Holy cow, people, has it been an amazing day for the Colbert Nation! Comedy Central’s Digital Media department finally debuted the wonderful new site, plus we’ve gotten a few more opportunities to see Stephen live and in person. And the news has been fantastic as well this week! I’m just worn out from all the excitement.
For those of you who have been poking around on ColbertNation 2.0, have any of you signed up for the new social media site over there? I have! I think this is going to be a fun way for the different communities of the Colbert Nation (NFZ, OSCLA, Colboardersm LJ’ers) to all congregate and get to know each other better. If you’d like to friend me, and I would really like it if you would, first sign up for an account. You may have to disable your AdBlock in Firefox to be able to see the sign up link in the black bar on the site. Then, click here to go to my profile page and click “Add As Friend”. I’ve added a link in the sidebar if you want to add me later.
Another idea – you might want to put your Colbert Nation profile link as your “Website” in the comments you leave here at No Fact Zone, so your friends and fans here can find you easier and add you as a friend. I also encourage you also to put the word “Zoner” somewhere in your Interests on your profile, so we can search for each other easily.
And here’s my question to you for this week, Zoners:
- When you read the news that all of the Colbert Report videos were available on ColbertNation.com, what was the first one you went looking for?
My first one was the one to the right, with the Steel Magnolia Ya Ya Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It brought back a lot of memories of when I first started watching the show. I can’t wait to hear your answers to this one. Make sure to post links to your newly minted vintage vids, but remember, all posts with links are moderated, so don’t fret too much if it takes a few minutes for it to show up in the thread. And I have to sleep/work sometime. :) Thanks!
Why am I still awake?!? Oh well. Happy Friday everyone! I still haven’t really had the time to look around on the new ColbertNation site. I only started watching the show religiously about a year ago. There are so many episodes I haven’t seen I could spend days there if I had the time. I’ll get through them all eventually I’m sure. I signed up for the community and can be found at community.colbertnation.com/profile/votequimby. Apparently some sort of message board is coming soon.
Jeez that picture is cute!

I dont remember which video was the first i looked for on the site, but i do remember heading straight over to CU and clicking on all the links as i had before in Musky Treasures and others so that I could see the videos that originally were “no longer available” including the employee reviews and the Filliam H Muffman ep as well.
I do need to do the search for the romance novel covers though…work has been keeping me busy enough, plus the never ending personal drama that is being alive, and all of this excitement!! its almost too much! i love it though. lovelovelovelovelove it!

I posted my taping report on the last Friday Free-for-all, but I’m afraid that I posted it rather late and thus many of you might have missed it. I might post it on Colbert Nation, but I wanted to share with you Zoners first and foremost. Thus, I am re-posting it here (DB, FEEL FREE TO DELETE MY TAPING REPORT FROM THE LAST FREE-FOR-ALL SINCE I KNOW IT TAKES UP MEMORY ON THE SERVER).
Hi all. I attended my first live taping of TCR this week and I’m still reeling from this surreal, wonderful, too-good-to-be-true experience. What better place to share my experience than here?
My sister and I arrived at the studio on Tuesday, September 2, 2008 around 2 p.m. Since we didn’t see a line, I asked an intern standing out there (apparently he was saving a parking space for someone) where we should stand and he kindly pointed us to a black fence that we could stand by until the gate opened at a later point. I found one Colboarder already waiting in line whose mom eventually came and thus my sister and I were #3 and #4.
Another two girls arrived shortly after us and were also sisters…students at Brown and Stanford no less! Mark, the audience coordinator, eventually came out and, as everyone else has mentioned, is one of the sweetest people who stays so calm and collected even when dealing with even the most difficult situations. Two interns eventually came out and asked for our names and ID’s…really polite and hospitable. You certainly can see how everyone on Stephen’s staff shares the same traits of professionalism and warmth.. We were eventually led into the waiting room after passing through security and had the chance to go to the bathroom and then sit down and watch some of the best clips from TCR including the infamous BKAD with Wexler and the tête-à-tête with Eleanor Holmes Norton. I loved the TCR poster in the room which displayed Stephen Colbert standing gallantly with an eagle perched on his arm along with the exclamation “It’s what Lincoln would have watched!”
Mark eventually came out and told us the unfortunate news that Stephen and his staff were rewriting the entire show (!), but that we would eventually be led into the studio. In the meantime, he threw out some trivia questions (didn’t raise my hand quick enough!) and held his own Q&A session in which we could ask anything about the running of the show. At one point a woman asked who the guest was that evening and he sheepishly responded that he didn’t know, but the show was going to be great no matter what. Haha. Someone else asked “How do you choose the writers for the show?” Mark explained that half of their writers hail from Second City (yet!) and that they do not take unsolicited submissions but rather must come through agents. I asked him if the Q&A with Stephen is recorded just for their personal archive and he responded that these segments were not recorded, but thought it was unfortunate since Stephen really shines in these off-the-cuff moments.
Another guy (forget his name) came out briefly to tell us the importance of cheering and laughing for Stephen like it was nobody’s business.
We FINALLY were led into the studio around 7 p.m. (leaving a freeze frame of Stephen’s rear end swaying against a glass panel to the beat of Copacabana) and were seated in the third row, near the center. I shyly asked Mark if there was any chance we could sit in the front row and he said no, but assured us that our seats were still great. Although not front row seats, they were still excellent seats for seeing Stephen at both his main desk and interview desk and I felt guilty for bothering Mark at all.
Pete Dominick, the warm-up comedian, came out and did a fabulous job…especially since he must have been out there for forty-five minutes! There were quite a few Canadians in the audience that night and he gave them a hard time in the nicest way. Interesting behind-the-scenes tidbit: He cited John Kerry as a not-so-nice a guest but said that Mike Chickadee was one of the nicest guests they had ever had on the show. He asked if anyone in the audience was going to be one of those “I was this close to Stephen” people and one girl in the front row raised her hand. Luckily my sister did not point me out. At one point he made a joke and said “I stole that from Jim Affiant. Anyone know who he is?” I don’t know why I didn’t raise my hand, but I wish I had– especially since he and Stephen had recently performed together in “The Love Guru.”
Pete shared some funny family stories and eventually said “OK, so this is the point when I start asking if anyone in the audience has any hidden talents such as magic tricks they would like to share.” We all clapped for him as we knew he had to entertain the audience for an especially long time that evening. At one point, four VIPS filed into one row and Pete joked that no one was listening to his jokes anymore because of these rude individuals who were interrupting his act. He asked them who they were and they explained they were relatives of Stephen’s at which point Pete suddenly became far more respectful. Haha. They appeared to be two brothers and two nephews of Stephen’s, but I’m not sure. Since Stephen has brothers that are significantly older, I’m hoping that they have sons that are about my age! The two supposed nephews looked cute and nerdy in that artsy sort of way and I believe one was wearing an argyle sweater. Pete eventually caught a signal that Stephen was close to being ready and getting the last touches on his make-up (must have been almost 8 p.m. at this point!).
Mark came out and said one of the best moments during Q&A was when a young African-American guy said to Stephen “Dad?” and Stephen, without thinking, recognized him and called him by some fictional name. Forgive me for forgetting the details on this question. Mark gave one final pep talk and then………….
Stephen leaped out of nowhere, ran around the desk with arms outstretched, high-fived everyone in the front row and performed his famous twirl! A woman in a black cocktail dress (not Allison Silverman) was placing some paperwork on Stephen’s desk and he came up behind her, put his hand around her waist and jokingly said “Well, hello, who are you?” I obviously wanted to be this woman, but I digress. I will note here that at no point during the show could I completely believe Stephen was there in person. He is truly larger-than-life and has one megawatt smile.
Then the Q&A session began:
Q: Stalin or Hitler?
A: (Stephen looking puzzled) You mean to have sex with?
Q: How many houses do you own?
A: I’ll have to check with my people.
Q: I am deaf in one ear and I know that you are as well. How have you coped with this? Any advice?
A: Which ear are you deaf in? Because if it’s a certain ear, that means you’re gay. Oh shit, that makes me gay. Don’t worry, you’ll make it in life man (trembling voice on verge of crying). Don’t you hate it when you’re listening to your ipod and you’re only hearing the beat and not the lyrics (then makes some onomatopoeia sound for the beats). There was a little more dialogue between the two of them, but I couldn’t catch all of it.
Q: You’ve spoken many languages on your show, but not Japanese. How come?
A: Stephen responds in Japanese. Case closed!
I raised my hand to ask the final question and Stephen first said “Yes, sir” since he first saw one of his staff in the aisle right next to me raise his hand for some random reason. He laughed, quickly apologized to me and said “Yes, miss.” I’m not offended by miss when Stephen says it My question was not he most original, but I really wanted to ask it even though it had been asked at least once before.
Q: During the Philadelphia primary, you began singing “L-O-V-E” to Michelle Obama, but you were rudely interrupted and I wondered if you could finish the song for us tonight.
A: “L…is for the way you look tonight…” At this point, I fainted and was taken out of the studio by my sister who was luckily a nurse. Just kidding! Stephen sang the entire song and looked straight at me for the first few bars and before surprising the woman in front of me by suddenly putting his face right in front of hers. This must have been really something for her as she was the one person in the audience who had never even seen the show before! He then ended the song by bending backwards with arms outstretched and microphone in hand. Everyone clapped. Stephen Colbert sang a love song to me. I heard Stephen sing in person. Words cannot express….
Before we knew it, the show had begun and I witnessed first-hand why Stephen Colbert was where he was in the ladder of success: professionalism, impeccable timing and the ability to juggle so multiple things at once. Although not the strongest episode, I think Stephen gave it 100% after an exhaustive rewrite that evening and starting the show an hour later than usual…and still taking time for the Q&A! Between commercial breaks, he threw out Wrist Strong bracelets and what appeared to be small silver pepper shakers (?) to the audience. He made some funny faces during the commercial breaks and at one point my sister and I could have sworn he was looking our way as he was making funny expressions while drinking his coke! It’s funny, but during breaks you feel that he is still performing for you, but is somewhere in between his character and real self. At one point, he put his legs up on his desk and did some stretching moves and pretended to stretch his groin area. I know that sounds odd. You had to be there to see what I mean. He had his make-up touched up and jokingly started brushing the make-up artist’s hair. Allison Silverman, who looked especially tired that night, came out and consulted with Stephen on some script changes.
I LOVED watching Stephen’s reactions as they played all of the “Make McCain Exciting Videos” and from what I could tell, he especially enjoyed watching the O’Reilly and Elvis videos. I could see him mouthing McCain’s words.
Before the interview, Stephen quickly said to Laura D’Andrea Tyson “You can’t leave now!” I found her to be a rather dry guest who just seemed to be reeling off statistics and not providing enough actual dialogue, but I thought Stephen did a great job and I enjoyed his joke regarding her boldness to wear a splash of color throughout the fall and of course the joke about her sucking his teat. To the side of the interview table, a man held up a piece of paper with a number one on it to signal to Stephen when he had one minute left.
Stephen only fumbled his lines twice: briefly when he talked about oil drilling and at the very end of the show when he briefly wears the Mary Tyler Moore beret and says how he blows our minds. Smiling, he said “I just couldn’t get through the show without f***ing it up at the very end.” I loved the second fumble since he adorably placed the hat back on his head, rested his chin in his palm and pouted in the cutest way as he waited for the camera to roll again.
Afterwards, Stephen took the time to shake everyone’s hand in the first row and thanked all of us for coming. Mark then had us leave and we noticed that the bathrooms were now chained off. Haha! I guess they really like to get the audience out of there after they record our laughs!
While my sister took my picture in front of the TCR awning outside, Laura D’Andrea Tyson and Stephen’s relatives came outside. While I hoped that Stephen would soon follow, no such luck. I wouldn’t want to bother him anyhow if he came out to talk with family and friends.
Nevertheless, it was an amazing evening. Stephen’s unbelievable energy and charisma were something to behold and his willingness to sing “L-O-V-E” upon my request was well…something I will never forget. This was truly one of the most amazing days of my life.

awesome story, with the singing of course being the highlight! that’s excellent. all fangirls with singing moments are connected by that experience…yeahhhh.
also, thanks for sharing the answer about if the Q&As were taped. I have always wondered about that and I thought it would be reasonable to have them recorded by some hidden camera (or even just a mic).
finally, I like the very on-target remark about him being half-in-character during the breaks between segments. it’s a very interesting dynamic and I like how you expressed it!

hmmm, I don’t know if I posted it on here…it was in a livejournal I had linked as my “website” for a while. I got to sing Holland, 1945 with him during a break. well, I sang, he probably mouthed the lyrics, but of course it’s all about the eye contact. I had become kind of obsessed with the song for a while but I hadn’t planned on singing it before I got there. then I realized he was scanning the audience for people mouthing the lyrics and I was like “darn, I HAVE to take this opportunity!” and so I caught his attention. it’s is not a unique experience, but still unlike anything I personally had done before! one of my best impulsive decisions ever!!

Yeah, he was a bald white guy…which reminds me…He made another bald white guy in the front row stand up along side him and imagine how scary they would look together in a park. Haha. I think he is the warm-up comedian for almost every show. Has anyone ever had a different warm-up comedian?

I made a bee line for The Word: Bard which I’d been dying to see ever since I became a fan of the show. I’m an English major and after studying Shakespeare for well over a year, this was truly the best of both of my worlds! LOVED IT!
It’s interesting to note that the old TCR video site is no longer there, and it seems that any video links from the former TCR site automatically redirect you to the new shiny Colbertnation.com. The profile capabilities are way cool and I’ll definitely be setting up a profile very soon.
I have to say, in all the weeks off the show has had, I’d say this past one was the most exciting, by far! Thank you Comedy Central, for giving a brand spankin’ new home to the treasure trove of Colbert Report videos.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
For anyone planning to quit their job, I advise you to be aware of what you leave behind, because someone will be assigned to go through your stuff to sort the important stuff from what needs to be trashed.
Sure, this has kept me amused since yesterday, but I’m not sure you really want some random stranger seeing your poetry and doodles, finding the little notes you wrote about your colleagues, quirking her eyebrow at your ridiculous mass of napkins, discovering your first paystub, noticing the dozens of legal pads you only used two pages of before moving onto a fresh one, and just balking at the realization that you never cleaned out your desk since you were hired in 1993. I’m not even exaggerating.

It’s funny you should mention this – I’ve been at my new job for about a month now, and I’m starting to slowly get new responsibilities. Today I got the files from my predecessor that my co-worker has been maintaining while I get up to speed on purchasing.
And dear God, that man couldn’t spell, he files “Direct Electric” under E, he spells the abbreviation of Miscellaneous as Miscc … the list goes on. Now, I’m not the perfect speller, but I’m absolutely anal about spelling and organization when I’m filing. *sigh*

Also, about a month before I quit my job, I purged my desk of EVERYTHING – files, pens, anything personal. I took it all home in anticipation of one day not being able to stand it anymore and just walking out and never coming back.
Luckily it didn’t come to that (although it was darn close a day or two), so when I was leaving, I just picked up my purse and my mug and a couple of books, and I was out of there.

I mentioned this on the thread that announced the new access to the videos – I’ve started watching all the episodes, starting from Day 1 on October 17, 2005. I only started watching in summer of 2006, so while I’ve seen a lot of clips from earlier episodes, no full episodes.
Having seen the Gravitas Off and Truthiness from the first episode, I think I had an impression that the show sprung forth fully formed (a la Athena) and had no need of developing over time. It’s been interesting to watch the early episodes and see that wasn’t really the case. The character wasn’t really fully developed, the tone wasn’t really set to what it is like now, and even some aspects of the set from then seem a less perfect reflection of Colbert’s character.
Some observations from the first 2 weeks of shows:
1) the character is not set yet, and seemed a bit like a combination of Stephen’s persona from The Daily Show, and real Stephen, then gradually morphed into the Colbert Report character we all now know and love.
2) it seems much more gentle! very light on the yelling and belligerent certitude. There’s a lot less maniacal devotion from the audience too, less noise in general from laughing to cheering.
3) Stephen is actually thoughtful and curious in some of the interviews — real Stephen coming through a lot more. (I think I remember reading he finds it hard to curb his natural curiousity in interviews he’s genuinely interested in, to stay in character.) He even pursued his pet observation about Nixon being a liberal several times.
4) his hair was so fluffy! :)
5) guests are a bit bewildered and amused, especially by the self-aggrandizing run from the anchor desk to the interview desk. It’s all so new and it’s really fun to watch that freshness.
6) sometimes Stephen’s character acknowledges the newness of the show; other times he seems to be referencing a fake history that doesn’t exist yet to give the show more weight (like saying, “once again bears are the #1 threat” during only the second threatdown, and in the first they were #4)
It seems to me that after about 2 weeks of episodes (which is a really short period of time, if you think about it!), they were really starting to hit their stride, the character and tone of the show was fleshing out, and it seems much more recognizable as the show we know today.
two other tidbits:
1) in the second show, Stephen is interviewing Leslie Stahl, talking about yesterday’s debut show, and she says, “Did you hear about Tim Russert?” Stephen hastily leans in and says with genuine concern “What? Is he ok?!” Tim was fine, Leslie just wanted to relate the story that after seeing the show, he wanted his desk in the shape of a T! But, it is a weirdly bittersweet moment to watch now. It is still hard to believe he is gone, and we could really use his integrity and tenaciousness now in this political season.
2)it seems like it’s been a while since the show has done any really goofy stunts, like guitarmegeddon or running for president. I guess the last time Stephen really invited people to participate in his universe in a notable way (not counting green screen challenges) might have been the PA primaries in Phila., w/ the EdWords and appearances from the candidates. Watching the glee of the newness of those early shows makes me wish for some of that goofiness, even though the shows have really been very good lately.
Also: the Jeff Daniels interview was brilliant, possibly the first one Stephen really nailed in character, closely followed by Ken Burns (one of my favorites!) and Eliot Spitzer, another one that’s bittersweet to watch now for different reasons.
sorry for the lengthy observations, but no-one in my non-virtual world is as intersted as I am, so here is where I get to vent all my Stephen-related analysis that’s kicking around in my brain!

Holly, I very much enjoyed your post and noticed a lot of the same things. I torrented (is that a word?) all of 2005 and 2006 and the last half of 2007…well…July – Strike…a few months ago and especially at that time I had no one to share things with.
as for the quitting, etc. I have made a habit to never keep too much at my job. I have been there about 7 months now (and one year in my new state across the country! woo hoo me!!!) but i have never really felt comfortable. I am going to work on “saving” my staff and my job over the next couple weeks, but also on cleaning up all the files and making sure there is no trace of me around. When i go, so goes the files etc that I created for the job. They dont get to keep my genius and my creativity when i go.

i actually have a different, kinda random question for db and everyone else who contributes to NFZ: how do you guys get/make your screencaps from episodes of the show? what about pictures from events, like the one for this post: how do you search for them? just curious, ’cause it seems like you’ve always got a photo for every occasion! =)

Well some caps we just get from CC vids, we make them with a screen capture and a little photoshop. Others, like the one above, we just do searches on photo sites and on Flickr to find them. We’ve been blogging a while, so we have lots of sites. And, as always, we use the heck out of ColbertPics.com – excellent selection of pics.

horribly off topic, but i just wanted to say that i am having a ridiculously good time texting my “secret” to others who have posted their number on the Post Secret blog. wow.

That’s meeeee! I want lots of friends.
The first video I searched for was the Intro from the very first episode of the show. I started watching in October ’06 so I’m hoping to eventually watch that entire first year!
So far I’ve watched . . . the first two episodes. It’s amazing to see how much his character has evolved, but is essentially the same. And I always thought that the #1 threat on the original ThreatDown would be bears, so I was SURPRISED. o.O

Awww! Cute picture!!!!
I’m so excited about the new CN web site! It’s shiny and new, and I like the direction they’ve taken it. It’s obvious that a huge amount of work went into the site, and I love that we they linked us.
THANK YOU Comedy Central!!!
I joined the CN community so feel free to friend me. My profile name is Jenny with a Y.
To answer the question about the videos, I basically started searching for 2005 episodes so I could go back and start from the beginning. I also searched for Paul Dinello videos in case I hadn’t seen all of the Tad segments. I miss Tad….

I sent you a friend request (I’m “rogue haggis” over there). :-)
Also, does anyone have any idea why it won’t let me change my profile URL from the randomly generated number-thingy to something more reasonable, like my board name? I’ve tried everything I can think of, but it still doesn’t like me.

I had a little trouble with that as well. I just tried entering it four or five times and it finally saved what I wanted.

Hah! I figured it out. I was entering the info wrong. When in doubt, it’s probably “user error.”

So, here’s a random question. I’ve seen a TDS picture of Stephen reporting from a shower stall. There are two men standing behind him. Have any of you seen this segment? If so, do you know what it’s called? I would love to see the video. It looks like it would be a funny one. Thanks for the help!

it’s called Media Responsibility and there’s lots of old correspondent action!

OMG! That clip was hilarious!!! THANK YOU for finding it even though my description wasn’t completely accurate. There was a man and a women in the shower, not two men.

I hope people are still reading the Friday Free-for-all, because I have a question about tickets to the show. We’re going to be in NYC the week of October 20. There aren’t tickets available online at this time. Do I just go and stand in line and pray? Can I write to them and beg? I’m coming from California, and don’t go back East ever, so I really must attend a taping. Also need to go to TDS. Anyone have any bright ideas?

If they’re taping that week (I’m not sure they are), you can try for standby. That’s a separate line from the general audience ticketholders. The last couple of time I was there, quite a few standby people got in.
You can also keep checking the ticket page between now and then. If someone cancels their tickets for that date, you might be able to grab them.

Ann G, thanks so much for the info. I don’t mind standing in line for Stephen. I’ll keep checking back on the ticket page, but otherwise I’ll be 1st in line in standby.

I have been saving up knowledge of how the tickets are currently distributed for TCR and this is what I know.
I can tell you that they are almostly definitely taping the week of the 20th. when TDS gives out tickets they do many weeks at a time, and I saw that only the week of the Oct 13th was devoid of tickets. so that is good news for you!
I do not think TCR tickets for all of the week of October 20th are completely gone. as I recall, October 23rd has been up at least once, and maybe the 22nd as well. But I don’t think the whole week is gone yet.
this means you should find a way to check the tickets and check them often. memorize the url of the tickets page and add bookmark in your most-used browser. tickets are most often open during the day on weekdays, but I check all the time anyway. keep checking right up until the last day possible.
if you can’t get tickets and you won’t have other opportunities, I highly recommend waiting as a standby. most recent taping reports indicate that the majority of standbys get in each time. if you can, get there early (like 2pm or so) and you will have a very good shot at getting into the audience! if you’re there a few days and have choices, go on the rainy or blustery day when casual standbys will find something to do indoors instead.
I know less about TDS except that the regular tickets for that day should be gone, but I still wouldn’t rule out them becoming reclickable. there is a reasonable chance of this happening actually. I don’t know where one reads TDS reports (do they exist?) and I haven’t gone to my first TDS taping (yet!!) so I can’t tell you a single thing about the standby situation for that show. maybe someone else can help?
I check these ticket pages tons of times a day, so if I see something during that week open up for either TDS or TCR I’ll reply to your post again so you get can email about it!
sorry for that being so long!! let us know how it goes if you do get there, and good luck getting tickets!!

Um, there are no words for how depressing this is…
For some reason, the actual dancing in the “Sexy Back” video has been cut out!! All that’s left is Stephen announcing Ellen’s People’s Choice Award.
I think I’m going to curl up into a little ball in the corner and weep.
