Hey, Zoners! What did y’all think of this episode of The Colbert Report? For me, the highlights were the NAACP Better Know a Lobby segment and the interview with Jon Meacham. I have Meacham’s book on my reading list, so I had been looking forward to his appearance on the show. I enjoyed the interview but I thought he could have backed off from the South Carolina insults a little.
Here are a few memorable quotes:
- Oooh, I love improv.
- Nice try, near President Obama.
- Hands off, he’s ours. Get your own historic election.
- Today, all Americans, regardless of race, have access to the same failing schools.
- Just grab somebody and give them a reach-around?
- So, you are satisfied that racism just continues and he’s done nothing about it?
- Why not have everybody just be white?
- Is there a chance that I’m black?
- You know, Bush choked on a pretzel. Where’s his book?

well at least no one else has much to say either? for some reason I am not bursting with comments like I usually am! the show wasn’t even bad.
I do remember thinking that the Africa jokes were a little much for me– not saying they weren’t OK, just apparently I didn’t like them. that usually it’s the former leaders who are slaughtered? hmmm. I didn’t like seeing that animal in distress either, to be honest.

Hilarious because I’m reading about South Carolina nullification in History of the United States by Henry William Elson, 1904 (rev. 1927). It’s quite interesting to read the educated historical opinion at the start of the 20th century. Apparently what hasn’t changed is that South Carolina is an inveterate discontented trouble-making state. ;D

Always interesting to observe the historiography of the United States. Is that the right word?
I hope Stephen doesn’t read that last comment;)

I might note that this is the phrase Jon Meacham used in response to Stephen during the interview. Haha.

Down boy. Whoo, I have to say I found this moment way more entertaining than I had any right to do. Must have been a fangirl moment :)

the NAACP interview was one of those moments where i was really hoping the interviewee is totally in on the joke. it was a crack up, but slightly cringe-worthy. and i am going to have to pick up one of meachams books, his interviews are always great, one of the few guests that manages to go toe to toe with stephen.
