Episode 4110 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)
ByWelcome to a special Friday edition of “R.A.P.S. (Awesome!).” I LOVED every single thing about this episode, especially the fact that Stephen sang twice. Some of the other highlights for me were the Moscow cat circus and the BKAL segment. Did y’all catch the Strangers with Candy reference during BKAL?
Please feel free to share your thoughts about this episode in the comments. You may also wish to add a write-in vote for something not included in the poll.

write in vote– THE WHOLE SHOW!
I cannot decide at all what is the best. first of all I was basking in the glow of John Oliver’s greatness during Obama’s speech when I was blindsided by the awesomeness that was the best #$%&ing news team teasing Anderson Cooper and obviously doing and shouting stranger things.
suddenly Stephen is not giving us a rundown of the show but instead playing the guitar and singing. he hits the nail on the head about Palin in a way I hate to admit, and he has TD on! I remember watching him be a big part of the Broncos beating Brett Favre and the Packers in the Super Bowl back in ‘97, a fond sporting memory for me. then he has an extraordinary interview complete with a song, a whole song, and what atheists scream. subsequently we have a guest who says absurd things about typewriters, makes a hilarious statement about spending time being black, and then gets himself muddled into some beautiful tangled strings of innuendo. the show ends with Stephen fighting off a giant mutant white plastic cup with a giant mutant sweet & low package.
I am supposed to CHOOSE from this??
(Sam Bee was just fabulous as well! too many quotables from that bit!)

I actually thought about making the whole show a poll item but figured we should be forced to pick an answer because America is at war. :-) Seriously, though, it is a difficult decision. I’m so glad it’s a Friday night because I am going to stay up late and watch the TDS and TCR reruns that start at 1 am.

i have to agree with whole show. i almost died when the show starts off with stephen playing the guitar and singing john denver songs … and the BKAL was TOOOOO much.

John Denver would have loved Colbert.
Crazy awesome funny for the entire length of the show. Colbert had a good time, with Ms. Brown especially, and McWhorter had him laughing continuously.
Hopefully Gustav will not slam us again like Katrina did and isolate us from civilization so we can see the shows next week.

Wow, I don’t think I could pick a favorite moment form this show. It might be BKAL, but the main interview came pretty close, along with the fantastic giant angry styrofoam cup. And…singing!!!!!!! He has great pitch.
POLE AND THE HOLE!!!! woot!

“can hip-hop sample something that can save black america?” ooooh so clever!
and i love the “strangers with candy” reference haha “pole and the hole” i always feel so happy when he references his past projects, like the one about the “dribble down effect” which is from wigfield, i’ve heard at least twice… and a few weeks ago he said “see spot dick jane” lol which was from SWC… LOVE IT !!!!

lol I knew that sounded familiar! OMG was that from the illiteracy episode?! I remember it was on the sign outside the school. That episode has to be my favorite.

I could listen to Stephen, Paul and Amy do commentary on films they haven’t been in!
August 30th, 2008 at 9:10 am
The commentaries are almost as good as the shows themselves. I remember in the illiteracy one Stephen pointed out that when they were doing the Helen Keller thing and Jerri spelled pensul, Stephen was so desperate to get the scene right that he was mouthing the wrong letters along with her XD

I love the SWC reference too! And the Judge Tubbs segment a few days ago when they re-aired the interview where “Bramlet Abercrombie” claimed his couch was set on fire (ie Wigfield). I just love it when other things are referenced.
but yes… this was a very difficult decision indeed. And TDS was absolutely amazing too! I love the correspondents either way, but they all really stepped it up a notch this week! John Oliver’s bit had me in stitches and when they were hassling Anderson Cooper- that was gold. Kudos to him for being such a good sport.

Watching Stephen get attacked by a Styrofoam cup and fending it off with a huge Sweet-N-Low packet left me in a crumpled ball on the floor, laughing until it hurt.
And, yes, BIG props to TDS’s DNC finale episode tonight! I love that John Oliver has no fear! (I loved it earlier in the week when he was lying on the floor and said, “Will nobody help me up?” Hahahahaa!)

John Oliver is hilarious!
“My voice is my credential! ‘Ah-loo-min-ee-um’ See? Now let me in!”
heehee.
The first segment was hilarious! I don’t think the audience got the Palin/Pei-Ling joke, but I sure did! I love it when he makes Asian jokes.
Right when I heard “pole and the hole” during BKAD, I rushed here to comment on it, but all of you beat me to it :P Was Brown wearing a WristSTRONG? I couldn’t tell… I think they should start making WristSTRONGs with the letters written in neon colors, that way we can tell the difference between WristSTRONGs and other red bracelets.
The interview was entertaining, with those two, giggling, middle aged men, but the closing segment was even better!
How do you find/make a giant Sweet ‘N Low sugar packet!?

How do you find/make a giant Styrofoam cup costume?
I agree it would be nice if WS bracelets were more distinguishable. Every time I see a red wristband I try to strain and squint my eyes to see what it says. I always get pissed when it says something stupid like “Nike.”

Yes, she was wearing a WristSTRONG bracelet. I don’t remember at the moment which of the blog postings I’ve read over the past week mentioned it, but I know I read that she had a WristSTRONG bracelet and hoped it would be visible in the segment.
I love that she also said this before seeing the segment last night:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

I loved John Oliver’s segment on TDS as well, but it made me a little nostalgic for Stephen at the 2004 DNC. Nevertheless, John Oliver was excellent and I really loved it when he tried kissing the girl and she ran away. I believe Jason Jones actually got a chance to kiss someone. Haha!

So did I (re: reminiscing over Stephen being on the convention floor). My hubby and I totally freaked when that woman gave Jason some sugar! It was kind of a bummer that they didn’t have more time to air some of that really funny stuff we saw at the end, but it was a fantastic week of shows for sure!

Did anyone else notice Samantha Bee’s donkey costume at the end of tonight’s TDS is strikingly similar to the concrete donkey mascot costume used in in Strangers with Candy?

It was closish. The colors were similar but the head looked different.

Yes! Thank you! I thought so as well. Even if it’s not the actual SWC donkey costume, I like to think it is:)

I’m not a big fan of McWhorter, but I thought the interview was real smooth in the back and forth banter. I would of liked to see more of a retort from the Heathen – it seemed like Stephen was doing all the work in that one.
It’s unfortunate Comedy Central didn’t pony up the money to send Stephen to the DNC – he would have been brilliant. He was one of the best parts of the coverage when he was with the DS.
The coverage this week from the DS was pretty good, but it didn’t seem to have as much zing as in the past… Not that it was bad mind you. Maybe people are more weary of the awesome power of the DS reporters, so aren’t as apt to let something stupid slip.
Stephen’s political commentary, between the sarcasm – or maybe because of it – especially when he busts out an over the top The Word, is some of the most poignant in the US media. I kid not.

My favorite part of the show was the SWC reference. Sometimes I miss those, but it was impossible to miss this one. The whole BKAL segment was great. I mean… serenading an atheist with “God Bless America??” Golden. And who else besides Stephen would attempt it?
We got a lot of Singing!Stephen in this episode, and I loved it.
I liked the whole flow of this show– it seemed to get more absurd as it went on, and then lapsed into complete lunacy with the giant styrofoam cup and the giant Sweet ‘n Low packet. Maybe they should do Friday shows more often!

I would definitely have to say that BKAL was my favorite segment. My GOD was that hilarious. I especially loved when Stephen asked what atheists yell during sex. “Oh nothingness!” “Oh, science! Do that again!” ahahah, his face when he said that was hilarious.
Who went to colbertnation and saw the bonus video of BKAL with Stephen asking her about sex with snakes?
Oh, and I noticed on my second viewing, that during BKAL, there was a picture of Stephen doing the friend pose with Ms. Brown. It was on an end table behind Stephen. haha.

Thanks for pointing that out, I would have missed it! It’s especially visible during most of “God Bless America.” I loved that segment so much — I rewatched it immediately after the show was over. Hilarious. What an it-getter.

ditto. “What do atheists yell during sex?” and “Oh nothingness!” are probably the most hilarious lines I’ve heard in a month.

See you in St. Paul…
And for the record – I love the song God Bless America. Even an atheist should be able to sing it and be proud. Its just a word.

omg, i cant vote yet! i need to watch it again and again to try to decide. it is so hard to choose.
I loved the opening with the singing and thought for SURE that that was it, I knew right away how to vote…then, they start talking about palin and TD is on the show, and I attracted a lot of attention from the housemates with how loud i was. loved the telestrater…reminded me of stephen’s part in The Love Guru…and I decided that THIS had to be the best part…but then, i was rolling during BKAL and thought for SURE *that* was it…the fighting heathens, the singing, the what you say in bed, the pole AND the hole…rofl. omg…she was wristSTRONG! omg! so i tell myself, this is where the vote goes…
then, the interview. i thought for sure he was going to be semi-uninteresting…and omg was i wrong. i couldnt stop laughing, as apparently stephen and john couldnt either!
then of course, the ridiculous closing with the giant cup and then the giant packet of sweet n low!! who knew that sweet n low somehow beats Styrofoam?
i guess i’ll just have to watch it over and over again until i can decide!

Oh!! I am so upset that I missed this one. I can’t handle the Tuesday to Friday schedule I am never able to watch TV Friday nights i’m way too busy. I was excited to watch the rerun on Monday because I had the day off but alas it was Thursday’s episode again. I hope I can watch it online but I always seem to have so much trouble with the online videos.
