This was, hands down, my favorite part of last night’s episode. Since I’ve seen one or two other posts squee-ing about Stephen Colbert’s discussion of baseball in Northanger Abbey, I thought I’d indulge myself by reposting the segment here:
“Of course, what the bat cannot reveal is that, though he loves the ball desperately, he has sworn an oath of loyalty to the glove, to whom the ball was promised! So the bat must pretend he hates the ball, swatting at it, though he wishes nothing more than to profess his undying affection. But he can’t, he mustn’t, he shan’t! And so the bat must retreat to the gardens of his estate and … pine.”
Hahahahaha!! Inspired. Stephen staring out of a rain-drenched window and sighing for Mr. Darcy was absolutely beautiful, too. Way to give us all another memorable segment, Colbert Report geniuses!
*sigh*

The rainy window was just perfect!
It seems like there have been a lot of literary references on the show lately and I’m loving it. This segment made me so happy last night. It reminded me of the Jane Austen phase I went through in 8th grade.
“And so the bat must retreat to the gardens of his estate and … pine.” HAHAH!!!!

Oh how I loved that segment. Especially the, “But he can’t, he mustn’t, he shan’t!” and the looking longingly out of the rainy window.

Love it! Stephen Colbert and Jane Austin novels, two great tastes that taste great together.

Minor sidenote: the Comedy Central headline about the Marvel Comics presidential election reads
“Colbert Defeats Obama… Until DB Corrects the Headline.”
Is there something you should be telling us, DB? ;)
