Same Song Second Verse … or not – YouTube muting fanvids

By DB on January 14th, 2009 ·

Remember the Great YouTube Purge of 2006? (And YouTube Purge II – Electric Boogaloo)? Well, kids, we’re about to hit YouTube Purge III – This Time, It’s Personal.

According to Mashable, YouTube is “muting videos that use unauthorized copyrighted music (and that pretty much means all user-created videos.)” What this means is that if you have a fanvid that has survived the endless purging due to the Viacom lawsuit, you may lose audio and see this rather ominous message below the video:

“This video contains an audio track that has not been authorized by all copyright holders. The audio has been disabled.”

Mashable even has examples. *shiver* So if you need to back up your favorite YouTube fanvids, for God’s sake do it NOW! Until then, let’s enjoy this totally unlicensed version of “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing.”

Noooooooooooo! I’m not that tech savvy, but I’m assuming only the owners of those YouTube videos can save/backup those videos, right? At the very least, I wish I could save “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’.” Hmmm. Where there’s a will there’s a way!

You can download YouTube and DailyMotion videos pretty easily. If you install RealPlayer (whatever the newest free version is), you can set it so a little tab pops up whenever a video plays in your browser that asks if you want to save the video. (It used to work under Firefox, but that’s currently broken, so you have to use IE).
If that’s too complicated, try this site: http://keepvid.com/
You just enter the URL of a video you want and it saves it out for you.

Try those, and good luck.

Thank you so much, wren! I’ve lost the Dancin’ video a couple times now. Three times will NOT be a charm. Keepvid worked fast and easy for me. Cheers! :-)

Or, you know, you could ignore YouTube, and hit DailyMotion:

I created this fanvid group after YouTube Purge II… have a good rummage, you should find something you like :)

I went to iTunes and bought “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin” a long time back. They got my 99 cents, so I should be able to watch that video any time I want.

I’m with you. I already bought the song from iTunes, too. I only bought it because of this video. I hadn’t ever heard it before. So they’re biting off their nose to spite their face!

Youtube = idiots, way to make the vast majority of your users leave you.

Do they not understand that fans like us aren’t using these videos for any type of capital gain? It’s pure enjoyment. To be honest, I’d never heard of Scissor Sister until this fanvid, and have since done the same as Flatpoint Grief Counselor and bought the .mp3 so I could rock out to it while I’m exercising. How is this wrong? It just blows my mind that they really think they’re making some kind of difference by doing this all the time, when all they’re really doing is alienating their users.

PS–I just watched this a few times. Feel much better…

They straight up removed mine because of the music. No muting, just wham! it’s gone. I guess Linkin Park wants to make doubly sure no one might possibly be exposed to their music through SWC. *glare*

Oh nooooo!! Why must they torment us this way?! Luckily, I’ve already saved “Don’t Feel Like Dancing” because it’s my absolute FAVE fanvid. But thanks for enlightening me to the site, http://keepvid.com. That’s gonna be great!

I’m pretty sure that most of the artists whose music is being used don’t actually know about this new purge. YouTube’s just covering their butt before the Viacom lawsuit.

@bowlofpetunias – Did (could) you upload your “Easier to run” SWC vid on Daily Motion? I miss it, *sniff*
