Buzz from the Blogosphere: Did Stephen Colbert discover John McCain’s “Tell”?

The insightful bloggers over at FiveThirtyEight.com have come up with an interesting theory about the John McCain tongue tic that Stephen featured on his show yesterday evening:

Tongue

Last night on ‘The Colbert Report’, Dr. Stephen T. Colbert (DFA) noted that John McCain was doing something peculiar with his tongue. The upshot of the joke was that McCain was repeatedly sticking his tongue out like a reptile.

Retired FBI agent Joe Navarro, a Bluff Magazine columnist and author of Read ‘Em and Reap, a book on poker tells culled from his professional interrogation experience, has written about the “tongue jut,” which is exactly what McCain was doing in the Colbert debate clips. Its significance?

I love it when Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert point out some small fact and it ends up being either important or entertaining, or possibly both. In case you missed it, here’s the full segment from last night’s show.

Also – this isn’t a particularly useful place to mention it, but I really wish there were a link to the comments at the end of each post. I don’t think that’d be too hard to add? I know you’re messing with layouts and such, and maybe you’re working on it as I type, but I just think it’s a tad inconvenient to have to scroll all the way back up to the beginning.

I’ve always been interested in body language, and this makes me raise my eyebrow and wanna look into it more. Hmm…

^yeah seriously– crazy rumors don’t usually actually get mentioned at the end of normal articles.

that article is fascinating. I should learn more about body language, get a book or something. they do it every election year so I’m waiting for the full Obama and McCain body language analysis.

Hey vigwig, my audio works for the embed, but still no luck watching videos on Colbert Nation. How about you? I believe you were the other poor soul left behind once everyone else found their videos working over there.

I love how after all that analysis and discussion of this tic, that the post pretty much ends with this:

“Or he could just have a really hilarious tic and it could mean nothing.”

    Pick a side! We’re at war! : )

John Legend on the BBC News website:

    “STEPHEN COLBERT, comedian

He’s one of the best comedians around right now – he’s a comedic genius, I think he’s one of the best. ”

I just finished watching a video of John McCain’s combative meeting with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register and noticed quite a lot of tongue jutting going on – funny I hadn’t noticed that before. Has he been doing more of that lately?
