Hey, Zoners! What did you think of the show? For me, the highlight of this episode was the segment about Paul Krugman’s Nobel Prize and the way Stephen connected it to Bill O’Reilly. Have any of you been to Wikipedia to see if Papa Bear’s page was edited as a result of this segment?
I liked the “Death by Chocolate by Association” ice cream flavor. The mention of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream always makes me want AmeriCone Dream. I sure wish I had some in the house right now!
Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. You may also wish to add a write-in vote for something not included in the poll.
nothing really stood out tonight for me.
in fact I just voted and I forgot which segment I voted for.
this might just mean I need some rest, lol.

reading the revision history… it looks like they changed the level of protection on the article almost right after he mentioned it on air… if i understand it right…

You’re right. I just went to Papa Bear’s Wikipedia page and read the history and discussion tabs. It looks like the level of protection was changed right after Stephen mentioned Bill O’Reilly on the show.

It certainly blows a hole in the theory of Wkikality doesn’t it?
I guess it’s not as easy to get a consensus there as some think since every attempt is blocked.
I noticed on that page under discussion that people were saying
“Preemptive censorship a little? I understand that it’s just you doing your jobs (well), but I kinda feel like that’s not the spirit of wiki.
What about our rights as vandals? No donations without representation!
Vandals don’t get rights”
So I suppose the point is that what can be vandalized to try to impose Wikiality, can be updated to correct it right?

was it me, or did it seem like a really tough crowd tonight? even stephen seemed a little out of it. i felt tonight’s show wasn’t as strong.
or something’s wrong with my TV. thoughts?

I think it was the audience. There were quite a few jokes that I laughed at that they didn’t. They didn’t seem to laugh at hardly anything though.

I would have to agree on that. Admittedly, I was tired myself, but Stephen always pulls through with the funny!
Plus, did anyone notice how he did nothing special at the end of his show?

It sounded to me like something might have been wrong with the audio. It sounded fine until Stephen got to the TOC, then it seemed a little drowned out for some reason. Maybe my TV’s just wonky…
@ Jenny with a Y: I had this feeling you were totally going to pick that quote for the poll. Best line of the night!

I also thought it was the audience. I actually pointed out to a couple of people that I thought that audience was going to become Exhibit A for “how not to be an audience member” in Mark’s next few pep talks.

It was definitely an off night. Lot of weak jokes. And I was surprised that the mention of Krugman getting a Nobel didn’t get a single cheer.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who felt this way about last night’s show…it was a really weak audience, but it did seem like Stephen was tired. Maybe they’re working extra hard on the election special.

He certainly had a really tough audience last night. It was too bad too, because I was really excited about Joseph Stiglitz (I am such an economics Nobel Prize groupie). Although I give Stephen and his writers a lot of credit – it is very difficult to make economist and economy jokes right now.

Yeah I can understand why. There are alot of people who would jump on that and totally edit his page. We tend to do that.

I was interested to read your comments about last night’s audience. I was there – it was my first taping – so perhaps those of you who’ve attended before can comment…
Before the show several members of the crew and the warm-up comedian emphasized that Monday’s audience hardly laughed at all (I hope no one who attended Monday’s show reads this). So the “rehearsed” us several times on laughing and applauding and emphasized that Stephen gets his energy from the crowd so the more enthusiastic we are the better he is. Of course, having been in the middle of it, I can’t be impartial.
On a persoanal note, the comedian asked an audience member “what are we supposed to do tonight?” – but he said nothing. Then he asked me and I said “laugh”. He said – that’s right! Why don’t you go up and touch Stephen’s desk – quickly! So I ran up, I heard a few women scream but it’s kind of a blur, and touched his desk – it’s a glass panel raised about an inch over wood – and ran back.
They’d told us that Stephen sometimes throws Wriststrong bracelets to the audience – and he did – one right at my body (I’d like to think it was on purpose).
THEN, at the end of the show (and I’m wondering if he does this every time), he walked along the front row and up and down the aisles and shook EVERYONE’s hand who was sitting at those spots.
So, based on those things, it makes me think that HE was pleased with the us, but, like I said, it’s hard for me to judge.
Even if we weren’t in prime form I had a GREAT time!

oh, excellent! it sounds like that was a great time indeed! :D
I didn’t particularly have a problem with the audience. I thought some of Stephen’s interview questions were not timed well, and other parts of the show were boring. but I’m still looking forward to tonight, of course!

Thanks for posting this. I was in the “the audience sounds DEAD tonight!” category, but it’s always good to get the insider’s perspective. And it’s doubly good to hear that you had such a good time — he really is a superb performer, isn’t he?

He IS a superb performer.
I didn’t post my comment to say that you folks who thought it wasn’t a good audience were “wrong”, it was just that since the TCR staff made SUCH a big deal about us laughing a lot I thought we would’ve done ok.
One thing that was hard for me, and if anyone’s gone to a taping I’d be curious if it was hard for you, is that all of the graphics are on TV screens above our heads. They AREN’T next to Stephen in the way you see it on TV. That took a while to get used to. I wasn’t always looking at the monitor when graphics first appeared there and so I didn’t laugh cause I missed it. I mean, it’s fun to just watch Stephen. Of course, that’s not an excuse for an audience to be “off” since every audience has the same situation. But maybe some audiences have more “repeaters” than others.
It’s funny, when I watch a show I judge it on how much of it *I* thought was funny – not on what the audience was like. I found myself paying a lot more attention to that tonight.
Thx for your comments.

Sorry for taking this almost completely off topic, but don’t we have an anniversary coming up at the end of the week?
Do I feel the tingle of a portrait-unveiling coming up?
ReCaptcha: end sincerely. Wouldn’t have it any other way!

I voted for the Word. That was excellent! Tip/Wag was funny too. The interview was ok. Not the usual pushing from Stephen, but the last line was funny. I think it was just a bit of an off night which they’re bound to have once in awhile.

You have to admit, though, that was one of the more poignant endings to “the W0rd” yet. Prisoner of W. indeed.

I thought last night was a little bit of an off night, too. There were times when I laughed and the audience didn’t, and there were times when they laughed and I was like “um, no, doesn’t work for me.” Although in Stephen’s defense, it’s pretty hard to be funny right now when you’re talking about the economy.
But I gotta say, that line about shipping bulls**t to Washington was golden. Easily the best line of the night.
