Hey, gang! I’m reading wistfully through all your comments and wishing I had time to take in the inaugural festivities, but I’m glad some of you are getting a chance to get out there and have some fun. I, sadly, am still tied up in far too much mundane foolishness, but I wanted to take a quick moment to turn your attention to a handful of items.
- 1. Comments over in the Television Without Pity threads have indicated that Tuesday’s Daily Show and Colbert Report are, for some unknown reason, not appearing as new shows on TW’s DVR. If you’re expecting an automatic recording of your shows, you should double check and/or possibly manually reprogram your DVRs to record on Tuesday.
2. TWoP’s wonderful loudfan has gotten word that Jon Stewart will be Conan O’Brien’s guest on January 29th. Don’t miss him!
3. Great Britain’s Channel 4 News has a brief interview with John Oliver posted in which John is asked about satirizing Bush vs. Obama. It’s a tired meme, but I did get a chuckle out of John’s (and his interviewer’s) assessment of Obama’s “rightness” and inclusive, “honorable” approach toward government: irritation. “[Laughing] That is a quintessentially British response, Krishnan. You just — we Brits cannot handle sincerity or hope in any kind. It’s almost like — you know, Americans are constantly mocked for their, you know, cheering and smiling and whooping at events; it’s almost like we [Brits] find the very concept of enthusiasm laughable.”
Heh. Thanks, John, you’ve managed to make this rather jaded American feel suddenly like a bright-eyed, idealistic teen again, if only for a moment. Well done, you.
I can’t even remember the last time I saw Jon on a talk show aside from political ones.

A six dgrees addendum: Larry Wilmore, SBC for the Daily Show, spoke at the annual MLK Symposium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and I was there to see him go through his own personal history of being a comedian/writer and black individual who experienced his own triumphs and trials in the realm of diversity. In short, he told a bunch of jokes from his book (that I was able to buy AND get signed before it comes out Inauguration Day !). It was a hilarious experience, especially when one gentleman at the Q&A started crazily ranting about how Larry was a “black apologist,” i.e., one who prepackages and predigests black culture for the mainstream…Larry, who of course has probably dealt with his share of hecklers, just turned it back around on him: “You’re just repeating yourself, you’re not making any sense, you’re not even…scary…Doesn’t this University have security?” Some of the better bits of his speech included the “proofs of Black Jesus” and his Jesse Jackson impression. Loved to be there; there probably wasn’t a better person to comment on the state of our nation on MLK Day right before Obama gets sworn in.

Thanks for the story! I absolutely adore Larry Wilmore… and I can just hear his voice saying “you’re not even…scary…” lol.

That sounds awesome; thanks for sharing. Hopefully Larry will soon do some book promo events in NYC that I can get to. I’ll keep an eye peeled for his book.
And Happy New President!

Here are the book tour dates for Larry Wilmore so far. I’m going to be *very* disappointed if he doesn’t stop by the District, but it looks like you have at least the one opportunity to see him in NYC.

re: Jon – NBC usually posts the Late Night shows online, doesn’t it? (I don’t have broadcast or cable TV, so online is all I’ve got).
re: Larry – Neato on the Larry Wilmore talk. I love him – he’s sharp, insightful, and has just fabulous delivery.
re: John – I’ve got to imagine the entire TDS/TCR crew must be screamingly sick of doing these interviews built on the premise that satirical humor began with the Bush administration and clearly will die with it. What a load of hooey. But I do love to see John talk, as he’s probably my current fave TDS writer/correspondent.

THIS (as the kids say).
I hope John Oliver is serious about wanting to stay here forever, because he’s a delight to watch and seeing him stick up for America is adorable and sweet.

Just as a side note, the PBS series Make ‘Em Laugh is currently airing as well. I’ve been DVR-ing them and so far, I’ve enjoyed every second of them (and don’t forget they’re narrated by our beloved Amy Sedaris). Please do yourselves a favor and either bust out your old VCR or get on the TiVo and schedule to record it already!
If you’re not sure when it’s airing in your neck of the woods, click here and enter your zip code, local PBS carrier station, and voila! There are also lots of web extras on the show’s main website, which you can find here.
And yes, as you can tell, I’m exceptionally enthusiastic about this! It’s just so wonderful watch footage of some of the all time best comedians that ever performed.

I won’t get to see Conan and Jon and we don’t have Tivo. We’ll be on DH’s dream-birthday trip to Jamaica.
I can hear the calls of pity XD
Supposedly internet service there is spotty. If I can I’ll try to keep in touch.

God I love John Oliver. Even if the concept of Bush being somehow more inherently funny than any other politician is one that makes me want to shoot myself (after shooting whoever it is that’s suggesting that’s the case). A crying shame is that I share my (last) name with this stupid interviewer.

Since I still don’t know when I’ll have a chance to do another big round up of Six Degrees news, I’ll leave this here: John Oliver and Demetri Martin are just two of the highly cool and funny people (with David Cross! and Janeane Garofalo!) who will be participating in the “Stand-Ups Give BAC” benefit for autism on February 3rd. Details here.

And, Demetri Martin’s new Comedy Central show, Important Things with Demetri Martin premiers on Wednesday, February 11th at 10:30 PM EST. The show has it’s own website too, so definitely check it out. : )
