Episode 4123 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

By Jenny with a Y on October 1st, 2008 ·

My favorite segment from tonight’s episode was the James Taylor interview. Stephen always seems excited when he has musical guests on the show, and I loved watching him when Taylor was performing. I also liked the Emmy mention. Rickles!!!!

I laughed out loud multiple times tonight. The Prescott Oil video was quite amusing. Love the biker trying to figure out how riding his bike was bad for the environment, and the mom being hit on by the narrator. I also liked the Tip/Wag intro (” … and if you don’t like my opinion, you can go f@#k yourself.” HA!)

Is it just me, or did James Taylor seem to be lip synching?

Yeah this episode rocked as always. I’d say the Presccott Oil bit was the best. I love the message Pressott Oil. Basically Presccott is coming up with ideas of how to help the environment, but they are not there and still need your money. They need money to develop these ideas. Everyone was totally confused. James Taylor was not really that good to me. It’s possible that he was lip synching. Stephen was really great and looked like he was on a caffeine high. That eyebrow action.

I believe James Taylor was singing live (and playing harmonica live) to a pre-recorded track. He looked and sounded exactly like I’ve heard him many times before (SNL, etc.), because I am over 40.

If you don’t think he’s very good, then you don’t think he’s very good — but that performance was exactly how he is. He’s okay in my book.

The Tip/Wage intro had me sold on it before it even got started – but then the rest of it just totally sealed the deal. the character breaks, the Vegas mention, the wall street jag offs, guatemala…oh my god, i was laughing so hard. i love when Stephen makes me laugh out loud. = )

Prescott Oil…what will they think of next? so funny with the narrator hitting on the woman and I loved the confused biker, too.

oh how i love my iTunes downloads. and NFZ. and Colbert. oh, the Joy Machine. Never let it end…

James Taylor was good but i was paying attention more to Stephen’s eyebrows and his performance than Taylor’s. whoops?

Tonight was another awesome night. It seemed to me that Stephen was a bit hopped up on something- presumably caffeine of some sort- and it always makes for hilarity.

I voted for the Tip/Wag, but I squealed a little at the Prescott Oil film when they talked to the mom and kids and the girl’s name was Amanda. I like to think of it as a little sorta-shout out. :) And the mention of my homestate of NC because of James Taylor. Haha.

Was that Laura Kraft playing the mom in the oil segment?

I’m pretty sure it was. That was a nice surprise to see her.

Voted for Prescott Oil – love Prescott promos of any type – but it was close… the Tip/Wag was great, the first segment was awesome, and it’s always lovely to see James. Was kind of shocked to see his hearing aid, though. I guess we’re all getting older…

That wasn’t a hearing aid, it was an in-ear monitor, so he could hear the backing track.

I have to be honest, it was a weaker Colbert Report than normal. I also didn’t get how he ran out of time. Didn’t he realize that the JT song would last so long? What happened?

I was confused by this as well, but I THINK it was meant to be a joke. My guess is that they deliberately set it up so that James Taylor would suddenly start singing in the middle of the interview, Stephen would then ask him to sing after the break and then “Stephen” would foolishly say the interview took longer than expected even though they meant for it to be that way all along. In short, his singing spot during the interview was meant to count as his performance. Correct me if I’m wrong!

I am sure it was meant to be a joke. He broke out into song during the interview and that was the performance. you can see the grin on Stephen’s face and he starts talking about how they somehow ran out of time. Very cute.

I liked the James Taylor part. for one thing he’s awesome and it was very pretty…and then Stephen’s “interpretive movements” were also hilarious. that part also made me forget about all the economic/political/religious worried from the whole rest of TDS/TCR and you know you’re getting stressed about the world when you have to escape from Jon and Stephen’s interpretations…

Just had to go back and watch again to generate a well thought out vote. Roadrunner wins just for overall coolness. I’ve enjoyed other artists in the past and more so from James. TipWag was really great and a close second.

Between the constant giggles from Prescott Oil & Tip/Wag, and then James Taylor, last night’s show was exactly the escape I needed. My brain is so burnt from the constant onslaught of news about Uncle Grumpy & the Alaska Disasta, FAIL BAIL fallout, and everything else.

I loved the desk-side jam session. I really enjoyed James Taylor’s performance…anyone else notice Stephen grooving along with the pen in his mouth? So adorable…

Yep. It’s that pen fetish again.

Like Jenny with a Y, I enjoyed watching Stephen while James Taylor sang his song. I think James Taylor is a very nice man, but I find his music painfully dull and Stephen certainly gave life to that segment for me: pen in mouth going up and down, alternating raised eyebrows, jutting neck back and forth, tapping of foot. Just fabulous. I could watch Stephen listen for hours:) I would also like to add his character break during Tip/Wag when, in response to people being offended to his Las Vegas comment, he said “Really? Awww’s for Las Vegas? Has it come to that?” Haha. I’m with you Stephen. Oh…one more thing…I LOVED the joke that went something like this: “Only oil companies love the Earth enough to penetrate it.” I guess that was rather sophomoric, but I loved it nonetheless:)

This is so sad, but that penetration joke made me laugh the hardest xD

Honestly, I thought the interview was dull, I mean, he seemed nice, but it was very forced. It was fun seeing Stephen jam along with the pen and his eyebrows though :D

P.S. I’m glad James Taylor started singing because he wasn’t giving poor Stephen anything to work with during the interview!

Taylor did come off as a bit ‘deer in the headlights’, that is, sorta stage frightened. But it all was a performance, scripted to make it seem like James is monosyllabic unless he’s telling us in a song. I thought it was comical how they worked this artist stereotype…fittingly applied to this legendary trooper and troubadour. But the closing remarks suggests he had relaxed and on his next appearance, may become a little more talkative…the musical comment response joke would have been more effective if Taylor had sung something that lasted less than 45 seconds. And then done it a second or third time, before Stephen ends the interview segment with the ’sing a song after a break’ request.

Forgettable song, to boot. Weak segment, but still better than 98% of the Tbone/naked trucker shows. Not sure why I draw that parallel…
