Episode 5007 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

By Jenny with a Y on January 15th, 2009 ·

R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)Hey, Zoners! What did you think about this episode of The Colbert Report? For me, the high point of the show was the interview with Alan Khazei. This morning, a few of my colleagues and I discussed the upcoming day of service. As a result, I thought about it a lot today. Now that it’s been highlighted on TCR, I am even more motivated to do something on Monday to give back to my community.

I really enjoyed the segment about the Obama merchandise that is being sold on TV. I especially liked the “Zenith of Change” plate. If Comedy Central were selling that plate, I would seriously consider buying it.

Here are a few notable moments from this episode:

  • Death to America: What it Means to Me
  • Barack Obama can sell crap. I mean worthless crap.
  • Yes We Can of Energy Drink
  • Presidential Obamargarine
  • A Plate You Can Believe In
  • Don’t you think it’s ironic that on Martin Luther King Day, you are asking people to work for no pay?

Please feel free to leave a comment or add a write-in vote for something not included in the poll.

Anyone else catch the subtle craft shout-out to Amy Sedaris when Stephen opened the flap to the margarine? That entire segment with P.K. Winsome was fabulous. I also love the fact that Tim Meadows, who played P.K. Winsome, appeared in an episode of Strangers with Candy. I feel like such an insider:)

LOVED the margarine bit.

I want to post the video clip of Amy on Chelsea Lately showing how she makes them, but I have a feeling the segment before it would be considered not-family-friendly (albeit, totally hilarious). So instead, I highly recommend you Zoners youtube it.

Awesome awesome show! I’m SO excited that Tim Meadows showed up! It’s been a while since we last heard from Percy Kittens. I always think of the SWC racism video when I see him.

Alright so as I was watching PK take out his Obama Land-o-Lakes package, it made me think of the old joke where you cut out the butter and put the Indian’s knees behind it. Then low and behold, there it was! I screamed with joy.

The little victories segment was hilarious. “Andromeda is NOT bigger than the Milky Way! We’re about the same size!” Love when Stevo breaks out in a smack talk series. They never disappoint.

Man, you know it’s gotta be a good show when we get an Akmadinijad joke (doncha-wish-your-girlfriend-was-hott-like-me-ijad), AND a “thank you for supporting our president.”

The Obama merchandise segment had me rolling, esp. the plate. Did you notice that the emotional background music in the pitch was the same used in the hospital strike video from the “Let my people go” episode? Too funny.

You know what cracks me up about the timing of the Obama plate thing? I *literally* saw the Montel Williams coin promo/infomercial on TV only days ago, and had a *facepalm* sort of moment. And when I saw it last night, I nearly died laughing. Seems the writers felt the same way we all did.

I find it interesting that they didn’t play up the “Change we can believe in” motto/campaign slogan from the collector coins portion of the Obama merchandise segment. Or “can’t believe in”, because the theme of the segment is the President-elect selling crap, or that the coins aren’t approved by the US Mint.

I loved the beginning–a bit out of character with the shout out to his teacher which makes it so adorable! Anyone attend the taping? Seems like the shoutout stemmed from the Q&A or something that happened before the show started!

Ha yeah I was wondering what that was in reference to, specifically.

Now if we could just get Russ Lieber…

Wow, I’ve not even seen the show yet (I’m in the UK) but I can’t believe “P.K. Winsome” is back! I honestly thought we’d seen the last of him. I can’t WAIT to see this episode now, I’m so buzzed! (And like others, I can’t help but think of Percy Kittens whenever I see him!)

And yeah, bring back Russ Lieber as well…and Tad!!

a big “hell yeah” to P.K. Winsome, and Russ Leiber, and Tad the building manager…

I hope Stephen and the writers realize this: as much as we love Stephen and his monologues and his great interviews with politicians AND with real people [yes I meant that], there is nothing to compare to a great written segment with another great comedian. Stephen plays so well with others, especially comedians as great as Meadows and David Cross and Paul Dinello.

Bring back more characters, please. It’s all part of a tasty buffet of delicious comedy.

I have never been a fan of Obama memorabilia, so I was pleased to see it called for being absurd. that section was surprisingly amusing.

I liked the call to service thing as well. I suppose am better off going to my classes than serving anyone directly tomorrow, but I’m fresh off a week of the kind of work this guy was talking about and it’s quite invigorating.
