Klassic Kolbert: Episode 2019 (2/8/2006)

BBBLT

I cannot begin to express how amazingly happy I am that I can watch old episodes of ‘The Colbert Report’ that I’ve never seen. Yes, there are episodes that even I have not seen. And I’ve seen a LOT of shows. So I’ve felt like a kid in a candy store the last few days. It’s interesting to see the differences in styles of delivery, of audience reactions, and of the recurring segments that are still on the show such as The WØRD and Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger.

This one is a show that I had never seen before, and the B.B.B.L.T. just got me tickled. Well, that and the test drive of a new haircut. (If you want to see more of the new ‘do, click here.) The only thing I can figure out is that it was a Reagan joke gone wrong or something. The BKAD was uproarious, and I got to see a “Fract” for the first time.

I’ve been listening to these “new” classic episodes on my headphones, and the audio seems to be enhanced – the background noise in The WØRD definitely goes from one speaker to another. So try listening to the show with your headphones and let me know if you hear any difference from the old episodes.

I don’t hear anything!
not just nothing different, but there is no sound on these embedded videos for me!
I just checked on youtube and everything’s at an appropriate volume setting. I also watched an intro from last week on the TCR main site page, and that was fine.
weird.

I visually like the “In-Box” feature at the end though. (I saw it scrolling to the bottom– I did not watch this whole episode without audio!)

Can you watch the entire episode on the TCR site since it doesn’t work for you here? The sound works for me on NFZ, but I can’t get anything on the TCR site.

yes, I can. at least I can see and hear the beginning. I don’t have enough time for the whole show right now (but I will watch it later– I can’t wait!)

This happens to me sometimes and I find it works if I close my browser (I use Firefox) and open it again.

I think it’s when I play something on another video player, but I haven’t found the exact correlation yet.

DB,

This was such a rich, wonderful episode on so many different levels (old segments, character breaks, solid interview, singing, Ben Franklin before the Philly convention…):

I love it when he says “Brouhaha.”

I love the B. L. T. segment since this is actually is Stephen’s favorite sandwich (I read this in an article awhile back).

I could tell Stephen was still being modest about his singing abilities at this point in the show during the BKAD segment, but I love his trumpet sounds:)

I love that he pretended his fly was open.

I love it when Stephen breaks character during the interview and Dershowitz goes on to explain that he’s Jewish and Stephen, stilll smiling, responds with “I know. I know.” I LOVE Stephen’s smile after he says this (citation 2:11!)! Melts….

Gah! I could go on and on…someone else post. Thanks for letting me gush.

I believe that the story behind the hair is that this was the day that they taped the “Charlene” video. Stephen’s hair was full of product from doing the 80’s do, and they didn’t have time to get it all out and style it properly, so they got it wet and slicked it back, hence the Reagan-style do. (I was at my high school reunion and couldn’t remember names, but this, this I remember!)

Does anyone know where we can get these videos in Canada? I went to the CTV link but it really sucks and there isn’t many videos there.

DB – I’m really loving these ‘old’ episodes. I’ve seen everyone of the pre-strike episodes at least 4 or 5 times (you know why) and actually miss them a bit.

It was nice to see Stephen cut loose a bit during and after the strike, but the old style TCR still has a soft spot in my heart.

Dustdevil: You are exactly right about the hair – the Charlene video was recorded on Feb 7th and the hair’s the smoking gun, so to speak.
