Hey, Zoners! For some reason, I missed The Colbert Report more than usual over the weekend. It was so great to see Stephen’s shiny, happy face tonight!
For me, the highlights of this episode were the interview with Anthony Romero and the Axe Body Spray. I can’t imagine how Stephen’s studio smelled after his liberal use of that body spray! It had to have been overpowering.
Here are a few notable quotes:
- Taupe says, ‘I might not feel your pain but my evening dress does.’
- I had to begin the painful process of saying ‘hello’ to ‘goodbye.’
- And, by enemy, he [President Bush] means the Constitution of the United States.
- Meal or No Meal
- We’re agreeing but we’re disagreeing about what the agreement means.

My favorite part was when Stephen sprayed himself with Axe Body Spray at the end of the Stephen Jr. segment. The audience was tough during that segment. Barely any laughs. Poor Stephen needed some renewed confidence!

I think the audience went dead because the jokes weren’t funny. (sorry)

Ouch!

Lol! so *that’s* why he did it. I thought he was just trying to ‘fill’ some dead air. Your explanation’s funnier.

Seemed like an unusually tough crowd during The Word – or maybe they were distracted and contemplating the very little time we all have to be blessed by The Greatest President Ever… enjoy it while you can.

I thought The Word segment felt a little like an overlong commercial. I like when he does his little nods to his sponsors — Sierra Mist, Bud Light Lime, etc., but this felt like an overlong version of those little nods.
I loved the Anthony Romero interview, though — he’s a good guest.

I thought the Axe was VERY random, but hilarious. Though I do admit, I was cringing with every spray he spritzed. UGH.
But the Anthony Romero interview clinched it for me when he wryly said “If you ask a gay guy a question, he’ll answer with fashion.”
xD

I agree about the Axe. My brother wears it, and it’s a truly awful smell. If Axe commercials were true to life, all those girls would be stampeding in the other direction.

I love the expression on Stephen’s face when Anthony “dissed” his tie! :)

Hee, ditto.
I have to admit, I didn’t dig the color either. ;)

I loved that bit as well, but I actually liked the tie. Maybe not the best color, but it was a descent color…and it was a silk tie!

I didn’t like Anthony’s tie, though. I thought it was too narrow…it’s pretty hard to pull that style off. :)

I will just say that I thought Stephen’s tie was far classier than his tie. Sorry to go on and on. I just love Stephen and his ties. Has anyone seen the cute YouTube video of Stephen and his many ties called Tie Fetish?

Haha! I know, I saw that vid, too. :)

were those blue stripes? [see The Nation's Home]

I think the stripes were either a very dark blue or black…not really sure.. :s

I thought The Word was spot on, and I’m reminded of all the previous Axe Body Spray jokes over the last few years and any reference to it makes me laugh every time. This prop failure in particular was hilarious.

I enjoyed the WORD too, and the point he made was perfect via the smelly prop.

I couldn’t believe Anthony Romero said where he lived and they didn’t edit it out!

Liked The Word a lot last night…not so much with Romero. Too much yelling from the both of them. I wound up hitting the Tivo fast forward just to get through it. :-(

I can’t believe no one has mentioned the 24 hour Colbert Cam!! My other laugh out loud moment (loud enough I was worried students would hear it as they passed my closed office door) was “Those White House placemats are really hard!”.
Also I loved his expression after huffing the Axe spray. Reminds me of the whippets moment from Denver, with the half baked brownies and whipped cream.
Tie wasn’t my favorite, either. ColbertGirl27, aren’t all his ties silk? If they’re not, how can you tell the difference?

Thanks for reminding me of the 24-hour Colbert Cam. That was fabulous. Haha! It reminded me of his old TDS segment called something like “So You Think You’re Living in a Police State.”
I don’t believe he always wears silk ties which are usually shinier than regular ties.

One of my all-time favorite segments (which I suspect was filmed in his own house).
So You’re Living in a Police State.
And now I’m going to start paying attention to the sheen of the ties, not just the color & pattern, ha!

Was anyone else reminded of Stephen’s “correspondent school” segment on TDS when Jason Jones went to “pundit school” last night?

yes! i saw that and was sooo picturing when Stephen was at school.
and I also Loved the Colbert Cam. That was so great. Guest was fun! Enjoyed it a lot. I have missed this show and the site!
so much real life drama, and bad computer… new topofthelapmachine! no more trying to do everything from a crackberry! lol!
the word was good, too. i always have to laugh at Axe bits in the show, and at least Axe smells better than Tag. that stuff smells just aweful.

Oops, let me try to post this Reply in the right place:
Stephen going to Correspondent School is too wonderful not to share:

Off topic, but I was trying to edit my comment above. How do you embed a link as something other than the full url – like Lisa did above?
Never mind. Guess I figured it out :)

I think this is the first time I’ve read more than one Colbert fan agree that they didn’t like Stephen’s tie. He’s worn it before and I don’t recall any prior blah opinion. ;)
My favorite moments were Stephen’s gurgle when he said, “Don’t hide your grief” [for Bush] and the huffing Axe in a paper bag. I was genuinely concerned he might puke when he did that.
The Stephen Jr. piece might not have been that funny but he’s still a youngster, as the white feathers haven’t yet grown in. The kid is making his way in the sky, scrounging squirrels where he can find them. Good to know you’re safe, little one!

I also couldn’t believe he didn’t choke when he sniffed that Treasury bill he oh-so-liberally sprayed with Axe. Or when he sprayed himself in the face after Stephen, Jr.’s segment.

On the couch, miserable and fighting the stomach flu, so I’m rewatching Monday’s show. And on second consideration, I’ve decided that my favorite part is Stephen’s absolutely beaming smile at the opening during the audience applause. So happy :)

I hope you feel better soon!
That smile of Stephen’s cheered me up last night, too! His smile just lights up the screen.

I loved the Word, and that is kind of rare for me! I think they took just a bit too long to emphasize that confidence was what was important about the Axe study, but overall it was enjoyable. I like the subject matter, I guess.
the 24-hour Colbert cam was also a quick fun idea. my only concern is that based on the shot we had, there must also be a corresponding 24-hour Colbert camera-man. poor fellow!
