Episode 4150 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

By Jenny with a Y on November 19th, 2008 ·

I loved this episode! “Vetting Stephen” was very funny. I liked it when Stephen asked how he could balance his dark secret and his thirst for power. Did y’all notice all of the copies of “I Am America (And So Can You!)” on the bookshelves? I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of this segment tomorrow night.

The Paul Simon interview was definitely the highlight of the show for me. I’ve always been a fan of his, and I really liked the way he responded to Stephen. Stephen was very funny in this interview. It was hysterical when he mentioned freaky three-ways and Paul needing to wash his face. My favorite line of the night was, “You couldn’t come up with anything better than ‘Lyrics’?” Hehe.

Part II: Will it go further than the Town Hall? I doubt it, but what a tease:)

I liked the interview as well – it had a really nice tone to it. Stephen was very funny and Simon responded in such a nice way that lent to the humor without trying to be funny.

And I had to laugh when he asked why he had to wash his face… I guess I never thought of that before [blush].

Part II ?! Part II tonight ?! I don’t if I can take that much hysterical lunacy. And yes I did notice all of his books lined up on the shelf. Voted for The Word and of course Paul Simon was lovely, icon to icon.

last night I literally decided I was too tired to comment so I just voted. (that’s weird!)

so anyway I chose the vetting thing because I thought the guy was being a great sport.

Oh, as much as I loved the vetting and interview, it just has to be the Paul Simon performance. One of my absolute favorite songs, beautifully performed, and appropriate to both the show and the times. Fantastic, and you could just tell Stephen was similarly blown away.

I’ve been a fan of Paul Simon since I was a teenager and I was thrilled that he was on the show. He gave a wonderful performance as well — I’m so happy TCR is having more and more musical guests on the show. It really rounds out the show nicely.

The Word tonight was very thought-provoking.

Word verification – “Praying courage”…

Vetting was hilarious and Paul Simon proved why he is an icon.

I guess I’ll go against the tide and say I’m not a big Paul Simon fan. He’s a bit too low-key for me, but I see his talent in his lyrics. “Unsociable” was a good comeback.

P.S. I miss Stephen singing with his guests, but I guess we’ll see a whole lotta mother-lovin’ singing soon:)

Of course, the whole episode was great. But for some reason, Paul Simon’s performance actually made me kind of sad. I guess it’s because I have a video of his 1975 rendering of the same song, as well as a 1980-ish duet with Garfunkel, and this time around he just sounded so… I don’t know… old? His range isn’t what it was, and I think he modified some of the melody to reflect that.
But yeah, great episode with a fantastic guest!

i really liked the paul simon performance. it’s nice that they have some lower key performers after Rush and all those heavy-hitting bands they have had as of late.

I loved ‘American Tune’ even though it was a reminder of how very old I am…it was the first 45 I ever bought. I liked this rendering of the song, the range is different from the original, altered like many artists do with their creations, but still as beautiful, and even more relevant.
