One more day, people! On this eve of one of the most historic events in our lifetime, it’s still a thrill to be able to come back to our favorite pundits to learn about the events of the week. It was great to see Stephen and Frank Rich reflect on the Bush presidency, and the bit about the frogs amused me more than it probably should have.
We’d like to again congratulate Team Colbert on their 500th show, and hope to see many, many more.
Here’s some of the highlights of tonight’s show.
- The singular balloon theft drop.
- I’m so worried about Honkers and Mrs. Snowdrop. Nobody has seen them since Thursday.
- The Veteran’s Day Godzilla
- The Martin Luther King Jr. day mascot – Dreamy: “I have seen the promised land!”
- Now I know torture gets some pretty bad press. [Yet "Benjamin Button" Gets 3 Stars?]
- And you do not disagree with Jack Bauer.
- That’s how I touch politicians, by the way, with my elbows.
- Did you keep beating on [Bush] hoping that a Pulitzer will fall out?
- Frank Rich: That’s like getting the extra credit question when you’ve flunked the rest of the exam.
- I feel like someone’s waterboarding my heart.
- Since Bush took office we have not been attacked by boiled frogs.
Heeee!! Loved that “What I Did for Love” montage. That almost cloyingly sweet bit o’ Chorus Line was a perfect choice for the send-off. I must admit that I liked Stephen’s Bush send-off a tiny bit better than the one Jon did on The Daily Show, if only because I thought seeing Helen Thomas’ name on Jon’s MoZ was jarring (even though her presence on the credits wasn’t necessarily an indictment, as presence on that Roll of DisHonor was for pretty much everyone else).
Good stuff, and I was glad to see Stephen take on the torture question tonight, too, even if that is a hard topic to make comic.
Here’s to your next 500, sir! (And keep tonight’s hair — it looked good!)

I think Helen had her own, full name on that list, unlike the others who only had nicknames, because she was the only *real* reporter there.
The rest were more like Bush teammates, gophers, and stenographers.
Yay Helen.

I agree that Ms. Thomas was included on the list for a different reason than most of the others (it’s what I meant by saying that her inclusion wasn’t an indictment), but it was odd to see her name there at all, considering the others who made that credit list. It was still funny; I was just somewhat jarred by seeing her name on there.

I thought the running credits list was hilarious! I also enjoyed the “I don’t recall” montage of Alberto Gonzales.

Agreed, Ms. Interpreted! I cringed when the TDS “credits” started rolling…and I really sat up in my seat when the line about Dick Cheney having his suits made by the Filipino women locked in his basement. It reminded me of how much of an influence the US has over my country (and the rest of the world, for that matter) and how much of that influence was utilized over the last eight years. Sorry, I’m rambling…
On the other hand, I loved the TCR send-off; it was surprisingly moving.
Happy 500th episode to The Colbert Report! And here’s to the next 500!

ah, Sacrifice. the end was very real. I was trying hard to put it into character and justify it but my mind just wanted to take it at face value. if the Colbert character believes this remarkable change was OK (and courageous even) then it works. and it still sounds good just plain, as a condemnation. that was really good. got my vote.
when he introduced the guest in the middle, honestly my first thought was: did I somehow fall asleep and miss a segment?! I assumed it was my problem, not that the show could possibly have a different format! I missed any ToC there might have been trying to remember what channel CC is here, so I wasn’t prepared, I guess.

Sometimes after a show, I say to myself,
“God, I love him.”
Tonight was one of those nights – great episode.

Happy 500th Episode! I was especially happy when Stephen said, “We’ll see you for the next 500.” That’s right, you will! *balloon drop* (Even though there wasn’t one last night)
