Episode 4125 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

What did you think of tonight’s episode? I loved it when Stephen compared John McCain and Barack Obama to Shakespearean figures. My favorite moment from the McCain vs. Obama segment was when Stephen said, “Don’t f**k with me, man.” That remark had me in stitches.

It was good to see Tom Purcell on the show. I hope we are treated to more appearances from TCR writers in future episodes.

Oh goodness. I really enjoyed the entire show, but the theatre kid/Shakespeare nerd in me had to go with the Stephen Greenblatt bit. And that picture from when he was in college! Lol. He didn’t look half bad. :) (Not that he ever looks half bad.)

And the video on the side bar is so apt!

yeah, I watched that sidebar video today and thought “we need more shakespeare on TCR” and they delivered immediately. what else should I start demanding?? lol. I voted for Formidable Opponent cuz I thought it was solid, especially with the extended metaphor. also Dr Pepper appearances warm my caffeinated heart.

Dr. Pepper is the nectar of the gods. Lol. There was a time in my life that I ran on nothing but napping during Calculus class and constant Dr. Pepper intake. Ahh… theatre. Good times, even if it sometimes saps the life out of you. Wouldn’t trade it for anything though.

Of all the soft drinks I’ve consumed, Dr. Pepper is definitely the best. When I was younger I used to drink it all the time but now I don’t drink much soda at all. Dr. Pepper is kind of sweet but the spiciness tones it down, and it tastes great over ice.

2:30 in the morning and now I want a Dr. Pepper (as I finish my cup of green tea). ;-/

last night I went down in my robe to a vending machine but it didn’t have Dr Pepper. checked again this morning at my other vending machine places. I will get my Dr Pepper revenge this lunchtime!!

Indeed, Dr. Pepper is the nectar of the gods. It’s my favorite soda. Well, okay, it’s in a tie with Big Red.

I would definitely have to say that Formidable Opponent is my favorite segment on The Colbert Report. Tonight’s was great! The sexual metaphor was absolutely hysterical the way he just kept going on and on.

this episode makes me feel bad for slacking off on all my shakespeare readings in high school

I loved the Shakespeare part especially the “Don’t f*#k with me man” but I would’ve compared Bush to Julius Caesar instead because
“The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.” …Julius Caesar Act III Scene II

I found the she-mistakenly-called-people-from-Pakistan-alpacas bit unreasonably hilarious. I’m not even sure why.

  7. DrMeowMix says:

I love the Bard, but he couldn’t win out over “supercalifragilisticexpializillion” and that ridiculously involved sex metaphor. (Even though he was a formidable opponent? Eh?)

Naomi Klein’s comment about “oh no, those are gonna be prison jobs” caught me as off guard as it seemed to catch the audience. Anyone know anything about that?

  8. Greenblat was awesome but I voted for Stephen talking to himself. I love the college pic of the younger bearded hero. *sigh* What I like about Opponent is the style he uses which isn’t all that easy. Each one of those segments is similar yet topical. Voice inflection while talking to no one. Does the audience see those being taped? Maybe not.

    gotta go

Loved Shakespeare but Formidable Opponent was awesome! What a hilarious and concise summary of the complicated financial mess we’re in!

Stephen has been so hot on the interviews this week – and the Shakespeare one was too fun… but… still had to go with Formidable Opponent. They haven’t had enough of these and they really show off the writing team’s talent and Stephen’s performance talent and this one was just beautiful.

  11. TruthPower says:

Yeah, Stephen was really on fire with these interviews and segments. I love the Naomi Klein interview! Stephen really on a roll nailing her. The nail count was high. And I’d love to see how they shoot Formidable Opponent. I know they must use a green screen somehow. I’d love to see that. Okay, enough babbling. I’m out to get the Entertainment Weekly magazine. IT”S OUT!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!

LOVED the metaphore in formidable opponent. i was almost going to vote for Shakespeare because i <3 theatre, and the “don’t f#@k with me, man” which apparently was also Shakespeare…hehe, but couldn’t get over all of the innuendo and the constant Dr. Pepper references. oh, what fun. I kind of tuned out whatsherface because i was packing…guess i’ll just have to watch it again!

  13. Liz says:

I can echo most of the above! Wound up voting for the Shakespearean segment just cuz it sounded like almost everyone else went with Formidable Opponent. The “Don’t f*ck with men, man” had me rolling, too.
Can I take mine back and do a write-in vote?
I nominate that photo from Stephen’s Shakespeare play! :-)

For me, it was a tie between “Don’t f#@k with me man!” and Formidable Opponent. I always find it sexy when Stephen surprises his interviewees with his knowledge of their expertise. I’m sure Stephen could be the Kenneth Branagh of television if he wanted pursue that path:) Wouldn’t it be great if he had a Shakepearean actor on once a month and performed a scene from one of Shakespeare’s plays? In the past, I never really enjoyed Formidable Opponent, but I’ve come to really love and appreciate this segment because it tackles especially complex subjects and breaks them down into a simple, clever, entertaining format that gets to the heart of the matter. While I’ve really tried to understand the details surrounding the economic meltdown, I’ve got to say that Formidable Opponent provided me with the clearest explanation so far. How can you forget Stephen equating the economic debackle to syphilis? Haha. I know it’s a cheesy word these days, but TCR is “edutainment” at its finest. Hmmm….TCR deserves a better term. Would “entercation” be better? Well, you get my point.

I’ve had the same experience as you. I used not like the Formidable Opponent segments. I generally don’t like watching someone debate or interview himself/herself on TV, but I’ve come to love and appreciate Formidable Opponent. Everything about it is so well done, especially the writing.
