Episode 5001 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

Episode 5001 - R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)We did it, Zoners! We survived the long ‘Colbert Report’ break! It’s so wonderful to have our joy machine back! Not only did I miss Stephen Colbert and TCR, but I missed R.A.P.S., too. I always have a lot of fun tracking poll results and reading comments about the new episode.

Wasn’t tonight’s show great? I loved it all: Colbert and Colmes, Tek Jansen, and the John King interview. The list of approved phrases was hilarious. Brilliant insight, Stephen! HAHAH!!!

What were the highlights of the show for you? Please feel free to leave a comment or add a write-in vote for something not included in the poll.

My favorite moment? “No! No! Stay … stay …” And Boom goes the Dynamite will never get old.

And can I just give a SERIOUS shout out to Stephen’s magnificent hair tonight?! It was a little longer than usual, and so shiny, and a few times I even saw it move a little. He looked so refreshed and relaxed.

    Yay for new shows!

I think the best thing about the show (for me) was how well rested and *happy* Stephen looked about being there tonight (and I agree that the hair was lovely, DB). Stephen’s such a great performer that even when he’s not at his best, he’s brilliant; tonight, I thought he was absolutely shining.

Colmes was a surprisingly good sport, and I thought the concept of a “Colbert AND” show was hilarious, in a really wrong way. I also laughed way too hard at the Watership Down reference, because (sheepish) … I just reread that book last month. I mean, I read a lot of other books over my holidays, too (grown-up stuff, truly!), but you really can’t go too wrong with a little Hazel and Fiver and all. Anyhow, kudos to the graphics crew and whomever threw together the tweaked “theme” music, too; it’s the details that really make me love this show.

Honestly, though, I kept thinking to myself, “It’s his first night back; I want more Stephen!” Please tell me that’s not totally cheesy.

(Oh, and did anyone else think of a certain Twilight spoof when Colmes turned into a bat at the end?)

Stephen did look very well-rested and happy last night, which I was glad to see. Jon looked the same on TDS. I’m glad they had good vacations.

The show was a riot! I absolutely loved the Colmes bit. He was a really good sport and it was so funny! “No! You stay! Stay!” and then he turned into a bat at the end. ROFL! And Tek never disappoints. LOL!

Oh it’s so good to have the shows back! *sigh*

GREAT show, just goes to show that absence makes the heart grow fonder :) But I think we’ve learned that lesson for good, so no more long absences please! I have to say I kind of felt bad for Colmes; he was a good sport about it but he was pretty much just humiliated for the whole show. I know that’s the point, but still…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • ColbertGirl27 says:

I felt rather bad for Colmes as well….even if it was all in good fun. He’s was an incredibly good sport to be humiliated for the entire show!

  4. heidster says:

The first segment with Colmes was great, particularly this little exchange:
Colmes: Watermelons? Is there a reason you mention watermelons?
Stephen: Because Gallagher used to smash watermelons — what did YOU think I meant??

Agree that his hair looked great tonight. Less hairspray please, more floppy hair!

  5. TruthPower says:

Yeah I agree with all of you. Stephen looked rested and was at his best today. The Colmes part was by far the best I’ve seen. I absolutely loved the graphics and the theme music too. I was really hoping that they would have more Colbert Colmes segments later. Colmes was a really good sport.

  6. Tiger says:

woooo I loved the hair too. it was bigger and it didn’t look like it would snap off if touched. I was also thinking that rather than moving chronologically forward with the new year, he looked positively 2006, and it must have been the rest! hopefully this can persist, although not for my benefit!

oh yeah, and there was some TV show happening too? ha. Mr Colmes was excellent! I really enjoyed him sitting there on his small chair; I never would have thought there was room behind the C desk for two! how my face fell when there was no table of contents! but it was worth it for one show.

  7. Lisa says:

I absolutely could *not* stop laughing when they kept putting the graphics over Colmes’ face, and all we could see was his tie! I think I missed half of the first act because I was laughing so hard, as is par for the course with many a TCR acts. Stephen did look very happy to be back and definitely well rested. I too noticed the hair — it also looked a bit darker…or was it just me?

SOOO glad to have our boys back! Missed you guys!

  8. Flatpoint Grief Counselor says:

Great show! I love the unexpected and the TCR (yes, the The Colbert Report) folks rarely disappoint. Colmes was a great idea… I greatly enjoy watching Stephen interact with others at close range because he is so good at it.

Tek Jansen… uh. I laughed a couple of times, mostly at the “Scarce-rarium” (great joke), but overall it seemed a bit flat. It needed more sex and less of Tek eating little toasted dough-beings.

Jon and Stephen both looked youthful, rested, trim and sparkly. (how about Jon’s little hair braids?)

    • heidster says:

The bit that made me laugh hardest in Tek Jansen was “Fight noise! Sexy fight noise!”

      • Flatpoint Grief Counselor says:

ah yes, I did laugh at that one. More sexy fight noises, please…

I can’t wait to see it. I always watch the following night as I’m on the left coast. It’s just too late, so we tivo it. I’ll definitely look for the hair! :-)

  10. vigwig says:

OMG the Colmes bit was hysterical, esp. as Lisa said with the descending graphics. And Stephen did look great, what a joy to see the show again.

  11. FurElise says:

I agree with everyone about Stephen’s hair. He looked extremely relaxed and happy to be back at the show after a nice long break.

I loved the Colmes bit, especially Stephen’s expression when Colmes told him that Watership Down was a fiction book.

Overall, it was a great episode and I’m just so happy that the show is finally back.

I will not hack the poll, I will not hack the poll, I will not hack the poll….

I love Tek so much, I really do.

May I suggest that posters here consider crossposting over at the shiny new Colbert Nation messageboard? Or is that poaching?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Ms Interpreted says:

No offense, but I would rather you all didn’t crosspost too much, speaking just for myself. I’m flattered that you like the content and all enough to think of it, but I’ve always considered this a distinct site, with its own community tone and its own presentation of content, even if most of that content is secondhand.

Nothing against the shiny new CN site or the other official Comedy Central sites (love them — they often have great stuff), but I play on this site as a pure labor of love. I’m not nearly as comfortable with the idea of being useful mostly for padding the volume of other sites, and I fear that that’s how I’d feel if the content on all the forums started getting too much alike. Back when I more commonly crossposted to several sites, I found myself both enjoying everything a lot less and feeling like I was shortchanging people who might be slogging through the exact same content in multiple places; I still do crosspost on occasion, but I think I have more fun when I don’t. Maybe that’s just me …

I hear ya on that one, MsI. I’ve found that the more work I put into NFZ, the more I desire to have a truly unique voice here and don’t participate other places as much as I probably should. It’s not that I don’t like other communities, it’s that I’ve helped to foster a community here where I’m really comfortable.

We work hard to be more than a simple RSS feed for Colbert news, and I take pride in the work that we put in to find the news first, like your excellent find of the NPR broadcast or the video of Jacob at Hannukah.

I remember being backstage at TCR, and having one of the producers say to me, How in the world do you find the news, so fast?! It takes constant diligence, and while we may not be the primary source of news, we do our darnest to be the best Colbert news source out there.

Nice to hear a TCR producer recognize your great work!

        • TruthPower says:

I love all of the work that we as a nation put into this site. It is my favorite website for Colbert news. I agree with everyone. This is the place to get all of the Colbert news. It’s great when anyone from TCR recognizes great work too. And I want our site to stand out. be unique. Some cross posting is ok, but reading the same stuff can be boring. I second all of these comments. Congratulations to DB.

    • DB says:

Well, as far as the poaching issue, please keep in mind that we have worked quite hard here at No Fact Zone to build a strong, family-friendly community that has a much different feel than any other Colbert fan community on the net.

We have worked so hard to build a community that is supportive, positive, family friendly, and open to everyone who wishes to participate. And we’ve done it all as a labor of love, with our own blood, sweat, tears (and dollars). The proof is in the pudding, and even Comedy Central has expressed their appreciation for our truly organic fan experience here at NFZ.

The Zoners who post here frequently feel quite comfortable in this community, and while we support the official ColbertNation.com forums, we also want to keep out strong, active community here as well.

        eep!

Just to be clear, I wasn’t talking about crossposting the content, although I will occasionally post over there that there’s something new over here with a brief explanation and link. I was talking about the commenters.

But yes of course, this site is much more strongly moderated and family-friendly and a great place to post comments and the last thing I would want is to damage the community here. Won’t bring it up again!

I thought the show was refreshingly hilarious. It was the best Report in a pretty long time, for me.

Man, what a perfect depiction of the whole Hannity and Colmes world. Stephen was so belittling and it was absolutely awesome and surprisingly accurate. I don’t like Colmes, but I have to give him credit for what a good sport he was. He did really well. “Hamburger, you’re good!” XDD

Tek Jansen wasn’t as good as it usually is, but there were some very quotable moments. “Take me there, trusty feet!” “Fight noise! Sexy fight noise!” And YAY for Amy being Abraxia!

When Colmes turned into a bat I just died screaming, “HE’S A F**KING BAT!!”

“When Colmes turned into a bat I just died screaming, “HE’S A F**KING BAT!!””

I noticed that the when the credits rolled, Colmes was the one flying instead of the eagle. Hahaha! Classic, I love it! :)

I never realized that Amy is Abraxia. Definately AMY!!!

Love the first show of the new year! Love Stephen’s hair, love Alan Colmes being a good sport: when he was reading off the list of approved phrases, sitting “next” to Stephen and being covered by the graphics (especially the huge Tek Jansen graphic!), and being told to stay (to put it mildly, hehehe) when John King was on.

Love the banter between Alan and Stephen. There are a lot of quotable quotes in this episode. :)

And can I just say how much I love Alan’s purple tie? And earlier at TDS, David Gregory was also wearing a purple tie. :)

And yes, I agree with DB. “Boom goes the dynamite!” never gets old. :)

    • Flatpoint Grief Counselor says:

Did you notice the purple tie around the neck of Rod Blagodo-whatever-his-name-is? I think Colmes’ tie was meant to match it.
