Friday Free-for-all

By DB on November 7th, 2008 ·

We interrupt this Friday Free-for-all post to bring you an Urgent Fangirl Bulletin:

ZOMG LATIN SINGING BY STEPHEN COLBERT PLUS HE WAS IN A TUX HOLY CRAP THAT WAS COOL OH AND DID EVERYONE SEE THE NEW COLBERT CHRISTMAS AD WOWEE!!!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Free-for-all post

Jon Stewart Stephen Colbert

Good evening, Zoners! I hope all of you have had an awesome week. I’m doing fantastic here, loving my job, loving Loftgasm, and loving my sweet kitties and my tarantulas. I just got me a new tarantula which should be showing up next week, an Avicularia versicolor. Tarantulas rock.

So here’s my question for all of you for tonight to get the conversation going:

What is your favorite sketch of Stephen speaking a foreign language?
(HINT: To check out all kinds of languages that Stephen speaks, check out Colbert University’s course on Foreign Languages)

Have fun, kiddos, and feel free to talk about anything you want – this is the open thread. You can talk about the election, the Christmas special, Indecision 2008, or even random stuff that has happened in your life.

stephen singing tonight was pretty sweet! best latin singing i’ve seen, and thats from 22 years of catholic church :P

and let me just say in this thread, that i’m so thankful that viacom is leaving many videos up lately, so i can still view clips of the show on youtube, because unfortunately the clips on comedy central are only available in the US :(

I’m loving this random free-for-all thread. :D Just like me!

So three things.

1. Favorite part of Stephen half-mangling a foreign language is a tie between him addressing Nicolas Sarkozy in “Bonjour Mon Frere” (he actually wasn’t bad at all… I closed my eyes when listening and I understood everything he said), and him bashing Bi (yet again) via parody of a Korean music video. With the mv however, I must say I didn’t understand a word he was saying… even with the subtitles (save for kimchi… and Hyundai).

In case it wasn’t made clear, I’m Korean. xD But then my language skills are less than exceptional…

2. Dear Santa, I would really like Stephen Colbert’s Christmas DVD to stuff my stocking. If you know what I mean. And what I mean is, I would like to have it, please. Sincerely, Charlene

3. I look forward to the next Jon+Stephen pairing in the future. They’re like two really satirically-flavored PB&J mushed between cable bread.

I had too much fun with this post, and I apologize. >___<

I enjoyed reading it! Who’s the peanut butter and who’s the jelly?

Haha, thank you for enjoying my ramblings! ^__^

I’d say Jon is the jelly, ’cause he can be sweet and agreeable with many types of bread, while Stephen is the peanut butter that can either be smooth or chunky… and sticks to the roof of your mouth no matter how many times you try to de-stick it.

Jif or Skippy…or Peter Pan?!

Screw those name brands.

Stephen would get Prescott to manufacture his own brand of PB called “Stephen Colbert’s Extra Buttery Extra Peanutty Peanut Butter.” xD

storm_03 – actually, we in Europe can still watch the clips on CC. But I do feel bad for Canada and the UK

Back to the question – my favorite is from the daily show, following an election in France, where they did an spoof of French neo-realism. Stephen speaking French, smoking a cigarette at a cafe table, Mo Rocca appearing at the table next to him, red balloons… absolute classic.

But I can’t find it on the TDS website. If anyone can help me locate it I’d be forever in your debt.

I’ve got a request in for that one from one of my CC blogging buddies. So hopefully we’ll get access to it soon.

That picture is so cute! And Stephen singing Happy Birthday to his mom in Latin was also incredibly adorable.

I loved both guests so much tonight. Paul Rudd’s amazing dancing and Rachel Maddow’s all around amazingness.

All sketches including Esteban Colberto are my favorite. He does the accent do well. I’m rather jealous, as I have difficulty doing the accent and I sound so bland while speaking Spanish.

And the Christmas Special commercial was so awesome! ahhh I am so freakin’ excited for that. Has anyone else heard Christmas music on the radio yet? There are two stations around here that are already playing it. It seems a bit early, with it being before Thanksgiving and all, but I must admit that I did stop and listen to a few of the songs today.

my favorite was when he had on Lorraine Bracco and he started speaking French with her for a second and it was pretty neat. I liked it in general because she’s a very outgoing person, it seems, and then she plays this, like, courageously meek person on The Sopranos. (PS. that show is an amazing thing…I loved it a lot…although I didn’t start watching until it had finished; gotta love DVD waiting lists at the library.)

I love hearing people speak French in general so tonight was pretty awesome as well!

also Christmas Special! the more ads, the better, they are so excellent (although they make me hesitant to do things during commericals!) I hope they put up a kind of compendium of them at some point.

I’ve seen the one in this post with a gettysimage watermark, so probably from there or a similar photo site.

Ooh, another excuse to plug a Colbert University course — LING 301: Foreign Languages!

If we’re missing one you love, and you can find it for us, we’d be happy to hear from you! Alas, we could not find Stephen’s sultry French cafe sketch from TDS that Jennie mentions — that’s one of my favorites too!

If you’re including out-of-character moments, you could add Quenya (High Elvish) to the list. :D Spoken on Late Night with Conan O’Brien:

That’s one of my most favorite interviews of all time because of his incredible nerdiness. It makes me feel better about being such a nerd. Lol.

it’s that a lovely interview! I haven’t watched it in a while and it’s always great to see it again.

it makes me WANT to be a nerd, which is something I’ve always wished I could be long before I’d heard of Stephen Colbert! I’ve got the awkward aspects of being a nerd down quite well, but I don’t have the benefit of specialized knowledge about science fiction, fantasy, computers, etc. because I am just not an it-getter with those things– they sail way over my head.

Anyone else surprised that both shows are returning next week….after the election special?! It looks like TCR will be off Monday, but I’m still astounded. I figured they would be on the verge of collapsing.

OK, we need to investigate recaptcha. This is getting a little weird;)

It’s a bit insignificant for the main blog, but in the Tooting my Own Horn Category:

For NFZ stats, not only did we reach the 1.5 million unique visitors mark this week, but we also reached 1000 RSS subscribers, which is a HUGE milestone for us! We’re also currently averaging over 5,000 page views per day.

Yay Zoners!

Wow! That’s great DB! Of course, I’m not that surprised considering the quality of this site;)

That’s not insignificant, that’s major expansion, in my opinion. Wasn’t it only a couple of months ago that unique visitors had reached 1 million?

When he spoke Russian–loosely rendered, tovarichsh, means “comrade.”

Does Hiphopsketball: A Rejazzebration Remix count? He spoke the language of music.

I can’t get enough of Esteban Colberto! That insanely bright suit, the “chickas”, Stephen’s silly little hip dance he does with them? Priceless!

Other than the election, my week has been utterly depressing. So I’d much rather wish Mom Colbert a very happy birthday!

Esteban Colberto and his French-speaking character on TDS in black-and-white.

As far as off-the-air moments: When I went to a taping, a girl asked him why he never spoke Japanese. He responded at length in Japanese. Priceless.

Haha in Japanese? I wonder how much information on other languages he has stored up just for moments like that. I’m convinced he knows everything ever and just isn’t telling anyone.

He knows everything there is to know. He just doesn’t want to tell us and keep the nation stupid.

SC is the best! He has charm, looks, nerdiness, and can speak many languages.

Hey, Harvey Birdman is on right now on Comedy Central!

I love Harvey Birdman! Phil Ken Sebben is one of my favorite cartoon characters ever. :)

He really is the best.

Either that or he has a twin brother.

That would explain how he does so much all the time, but I’m not sure the world could handle two men with so much knowledge, talent, handsome and all around amazingness. Lol.

15

That picture is definitely smile-worthy :D

My favorite foriegn languge sketches are anything with Estaban Colberto. I’m a spanish speaker so listening to him in those really tickles my fancy.

Oh, and Singing in Korean deserves special mention. For obvious reasons.

i loved the Whose Line bit he did way back and they did a scene where they were speaking in German while another player translated. Hilarious.. look it up on youtube

and of course on the Report, Singin’ in Korean. He wasn’t that bad with the pronunciation, but when he did a follow up segment on the show about Kim Jong Il, he read some Korean off the teleprompter (something like “Please don’t kill me”) and he TOTALLY butchered it. It was really funny anyway, hehe :)

I love it when Stephen butchers German, the language seems to lend itself easily to comedy. But the Nazi slogan was crystal clear.
