Six Degrees: ‘Colbert Report’ writer Barry Julien is a Canadian media darling this week

Barry Julien

Apparently, all of the Canadian media is loving the heck out of Barry Julien this week. We’ve already featured one excellent interview from Barry in the past week. And we kind of barely touched on another article earlier this week (you know, election coverage and all), but we wanted to make sure that everyone catches this cool interview from the Canadian press with ‘Colbert Report’ writer Barry Julien:

Montreal writer for ‘Colbert Report’ sometimes wistful for Canadian
2 days ago

MONTREAL — Barry Julien, who skewers U.S. political figures every day writing for TV’s red-hot “The Colbert Report,” says he gets a little wistful sometimes for the antics of the Canadian government.

“Back home, the prime minister is like, ‘Hey, before I forget, you wanna have an election next week?’ and then it’s done. Everybody goes back to their lives,” says the Montreal-born Julien.

“This has been going on for two years!” he said incredulously of the U.S. campaign, which ended with voting day Tuesday. “Two years! Can you imagine?”

Julien started out as a magician when he was 16 and moved on to standup a year later. He caught the screenwriting bug while studying communications in university and did scripts for such fare as the animated “Little Lulu” and the sitcom “Big Wolf On Campus.” Before being hired by Colbert, he worked on Fox’s “Talk Show with Spike Feresten.”

Talking to Julien, it’s obvious that landing the gig with “The Colbert Report” is a dream come true.

“It is exactly as awesome as you would think it is,” he said. “It is extremely fun and challenging and gratifying and I can’t believe I get to do this job.”

Colbert, who usually makes his show look unscripted, is “as good a boss as you could ask for,” says Julien.

“He’s very, very hands on, he’s very encouraging. He’s a brilliant writer in his own right,” Julien said. “He’s just so good at what he does that you can feel really confident handing him whatever you’ve written and he’ll get the nut of the joke instantly and give it the life you want.”
