Proving that satire works better when you don’t have to explain it, TIME has named the Entertainment Weekly cover featuring Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert (and spoofing the controversial New Yorker) to the number four spot on its list of the “Top 10 Magazine Covers” in the “Top 10 of Everything 2008″ issue. From TIME:
4. Entertainment Weekly, Oct. 3, 2008
By Arthur Hochstein
When The New Yorker ran its Barry Blitt-illustrated cover cheekily portraying Michelle and Barack Obama as fist-bumping radical terrorists, it touched off a firestorm … Amid all the hubbub came Entertainment Weekly, whose cover subjects, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart, make their livings by pointing out the pervasive folly of the political process. By spoofing the original New Yorker cover, this one actually trumps it. In addition to making the reader (me, anyway) laugh out loud, it wryly comments on the controversy. In comedy, timing is everything, and the timing, spirit and execution of this cover made it stand out, and even helped defuse the rancor unintentionally created by the original. Bravo!
Congratulations, Stephen, Jon, and Entertainment Weekly, and thank you — this has been my work computer’s wallpaper since it came out!
Right on! That was a great cover. Does anyone have any idea if I could still get a hard copy of that magazine? I was on a biz trip when it came out, and by the time I went to get it, it was the next week.

It shows up on eBay on a fairly frequent basis. I recommend an RSS feed for anything listed under “Stephen Colbert” to find which goodies are being listed each day.

Thanks, DB! I’d like to start a little “shrine” with all his magazine covers framed in my office. I have Wired and the Vanity Fair one so far.

I don’t have a shrine in my home or office (gave up on shrines after that whole wedding thing for me), but I do have the GQ, EW and Esquire magazines on my desk, laid out like reading material. So it’s a little more subtle, you see. :)

That’s not entirely true – there is this online thing I do, with the blog. That’s pretty honorary, I think.

…This is almost nostalgic because that article is the reason why I began watching The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.
Thank you, EW!

Someday I’ll get tired of saying this, but Stephen’s expression kills me dead everytime I look at this cover.

^oh, awesome! getting a new fan is a great result of a magazine cover.
I make color copies of magazine covers and hang them on my walls– this being a dorm room, I can get away with any hideous design ideas I want to! Colbert stuff is just interspersed with all my other junk though, and consequently there is no shrine going on…
but back on topic, this cover is SO appropriate and hilarious! plus, the article on the inside was extremely enjoyable as well, as I recall.
