, but curious readers will be delighted to read the new definition at the bottom of the column here. Do enjoy!

Well, you know, I’d hate to speak for the man. I mean really hate to speak for him. :)

I had the same initial reaction. I don’t have a problem with any of the information in his blog. I’m just not used to people speaking so frankly about sex. It’s my Southern Baptist upbringing. :-)
Perfect definition!!!

I love this clip! Stephen blushed and covered his face with his index cards and Dan Savage just sat there, so cool and expressionless and so casual. Classic!
And I am trying very hard not to laugh out loud here at work as I am re-reading the definition of “saddlebacking”.
Incidentally, Jon Stewart also played with the word “saddleback” (“the not-at-all-gay-sounding Saddleback Church”) when he had that live show hours after the the inauguration. And he also ripped Rick Warren for pronouncing the names of Pres. Obama’s daughters like he was on “All That Jazz”: http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=216537&title=changefest-09-obamas (around 4:12-5:06).
