The Essential Twitter follows for Diehard ‘Colbert Report’/'Daily Show’ Fans

By DB on January 23rd, 2009 ·

TwitterFor those of who who have not found the addiction of Twitter, the basic concept is simple – 140 characters, describing what it is that you are doing. Sounds simple, right? Even mundane, really. But something quite odd happens when you join Twitter. At first it makes no sense, all these little tweets floating around. For a while you just read what others say and maybe talk about your breakfast or your day, and then *BAM!* You “get it”.

Twitter is an amazing tool for keeping up with friends, brands, famous people, and pretty much anything you can think of. The constant chatter in the Twitterverse is both entertaining and in some ways even comforting. I check Twitter dozens of times a day, and it helps me keep up with so many different aspects of my life, and helps me learn more about things with which I want to keep up.

For the fans of the ‘Daily Show’ and the ‘Colbert Report’, there are a few Twitter feeds that I consider to be must-follows. If you’re on Twitter, you should be watching these feeds closely, and if you’re not on Twitter, might I suggest giving it a whirl? Here are a few feeds that I consider to be essential follows for anyone in the TDS/TCR fandom.

The Colbert Report

  • StephenAtHome – This is the Twitter feed featured on the secret ‘Home’ page of ColbertNation.com, and I imagine brought to you by the same writers of that page. There’s about a tweet a day or so, mostly non sequiturs that one might expect to hear from Stephen himself.
  • ColbertEpisodes – This is a feed featuring the Hulu full videos for every night’s ‘Colbert Report’
  • mmalkoff – Mark Malkoff, the audience coordinator for the ‘Colbert Report’ tweets occasionally, and you can find his Twitter feed here.
  • ColbertTix – This feed features the release of tickets for ‘The Colbert Report’. A few Zoners (Flatpoint Grief Counselor, Tiger and myself) all watch the ticket page and publish as soon as we see tickets that are open. This is a must-follow for those who are looking for tickets for a specific date.
  • dbferguson – This is my personal twitter feed. It features an RSS feed of No Fact Zone, funny links, links to to things that are “Too Hot for NFZ” and six degrees information that’s a bit too small for a full post. I also tweet a bit about my personal life and general Twitter chatter.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

  • hodgman – This is not just a must-follow for TDS fans, but pretty much anyone who is on Twitter. Jon Hodgman is one of the most famous Celebrity Twitterers because he is so prolific (and so funny!). His popularity surged when he livetwittered last year’s Emmy awards, and he continues to be witty on a daily basis.
  • mileskahn – Miles Kahn is a segment producer on ‘The Daily Show’. And he likes to dish about what he’s working on. A *lot*. If you want some juicy insider goodness about ‘The Daily Show’, then you must follow this feed.
  • ApocalypseHow – ‘Daily Show’ writer Rob Kutner twitters about his book, his projects, and projects of some of the ‘Daily Show’ correspondents and staff.
  • The_Daily_Show – This features the Hulu feed for each night’s ‘Daily Show’.

Comedy Central

  • TheInDecider – This features an RSS feed from the Indecision 2008 blog, as well as non sequiturs from the Comedy Central blogging staff.
  • CCInsider – Another RSS feed/pithy comment Twitter feed.

Guests from ‘The Colbert Report’

  • CraigNewmark – Craig Newmark (10/18/07) twitters a lot about technology, social action, and birds. He is, in a word, adorable and must be followed.
  • LanceArmstrong Lance Armstrong (2/14/07) blogs about cycling and his LiveSTRONG work.
  • Frauenfelder – Mark Frauenfelder (3/6/2007) tweets random links, technology, and just general thoughts.
  • zittrain – Jonathan Zittrain (6/17/2008) is an infrequent twitterer, who mostly talks about his different travels.

Do you Twitter? Share your Twitter follow in the comments! And make sure to Tweet this post!

PLEASE NOTE:
Twitter users StephenColbert and StephenTColbert are NOT the real Stephen Colbert. However, seeing as how StephenColbert has over 40,000 followers, and StephenTColbert has close to 10,000 (and they are listed constantly as “celebrity” Twitterers), it is easy to see how the misconception continues to be spread.

I’m pretty new to the Twittter world, but I’m looking forward to receiving many tweets;) Thanks DB! I’m especially excited to see that Mark Malkoff has a Twitter feed since he is my favorite TCR person second only to Stephen:)

haha, I tried the retweeting thingy at the top…I probably seem very formal. anyway.

@lessig — recent guest, brought about all this remixing fun. I guess his own twittering isn’t that active but tons of people were atlessiging after he was on and that was interesting to watch.

also, if you’re reading this, just please follow @stephenfry. he has nothing to do with TDS/TCR (cept that he spells his first name correctly) but he’s a funny guy who is very nice to and aware of his followers.

finally, I would love to follow/be followed by fellow zoners. the link in my name goes to my twitter profile, so just click above!

Stephen Fry also has a great blog, at The New Adventures of Mr Stephen Fry. Some short “I’m in a hotel trying to get wi-fi working” entries, some long ruminations about art, fame, technology, etc. All witty and with wonderful use of language.

My thought on Twitter was always – “why would I need all that extra information? or want to put that much extra information out into the world?”

Then, I was watching the presidential prayer service online Wednesday morning (I work at a church) and I wanted to comment on like every thing I saw. “The celebrant’s stole is uneven!” “There’s Jim Wallis!” etc. (I am a big church geek!) And, like you said DB, suddenly I “got it.” I still don’t Twitter, but now I understand…!

thanks for the roundup

I think I only know a handful of folks on Twitter so I’m a follower, not necessarily a Twitter-er. But, I definitely added ColbertTix to my ever-growing list of RSS feeds — I’m shooting for April, but optimally, June. Thanks for the great Twitter list!

The shiny new, barely used Colbertpics Twitter is:

http://www.twitter.com/colbertpics (makes sense)

I won’t link to my personal Twitter account, but it’s the very first follower to the Colbertpics one.

Amy Sedaris news on Twitter: http://twitter.com/amysedarisrocks – Not updated often because I’m only using it to cross-reference posts on the amysedarisrocks.com news blog, along with the occasional reminder when Amy has a new TV appearance coming up that day–but still handy for folks who prefer Twitter over e-mail or the RSS feed. :)

Thanks for the links, DB. Skimming through @mileskahn and @hodgman, it appears half the TDS crew was just down the road from me (in Vermont) over the holidays, skiing and such. As a Vermonter (albeit a midwestern import), I find this entertaining: “You truly haven’t experienced a hangover unless you’ve had a Vermont hangover (really, maple shooters? Snow “hits?” Handcrafted Vicodin?)”.

Makes me want to invite them out for drinks next time they’re in state.

I’ve yet to fall in love with Twitter. I’m too long winded to stay within the realm of 140 characters. Although there is a certain poetic charm to seeking out the heart of the message, leaving out any words that are not absolutely necessary to your meaning, etc.

I understand what you’re saying. I haven’t been to my Twitter account in months. I never seem to have the time for it and I don’t have anything to say that others would care about reading. I would probably use it more if I had an iPhone or could access Twitter from the office. There are just not enough hours at night to get everything done…

I often use Twitter as a research tool, though.

I adore twitter. It’s a little like getting on a metro train and just riding around and listening to everyone, sometimes adding your own voice to the noise.

This is a great list. Finding “Global Warming” made my night.

I’m fairly new to twitter and have become addicted to it. Mostly I just read other peoples comments. As to the does Stephen Twitter note: Don’t be fooled by anyone who says they are Stephen Colbert. You never know who is really twittering.

Ah thanks for this NFZ, i’m a newbie twitterer – and this post has helped me get started! I think i’ll become obsessed soon enough. However it doesn’t seem much different from Facebook status updates….

I’m not a Twitter kind of guy so far, but I’m a complete RSS feed devotee, so stuff like the ColbertTix feed is fantastic. Is there possibly a Daily Show version out there?
