Episode 5003 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

By Jenny with a Y on January 8th, 2009 ·

Episode 5003 - R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)I realize I’ve listened to the Wigfield audiobook too many times, but I was reminded of it twice tonight: when Stephen mentioned the radioactive building near the ‘Colbert Report’ studio and when he said, “You do not want to miss the concrete pouring sequence” in reference to Benicio Del Toro’s movie. Did anyone else’s mind go there, too?

Here are a few memorable moments from this episode:

  • The return of the Table of Contents
  • “Penis in Peril” food pyramid
  • Inaugural advent calendar
  • Graphic of Stephen with no eyebrows or hair
  • Cocaine bees
  • Splash it “Down Under”

New opening credits phrase! – Colmes-free since 2009. Leave it to TCR to be self-referentially current!

What a great show. Stephen was really zinging. There was even a special bonus for us Antipodean viewers – Stephen’s Aussie cologne, “Good-on-ya”, with the slogan “Splash it Down Under”.

We Aussies are firmly of the opinion that you can never have too many Down Under jokes. We love them. I guess maybe the English feel the same way about Big Ben jokes. Which leads me to wonder, what is the great American “double entendre”?

The Washington Monument is often used in a similar way to Big Ben. Stephen even makes a joke about it in this BKaD: http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/72238/july-27-2006/better-know-a-district—district-of-columbia—eleanor-holmes-norton

Some days, the show does NOT make it easy for this blog to stay Family-Friendly. :)

I was actually very impressed with the interview. Often, actor interviews lack “meat” as it were, but I really enjoyed the discussions that Stephen had with Del Toro. I seriously want a Che Colbert shirt, too. That would be AWESOME!

Ha ha! No it doesn’t. This is one time when I found it nearly impossible to pick a favorite part. I loved the revised food pyramid, I loved Tip/Wag with the juiced up honey, and I loved the interview with Del Toro. Can’t pick a favorite there. And I’m betting those shirts will be available for purchase in the near future.

SO glad the ToC was back! The show doesn’t feel complete without it.

lol I love his advent calendars! That King Obama picture was priceless, as was the penis pyramid. I just heard the lead-up to that joke and braced my laughing muscles.

I had seen those Chinese faux restaurants on Rachel Maddow the other day. How ridiculous. (Rachel was great on TDS, by the way.)

Holy crap that Marx/Colbert shirt is fabulous! Can you imagine the initial reaction when people would get a first glimpse of that shirt? I think my grandpa would crap himself XD I thought the interview was very interesting. In fact, call me crazy, but I always enjoy reading/learning about communism and such. I disagree with Marx politically, but I think he had some interesting views of the world.

Is there really a giant telecommunication substation across the street from the Report? Sounds a bit intimidating.

Ms Maddow was indeed great on TDS. I enjoyed that interview a lot! I bet I would like her show, but like her I don’t watch cable news!

also, that building is definitely there, but there are obviously tons of big buildings in NYC. I’m sure it is not actually frying them!

haha well I certainly hope not.

Next time I feel my scalp tingle I’ll be sure to look out for one of those places.

so many things to like in that show happened so far from each other. went with tip/wag because I like when I can anticipate that segment from the intro, and also the drugged honey was funny.

the interview was interesting. it’s always good to be reminded of how hard actors work.

I love everything both Jon and Stephen did regarding Sanjay Gupta. I know him more from the TIME columns, and I have no problem with him, but I had a feeling there was a lot to make fun of there. another winner from the TCR graphics department last night!

The revised Food Pyramid was hysterical…probably my favorite thing. And did anyone else notice that Benicio was WristStrong?!?!? I was so happy when I saw the WristStrong bracelet, and immediately thought to myself, “It’s gonna be a great interview!” I was very happy to see the TOC had returned as well.

Heh yeah I noticed that. I’ve wondered if they give those to guests in their little hospitality baskets.

The Tip/Wag was very funny and I appreciated the moral outrage in the WORD but I also loved the interview as there was a lot of mutual admiration going on. And the T shirt rocked. Is it for sale yet at CC? If they’re smart it will be.

Can anyone speculate as to why benecio del toro was wearing a portland trailblazers t-shirt? I’m really curious, as i am from portland. my best theory is that he filmed “the hunted” here, which was a horrible movie.
