So I’m dragging a bit this morning. I got back to my computer after watching ‘The Colbert Report’ last night, and had a couple of IM’s from friends. Apparently the site was down. I called my wonderful host, Jen from Draknet and found out that our servers were being hit with a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack). Unfortunately, not much could be done, but I still stayed up too late talking to Jen and Jacob anyway. So I’m seriously dragging. It looks like it’s all been resolved now, and the site is good to go.
I’d like to take this time let you guys know that we’ve got two new contributors to the site, Cole and Porter. (Cole Porter … HA!) These young men are going to be helping the site get caught up with the Episode Guides that we’ve been slacking on since Jenny with a Y started her wonderful R.A.P.S. (Awesome!) feature. Once we get all caught up on past Episode Guides, they’ll both be in rotation to help us with the guides on a weekly basis, so that we can get back in the habit of getting those done every night immediately after the show. If any of you have wanted to contribute to the site but weren’t sure how, we could really use a helping hand with the Guides. If you think you have time to contribute to the site once a week, for about two hours, click on the Contact link in the navbar and send me an e-mail. It would be nice to have a handful of people in the Episode Guide rotation instead of just three of us.
So here’s my question to all of you this week:
If you’ve been to a ‘Colbert Report’ taping, or a live event, what was the highlight of that event for you? What was the one moment that made the whole event worth your time?
I love hearing Taping Reports from the previous week in the comments. It just makes my whole week to hear the wonderful stories. So I decided I wanted to hear lots and lots of stories today. And, as always, this is an open forum thread, so you can post about anything you’d like.
OMG. Bears are certainly wreaking havoc aren’t they? They really should’ve been the #1 threat the other day. Welcome Cole and Porter to NFZ! It’s funny…I actually knew someone in high school with that exact name (no lie!).
If I ever get to a taping (*groan*) you guys will be the first to know everything about my experience…promise.
LOVE the eye candy too!

I will go for the split second interpretation of the word “moment” just for variety in story-telling:
when we were singing NMH we were interrupted and I assumed we were done. I was processing the experience by looking in the direction of the microwave. then I got a nudge and Stephen was looking at me again and singing and I jumped right back in with the lyrics. I was thrilled that he wanted to finish the song AND took the time to look back over to me in order to do it.

Here’s an awesome Stephen moment from my taping report on 7/19/07. You can read the rest at http://www.colboard.com/viewtopic.php?t=17189&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60
….At this point, my lips were so dry I desperately needed some chapstick but my purse was under my chair and I didn’t want to bend over to try and get to it because I was wearing a tank top and didn’t want to give the whole gratuitous decolletage shot. So I asked my cousin if she had any. She said all she had was lip gloss and then she put some on and handed it to me and then she grabbed a different one and said “oooo, you should try this one instead it’s super cute”. I was trying to be subtle and quick about it but now suddenly it felt like we were 2 girls at the MAC counter at Bloomie’s. And then I thought Oh my God what if Stephen’s noticing this? And I glance up and sure enough there he is laughing and miming me putting on lipgloss and then he picks up a page of the script and does the lip-pressing thing on it. So I’m laughing and turning red while trying to finish putting it on and he’s just looking at me and grinning… that big, sweet, heart-melting Colbert grin of his. It was so adorable.

I’ve been to two tapings and the Christmas screening and what stood out for me, aside from his impressive presence in general, was his joyous glee and high energy. He truly loves his audience and what he does. It was also wonderful to be on the receiving end of a paper airplane script that Stephen threw directly at me which now adorns my wall. But the most memorable (and will be till I DIE) event was his book signing at the 92nd st. Y where he sang my own parody lyrics (about his presidential campaign) back to me and laughed and said “nicely done!”
Here’s what I gave him.
[Tune: Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Modern Major General”]
Colbert’s the very model of a presidential candidate
Colbert’s the very model of a presidential candidate
He’ll run in Carolina (South) despite having no mandate
Then mock the other candidates with quips and jests satirical
If he wins in this contest it would be a freakin’ miracle!
He’ll bring to our attention all what’s bogus and political
And point out anybody who he feels is hypocritical
From Guiliani, Paul and Mitt to Obama and Hillary
They’d better duck or soon they’ll find
Their platforms have been pilloried!
In short given the pandering to voters that he’s sure to make
He’ll be the very model of a presidential candidate
He’s got a Colbert Nation PAC that he’s sure to rely upon
He’s marketing a book that’s reaching number one on Amazon
His “favorite son” announcement sped it way around the internet
The news sites then erupted with discussion and more blogging yet
Chorus: – In short given the pandering to voters that he’s sure to make
He’ll be the very model of a presidential candidate
If he can shred guitar licks while stalking mythic paramours
Ignore restraining orders while he sings just like the troubadours
Then he can run for office like a beer consuming “Average Joe”
And pay for his campaign munching Doritos on his TV show
Chorus: – And pay for his campaign munching Doritos on his TV, TV, TV Show –
We know he rules pop culture from the blogs to the old media
His legions have crashed websites as obtuse as Wikipedia
Now he’ll use his improv skills to brighten this election
A ballsy move that is well timed to heighten fan affection
He’s better coiffed than Edwards and talks right past Guiliani
When he is done with Kucinich he’ll call out for his mommy
He’ll bloviate, backtrack then run a campaign that is cleaner
And take on maverick McCain’s pale, pasty-like demeanor
So God help Candidate Colbert and all the folks behind him
One delegate to yell his name is all we ask to find him
And while there is no polling for this independent hero
His chances of election seem a little less than zero
Chorus: In short given the BS that his writers will be sure to make
He’ll be the very model of a presidential candidate

I didn’t know the song, so I looked it up and then sang the song to your lyrics. Brilliant! How sweet that he took the time to sing it back to you! Wow.
Haha. I love how you have it copyrighted at the end there…and justifiably so!

Thanks Colbertgirl27. I performed in Pirates of Penzance years ago so I knew the song pretty well. And Stephen didn’t sing the whole song, just the opening stanzas but it was enough to send me over the moon.

just wondering… has anyone explored “The Nation’s Home” at colbertnation.com? It’s thoroughly bizarre.
I’m now working on a atonement video for the 1-800-oops-jew campaign… anyone else?

I believe you have to be signed up for the Colbert Nation community, and then you can get in — but you have to input a “secret” (i.e. different) screen name. (now that I’m in, I kinda forgot how I got there)

I was already signed up for Colbert Nation and I used a different screen name, but I still couldn’t get in. I still can’t view the videos on the site either. I guess I’m still not a citizen of the Colbert Nation:(

One day I’ll go to a taping, OH YEAH!
I do feel bad about not sharing anything, though, so if anyone’s interested in a little vid, be my guest :)

Hey that reminds me of a dream I had last night where I got to hug him in an art gallery. I can’t remember the specifics of the dream. They can get fuzzy pretty quiclky if I don’t write them down. What I remember the most is that we hugged once spontaneously while being excited about the opening of the art museum that we had helped design near some college. He was head of the design team when not busy doing the Report. I was his assistant. The equivalent of being an intern on the show. I was happy when I we hugged . I wanted another one and just kinda held me arms out. A sign. I got it!!! Man, hugging Stephen is like hugging a piece of candy!!! I can’t sleep so that is why I am posting this at 3:24 am Eastern Time. Wonderful dream!!! I hope I repeat that one when I fall asleep.
I’ll be eating Americone Dream tomorrow. I kinda flipped out when I saw that and was running on pure joy for the rest of the night. Celebrating the fact that the grocery store where I work now sells it!!! It’s great Colbert time!!!

Sorry, but I’m going to keep that on the down-low. I’m a friend of “a friend of the show” (that’s how I got backstage to meet SC) and I don’t want to mess up my chance for repeat performance. After all, I need to redeem myself b/c I acted like a slack-jawed Marcia Brady meeting Davy Jones.

First off, welcome Cole and Porter! Thank you in advance for your contributions to the site!
Second, I LOVE that eye candy. For me, that weatherizing segment trumped the town hall….though it was close to being a tie.
Without a doubt, this is what made the night for me during my first TCR taping:
Q: During the Philadelphia primary, you began singing “L-O-V-E” to Michelle Obama, but you were rudely interrupted and I wondered if you could finish the song for us tonight.
A: “L…is for the way you look tonight…” Stephen sang the entire song and looked straight into my eyes for the first few bars (I think was too shy too look at him after a few bars) before surprising the woman in front of me by suddenly putting his face right in front of hers. This must have been really something for her as she was the one person in the audience who had never even seen the show before! He then ended the song by bending backwards with arms outstretched and microphone in hand. Everyone clapped. Stephen Colbert sang a love song to me. I heard Stephen sing in person. Words cannot express….
I still think of this moment every day. When I shared this story with my friend, she said “Oh man, you’ve been spoiled now. When you’re out on a date, you’ll have to say ‘Stephen Colbert sang to me. Top that.” Ha! Sadly, there’s so much truth in that. There’s no going back now.

do you try to explain this to people? I rarely talk about my experience to people. when I go out on a limb and try, I come out sounding like a spaz (in the American English sense of the word) and I get responses like: [silence]…that must have been very exciting for you. [person changes subject]

That would have killed me right there.

I know what you mean. Well, I’ve at least tried to get my friends back home to understand his brilliance by tying it into their interests. For example, one of my friends loves trashy romance novels so I sent her the clip of Colbert doing all of his romance novel poses with
his “intern.” She loved it.
I’ve managed to find one it-getter at work and one at church, but I’m not sure I’ve found actual fangirls.
However, if people really don’t know much about him, there’s really no point in sharing the story. It’s like talking to a brick wall. However, I sort of love how we have our own little niche world that only some understand:) At the same time, it’s really hard to suppress your love for Stephen even if people will find you crazy. I think Stephen is a healthy addiction, but of course this is coming from an addict preaching to the choir.

The statements you make are so true. I’ve learned to tone down the number of Stephen references and quotes I mention to my friends lest they think I need to be committed. But it is so lovely to have a community that understands my fixation. I can feed my addiction with all of you and not worry about the “brick wall” responses I get elsewhere.
Sadly I moved away from the east coast just before TCR began, so I have not yet been to a taping. I do hope to go someday, but I really enjoy living vicariously through everyone’s stories.

I will preach to the choir every time I have a chance. I can do that a lot in the store where I work now. I will be able to meet the it getters around where I work. I’ll catch them for a second as I’m bagging their Americone Dream ice cream. I have a feeling that they will start coming out of the wood work now.

I work with a bunch of extremely conservative guys, and none of them know anything about Stephen or Jon.
Yeah.
So it’s hard to describe areas of my life to them. “So, um, I have this website. It’s pretty cool.” They have no friggin’ idea. At least my friends appreciate the effort that I put into the site, even if they don’t really read the site itself. That’s why I love this community. I can talk about things that none of my IRL people want to talk about.
Like, say, Stephen dropping trou on Monday’s show. :)

My TCR taping experience came the day after my TDS taping experience(Jon spun my dreidel on his desk TWICE during the show and improvised some great jokes for me, which was, arguably, the greatest moment of my young life), so Stephen had a lot to live up to. So when I asked Stephen if he could do me a favor and I reached into my jacket pocket, he said he thought I had a gun, but then I fished out my patriotic D20, asked him to roll it on his desk, he did it TWICE but not on camera. Still, he kept it in his pocket the entire show and then gave it back to me at the end. It was as if Jon and Stephen were tag-teaming it that day to make sure I had special souvenirs from them, and it was awesome to the nth degree ;)

I went to the taping where Stephen broke his wrist, and yeah, it was amazing. (That always sounds mean, as if I’m happy he broke his wrist lol). But it was so cool because I was right in the front row when he laid down, and I totally touched his shoe. Haha. And it was just cool and funny how many little inside jokes he had with the audience.
Also, I watched Wife Swap tonight, and there was a part where these two girls had to act “lady-like” and balance books on their heads. Well one of the books a girl had on her head was definitely “I Am America (And So Can You!)” I noticed it right away and pointed it out to my mom, even though she didn’t care. lol.

help please! I feel stupid, but does anyone know how to search videos at colbertnation.com by date? I also can’t search by Episode number.
(they don’t have the very-cool video timeline that TDS site has, which I think sucks)
Shout Out (Hey!):

You should be able to search by date, by typing “August 8, 2008″ in the search box. I find videos like that all the time. If you can find one video from the episode, you should be able to click on it, and all of the videos from that show will show up on the right of the screen.
It is my understanding that with Colbert Nation, they decided to put the search focus on topics and tags rather than date. They poured their effort into making sure everything on the site had a ton of tags on it. So, while there is not a date, it is much easier to find things by content on CN.com.
And, truth be told, for the way that the show is structured, that was an excellent strategy. I like being able to click on the Formidable Opponent tag, for example, and find every instance of that sketch. You can’t do that on the TDS site.
