Problems with videos on the main ‘Colbert Report’ site?

questionI’ve heard multiple reports on people having issues watching videos on the main ‘Colbert Report’ video site, but these same people aren’t having issues with the embeddable videos featured here.

If you’re having these problems, could you please do a quick rundown of the issue in the comments here? Please give details such as:

  • What browser are you using (IE 6/7, Firefox 2.x/3, Safari)?
  • Are you on High-speed internet or dial up?
  • Does trying to access the video lock up the browser?
  • Is it just the TCR site or are there problems with the TDS site?

Thanks!

I’ve been having video viewing problems since mid August. Despite several workaround fixes I still see a only a white panel instead of the vids, (whether clips or whole episodes) and a grey message saying “movie not loaded”. If I right click to Adobe Flash it says my flash is successfully installed (the latest version). I use firefox 3.1.0 (which doesn’t lock up), on high speed dsl. The flash works everywhere else but the CC site for both Colbert and Stewart. I’ve emailed CC support 3x and heard nothing back, I’ve done all the suggestions seen on various forums to no avail. It’s very frustrating so thanks for this thread.

Embeds are working a-okay for me, but for the last few weeks, the quality of the actual videos kept going in and out, from perfectly clear and crisp, to exceptionally blurry and fuzzy (sort of like I felt like I needed glasses). I’m using Firefox 3.0.1 on a cable modem.

In all honesty, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it had something to do with Comcast’s (my ISP) broadband caps they’ve imposed on their subscribers. If you use more than an “average” user’s bandwidth, they can go in and purposefully decrease the amount of bandwidth at any time, which could by why my videos are coming in and out. The New York Times actually published an article about this very thing not long ago, which you can read here. There’s a lot more to it and it seems this cap will especially effect those viewers who use BitTorrent or other such file sharing service to watch the show.

My techie hubby thinks it’s our computer since it’s from the Pliocene Epic (aka: 2000) but I’m not so sure, since the problem seems to occur only after I’ve watched a handful of vids online.

I’m actually doing an in depth communications study on Comcast’s capping bandwidth. If anyone’s interested in knowing how this is a violation of net neutrality and a threat to your rights, just respond and I’ll get you the info.

I am getting the blurry on the small seperate clips on the cc site too.The full episode player for both TDS &TCR have notices on them saying-”not available in your country- UK”, With links to fx[which you have to buy.But DO.NOT.WANT] or ch4 .Both channels which pay to show these prog`s here in the UK.”FX”currently stands for many rude things in my house ..

    My browser is Firefox3.0.1.

I think they`ve been stuffing the canadians this way for ages[blocking them so they pay subscriptions to cable or satelite] and decided it was time to do the same to the rest of the world.I am resigned.
    Your embeds are crystal clear:)

Yeah they’ve been blocking Canadians for quite some time now. But they’ve mostly just been requesting us to go to the ~Canadian equivalent~ of these streamed videos (though maybe also encourage us to pay for “The Comedy Network”). But that sites sucks compared to TDS.com since it only has so many clips from the past. It’s not a great archive site.

yeah for some reason they’ve been blocking Canadians, but I remember for like a week last month, we had access to all the vids on both sites for some strange reason, not that I’m complaining, it’s was great while it lasted, but then they blocked us again =(

Similar to what the first guy said, hope this is helpful.

    * I’m using Windows XP, IE 7, the newest version of Firefox 2 (I think 2.11) and Chrome. Each one fails. In Firefox I have noscript and adblockplus, but shutting these off doesn’t change anything. I have also uninstalled flash and followed the link on comedycentral.com to reinstall it.
    * High Speed Connection.
    * Does not cause the browser to crash.
    * Any video hosted by Comedy Central or any of their affiliated websites, but not embedded video from Comedy Central. If I can get the imbed codes I could load them into my blog one at a time and watch each of them there in the tiny box.

Streaming videos that use flash work on any site I can think of including embedded Comedy Central video. When I attempt to view any Comedy Central videos on any of their sites (TCR, TDS, CC.com) all I get is a white box indicating that flash opened but no video player loaded. I do see the status bar claim that it is waiting to open page entertainment.mtvnservices.com/… but then it just switches to done.

At the Comedy Central main page, the player that should appear at the top doesn’t open and I get a white box. Hovering the mouse over the “playlist” to the left of the space where the player should be changes the items color to orange, but they don’t allow me to click on them like they should.

It hasn’t been too long since I accessed comedycentral.com, but they now seem to be having a problem doing anything flash related. The problem only occurrs on my PC and not my laptop, so I think there is some sort of software conflict going on.

    Thanks for posting Hersh.
Do you have Norton utilities on your pc and not on your laptop? I wonder if its Norton related? I allow popups on the CC site, that didn’t work either, still the white box. Are the CC web people aware of this? They must be – many have emailed them about these issues. There’s no info on Adobe either. I use windows XP also. Doesn’t work on Safari either.

No Norton Utilities at the moment, I’m just running Mcafee on the Desktop. I think it’s AVG on the laptop.

I emailed CC once via email and got no response, but when I used their web form it displayed the message that they get so many requests they only respond to a small number of them.

I am having the exact same problem as the first poster. I see a blank white box instead of videos. I’m using high speed DSL and the same problem occurs whether I use Firefox or IE. (I have the latest versions of both, Firefox 3, IE 7). I have tried all the troubleshooting tips for both browsers, and even tried some suggestions from the Adobe forums. Nothing works. All other internet videos play quickly and with no problems (ex: Hulu, youtube, etc). It does not lock the browser. Everything loads except for a white box where the video should play. This happened to me in mid-August. I went to the site and it had been playing perfectly. One day it told me to upgrade to shockwave, and I did, and it hasn’t worked since. It is both TCR and TDS. And it has been terribly ridiculously frustrating!

I’m on high-speed internet and the browser does not lock up, but rather you just get a white screen where the videos used to be. This happens with comedycentral.com and the colbert site there and thedailyshow.com. No problems with embeds though…

I’m not in America though, so I figured it had something to do with my location, maybe something with copyrights and whatnot. I’m using Firefox 3.0.1 and XP. Tried using IE and Safari, none of these work either.

And then I tried to view another and again with the black screen. Of course, embedded vids work fine so I have to keep copying and pasting the code elsewhere to watch it, which is rather annoying so I don’t really watch many videos other than on here.

I’ve had the same problem since some time in August… it doesn’t matter if I used my desktop or laptop, I get the same problem… I orignally thought that it was the ultrasurf program I use (great to be Canadian, eh?) but I went to other sites that are blocked and they work just fine, so it’s not ultrasuf..
my desktop is winxp and my laptop is win vista… both run ie7 when ultrasurf is running, cuz that’s all it’ll work with… both computers use avg antivirus and I have no other 3rd party pop up blockers or things of that nature.

Using IE7, high-speed connection thru Telus, Flash 9,and no Norton antivirus.

When I first directly access TDS or TCR sites, at the bottom of my screen, in the taskbar(?), I get a little “14 items to download” message. It rapidly counts down until it says “1 item remaining to download” and there it stays . So I can see everything else on the page– pics and text, but where the video screen should be, I get the white screen. The browser doesn’t seem to freeze, it just can’t/won’t download the last item (or does that constitute freezing?)

Since I’m Canadian I use Ultrasurf, which is annoying in many ways , but it used to do the job. I can still use it to see videos embedded here, thank god, but I can’t see anything directly on TDS, TCR, or HULU, for that matter.

I thought it was an Ultrasurf thing, and contacted them about it. I’m surprised/happy (misery loves company) that it’a a problem with the site, and not just my computer

I thought I’d go ahead and add my feedback even though it’s similar to what others have already said.

At home, I use a laptop with Windows Vista. I have a DSL line. I have tried watching videos using several different browers: IE7, Safari 1.3, Firefox 2, Google Chrome (yes, I’m a geek. I have them all…). Everything was working fine for me until mid-August.

Here is what is happening now:
Chrome and Safari: The page loads but I get the white box others have mentioned. I tried installing the recommended plug-in but it didn’t work. The odd thing is that I can still watch full episodes using Safari, just not the individual videos.

Firefox: It’s very spotty. The video may load but then lock up. The sound goes in and out as well.

IE7: I can watch all videos but the quality goes in and out. Sometimes the picture is fuzzy.

At the office, I use Windows XP and IE (6, I think). The videos won’t load at all. I just get the white box.

This trouble only applies to videos on CC owned web sites: CC, TDS, TCR. I can watch all CC videos which have been embedded on blogs like NFZ.

I had to install Adobe Flash 9 (because the site told me to) and since then the videos haven’t been playing, except for the embedded videos. I haven’t tried playing the full episodes.

I’m using Windows Vista on a Sony Vaio laptop, Firefox 3, high speed broadband. Anyone know how I can fix this issue? This isn’t a fix for the problems mentioned above, but I thought it was worth reminding people that Spike.com (typing in iFilm.com also appears to redirect there) is also authorized to show Comedy Central content, and it generally posts segments from both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report the day after they originally air, just like the official Comedy Central sites do.

I was told that the Spike.com vids were working even for UK viewers recently, so you may want to give that a try.

After clearing all private data and formatting the hard drive (just kidding), I remembered I had made a change to one of the settings in “about:config” (enter that in the address bar): “network.http.sendRefererHeader”. Glad it worked out for you. That “Flash Player” folder is just a cache and if it gets corrupted it can cause problems. It doesn’t get deleted by uninstalling, so re-installing doesn’t fix the problem. Deleting the folder deletes the cache. The backup thing is just for safety.

Incidentally, if you are using Vista, that folder may be in another place. Probably a hidden folder under C:users….

I experienced the same issues as many of you. I came to the opinion that this problem is coming from the sites in question, rather than from your computer. With the help of NFZ…(BIG THANKS to ZFZ!), it has been reported it the appropriate IT Specialists in the potential originating site and I am assured that these IT personnel are treating it as a high priority to resolve. So my advice is to wait, for the problem to be handled, at its source, which I hope should now happen quickly. My advice is, do not waste your time, trying to solve this on your computer, because it will just come up again. (I had tried everything, including upgrading to latest Adobe version, Spybot spyware remover etc, but nothing worked.) So lets see how long it takes for the problem to be resolved. Please post back, if you find that the problem has gone away in the next day or so. Regarding Kelly’s question, “What exactly does it want to store on my computer anyway?” – well this is impossible to know, becuase it is an external program and I did not want to let it run, to find out! But in my case, it says that it wants to download something connected to upgrading Adobe. (This can happen if the user is trying to view something in Adode which is provided in say version 9, when the user is using version 8, and the message may suggest that you should download the latest version, in order to view the file. But this does not work like the typical message and many user, like me are finding that the message is “non-responsive” when you click on the deny or close buttons) In my case, I separately downloade the latest upgrades from the Adobe site and this message continues to appear – therefore any valid reason for the messge to appear, should be gone, right? but no, it keeps coming back, so something is not right and needs to be fixed at the source.

P.S. Do not de-activate your popup blockers, as I think some of the participants in the above discussion may have done – this would open your computer to wider risks from other sources.

I have been seeing the same thing on The Daily Show since Friday: the entertainment.mtvnservices.com pop up. It’s incredibly annoying and I have no idea how to stop it. If we are all experiencing it, it’s the comedy central site.

    1. visit http://www.colbertnation.com and click to view a full episode with either Firefox or Safari on my Macbook (Mac OS X 10.5.5)
    2. in the middle of an episode, click on another episode in the episode picker or choose to click on The daily show.

80% of the time, either Firefox or Safari will freeze. If you are not quick enough to terminate the web browser with Command-Option-Escape, the cpu will fail to respond and your are forced to restart the computer.

I am having the exact same problem as the first post and then many subsequent ones.
I am using Firefox 3.0.3 & Flash 9 with Windows XP. Whenever I open comedy central website or the daily show, colbert report any of them, I get a white box in place of the video clip. On right clicking it gives me the flash menu. On comedy central main page when I click on the videos in the left panel nothing happens.
I could watch the videos a while back, I think a couple of months back.
Also, I can view the comedy central videos embedded in blogs.
I do not have any problems with Youtube or many other sites where the video players need flash.
I am glad ot have found this forum. I hope this issue gets resolved soon.

I have experienced the same problem as many you, when running video on comedy central sites(e.g. Colbert Report/Daily Show).
In fact, based on the input to this forum and other forums discussing this error, it appears that we are experiencing 2 different symptions coming from a single problem.

PROBLEM 1. Some of us get the “white” or “blank” video screen.
Here is an EXAMPLE of user with problem 1:
“When I attempt to view any Comedy Central videos on any of their sites (TCR, TDS, CC.com) all I get is a white box indicating that flash opened but no video player loaded. I do see the status bar claim that it is waiting to open page entertainment.mtvnservices.com/… but then it just switches to done.”

PROBLEM 2. Some of us get a popup, which does not go away at all, or if it does, it reappearsagain in 5 seconds.

Here’s an EXAMPLE of a user with Problem 2:
“When I play videos on either the Daily Show or Colbert Report sites I get a small screen popping up in the center of the screen requesting that I allow entertainment.mtnservices.com to store information on my computer. Pressing deny made it go away the first time, but did nothing when it popped up again a minute later.”

      POSSIBLE CAUSE OF PROBLEM

Users have shared the following feedback:
      - Problem is specific to Comedy Central sites. Users can still run videos from other sited without problems.
      - Both problems 1 and 2 appear to relate to the “entertainment.mtvnservices.com” embed.

For problem 1 users, the embed could be blocked, (typically for Norton users) and the video may then be blocked, giving the white/blank screen.

For problem 2 users, they embed gives a pop-up which users have been called: “non-responsive”, “recurring”, “annoying”. It is requesting you to allow entertainment.mtnservices.com to store information on your computer to enable FLASH 9.0). I was a user with problem 2. In my case, the popup was non-responsive, so if I clicked on “deny” or “close”, nothing happend. I downloaded the latest version of flash and I still got the pop-up.

      POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

      Let’s take problem 2 first…

I have heard that this problem is being worked on in the origination site. As of today, the popup (at least for me) is now “responsive”. I clicked the OK button today, immediately when I entered the daily show website, and the message disappeared. That was 6 hours ago, and I watched 4 full episodes of Daily and 3 of Colbert, and the popup has not come back. It may be that they have improved the performance of the popup, or I could be that the pop-up appeared immeidately when I logged in and my first click anywhere on the website was on the OK button of the popup. But anyway it is gone.

Another user recently reported this solution: “I’m not sure if this works for anyone but I just right mouse clicked on the dialog and it has an option to “never ask again”. – THIS SOULDS LIKE THE BEST SOLUTION, IF IT WORKS FOR YOU.

What worked for me was to try to click on the OK button, becuase as of today it seems to be working, but please read my disclaimer below:

      DISCLAIMER
The above solutuion worked for me, but follow it at your own risk. I can’t give a recommendation to others to accept/OK this popup. This is your decision, but as the source seems to be the comendy central site itself, I made a judgement call that it would be OK. As miss SK would say “as I personally may believe…” this is probably just a badly designed pop-up/embed, rather than something sinester. Please be aware that, at least 2 users reported they clicked repeatedly on the deny button, and eventually it stopped appearing, however, from that point the videos stopped playing and all they see are the ads in-between the videos.

      POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS FOR PROBLEM 1

To recap again, for problem 1 users, the embed could be blocked, (typically for Norton users) and the video may then be blocked, giving the white/blank screen.

Some users have resolved this stage of the problem, by amending settings in “Norton”. Here is a link to the “fix” which was proposed in the Daily show forum. In this solution, specific security setting related to the sites, were applied in Norton. See this link:

      http://forum.thedailyshow.com/tds/board/message?board.id=support_2008_oct&thread.id=3

Additionally, some users found that this “Fix” was also requied, which refers to the Abobe Support Site and enables you to increase the space needed to make available for Adobe Flash.

      http://forum.thedailyshow.com/tds/board/message?board.id=support_2008_oct&thread.id=23

If you are a problem 1 user, then this may help to fix your problem.

I am just passing on what I have learned from others, so I hope it helps, but if it does not work, please do not blame me. I really hope it does work for you.

Lastly, if you fix problem 1, this means you have crossed the first hurdle, but you then find that you encounter problem 2, in which case, review the notes on problem 2.

Good luck. And PLEASE if any of these steps works for you, be so kind to post a reply to let me know – please.

Thanks for the summary, but one important step in troubleshooting flash issues to to try it on another user account. E.g. if it works on your windows guest account, then there is a problem with your user flash player configuration or cache.

Just a reminder note that the following fixes flash if you have a corrupted flash player cache:

I had a lot of problems loading the Colbert videos (essentially problem 1) and had to uninstall Norton recently. I noticed that once I had uninstalled Norton the videos were uploading fine, so I imagine Norton has definately got something to do with it in some sense.

Not sure if this helps but at least hopefully limits the scope of the problem.

I just get a blank screen trying to watch Colbert or Daily, with an error message that says “Error loading player. error:[IOErrorEvent type="ioError" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2 text="Error #2124"]”
I use vista and firefox 3.0.3. I am relatively non-techie so please use simple language if you know how to fix this.

Hm, a bit late but has anyone found an actual solution to this? I use a Mac and TCR/TDS and some other sites like current.com won’t play in either Safari or Firefox. Plugins disabled, tried the “about:config” change – nothing worked so far. In Safari I usually go to Window -> Activity and then open the direct link for a video and that’s almost always working so I have no idea, why it’s not working as an embedded video.

The problem seems to persist no matter which OS people use, Win, Mac OS X or Linux are all affected. This makes no sense.

Thanks to all who made suggestions for fixes. I’m still having problems, the Norton fix didn’t apply to my version of Norton (2007), I made CC, TCR, TDS shows “allowed” content and enabled popups but I still see a white box where the vid should be. This has been going on since August. What is going on at CC? Why don’t they address user concerns? Millions of people have Norton and can’t get their site to work, I don’t get it.

Just so you know, I’ve spoken with people from the CC blogging department numerous times about this issue. I also know that they are watching this thread closely, monitoring the issues reported by the fans.

I think one of the main obsticles that they are having is that they are unable to duplicate the errors in house. I know they’re trying to find ways to track the errors from outside of their offices, but there’s not a lot of concrete steps that can be taken until they can duplicate it or can get more information.

I know that doesn’t help you currently, but hopefully that will ease your mind a bit.

      Hey Vigwig!

I talked to my techie computer software programmer hubby a go-go about it, and he seems to think there may be an issue with the port that CC is using to sort of feed out their videos with, and/or with how your ports are set up on whatever computer you’re using. I sort of zoned out after about 5 minutes of him trying to explain the nitty gritty of it all to me, so if you want details, drop me an e-mail and I’ll see if I can’t make more sense of it for you.

The way it was explained to me is that each video is hosted in one central spot, but is distributed by multiple servers on multiple networks. The video you see depends on your location and the speed of your location. Using this system, no one server gets slammed with requests at one time. It’s pretty elaborate from what I understand.

I have “Problem 1″ – everything loads except the video. Worked fine until this week. Using FF3, WinXP, Zonealarm (played with the settings there and made no difference). Very annoying. I live in NZ – I thought that maybe we had been cut off.

Is anybody actually working on the problem? My problem is flash video fails to start on all Comedy Central’s front pages – all embedded videos inside the sites are OK. (black screen w/please download Adobe flash) I’m using Firefox 3.0.4 on 10Meg cable. No problems on any other sites using flash, nor w/IE 6. But I don’t normally use IE.
