Episode 4107 – R.A.P.S. (Awesome!)

Hey, Zoners, welcome to our post-show poll and discussion thread. Isn’t it wonderful to have our joy machine back? I thought tonight’s show was excellent. I was, however, concerned for Stephen’s safety when he was standing next to the microwave full of styrofoam cups.

Please feel free to discuss the high points of this episode in the comments. You may also wish to add a write-in vote for something not included in the poll.

I would like to vote for option 6: the voice. Lord help me for liking his sick voice, but oh do I ever.

On a not entirely shallow note, I loved the insistence that he was in Denver.

I vote for option 6 as well for two reasons:

      1. Stephen soldiering on with such a hoarse voice. Although I still enjoyed the show, I was so worried for Stephen the entire time (on top of the microwave incident!). Since he wasn’t feeling so well, I guess it’s just as well he didn’t have the added pressure of being at the DNC.

      2. I admit he has a very, very sexy hoarse voice. Tip of the hat to bowlofpetunias for willing to admit this first! However, I do wish him a speedy recovery as it is difficult to shout at people when you’re in that state:)

  2. Olivia says:

His poor scratchy voice! I bet that’s what he’s going to sound like when he’s seventy.

    • Shruti says:

Have you heard his old man voice? I know he’s done it on the Report before, but I can’t remember when…you can hear it for an extended amount of time (plus singing!) if you listen to TDS’s midterm elections song, though. (I can upload an mp3 if you’d like.)

      • Olivia says:

Oh, no need; I could never forget the Midterm Election song. So just remember this November that your vote will count/A very very very very very small amount!

    • TruthPower says:

I think that is due to all the shouting he does. I knew he was sick at the beginning. Poor Stephen! I loved that green bit the best. I really expected there to be some sort of explosion.

  3. Ducks says:

Stephen addressing his children was hilarious, but it sounded so frightening with that sick voice. It was…surprising.

i was so looking forward to this show! i needed to laugh, especially after such an emotional convention.

  5. smashley says:

great show! loved his voice. I was glued to the tv the whole time. not that this is news, but i kept staring even through the commercials…

loved the bit with the microwave, but wanted to give special mention to the opening and the bit with Shortz. I laughed so hard.

loved the DNC coverage and the “i’m in Denver, really” I kept hoping he would get out a denver paper…sigh. oh, how i missed this and cannot wait to d/l it.

woohoo for the joy machine being back!!

  6. tiger says:

    voice!
I was like omg who is this strange man shouting at me. I couldnt take the character from what sounded like a dude going through a puberty on the way to being a super-bass.

  7. toothpick_pocket says:

“GOOOO TOOO SLEEEP!!” Favorite part, perhaps for this week. Especially when he tells them goodnight right at the end! Oh, Stephen. I know that (indeed the whole show) was murder on your throat, but I love it when you do the daddy!stuff :)

  8. Canada4Colbert says:

That was so wierd. Without his strong voice I felt like I was just being asked to politely forget the facts… I need to be yelled at!!

I really enjoyed the White House call though.

    • prazzledazzle says:

I couldn’t believe he actually called the White House! It’ll be a mystery of what was going on in McClellans head as that happened…

I vote for Stephen Colbert as 2008′s Ballsiest American!

      • TruthPower says:

At first I tried changing the channel when I heard his voice. I too thought something was wrong with my TV. Noting changed though. His voice was rather cute though.

He should have waited until 3am to call the White House. that was great too. Give them a real 3 am call. Balliest American!

I did notice a possible character break during the green part. That styrofoam cup appeared in my dream last night. In the dream, my Mom put one in the microwave and apparently the fumes had some sort of psychedelic power.

      • TruthPower says:

Might be a repost here. Maybe he should have made that 3 am call. He seemed to be better today. I wonder if they really did let the cups melt overnight. Or maybe it was a joke? Goodnight Colbert Nation Kids! Time to sleep.

  9. Lucy says:

For the first few seconds, I thought there was something wrong with the sound on my TV. Poor Stephen– I hope he gets better soon.

But I loved all the character breaks he did tonight– particularly in the McClellan interview and in the Greening segment. I wonder if he was in a really good mood or just goofy on cold medication… :)

  10. Laaaura says:

The voice. Right from the opening I was like, “aww, is he sick!?” His hoarse voice soundedpretty cute actually.

And the part where he turned to the camera and said goodnight to his children was absolutely hilarious. I’d say that was my favorite part.

  11. Nukaleu says:

I liked the voice, and I think he did a pretty good job delivering the jokes, because I think it posed him a bit of a problem. But I agree with tiger…it was hard to find the character beneath the new voice.

The micowave scared me, kind of like the mouse trap on the desk did XD Just him standing that close and then inhaling the fumes made me nervous, but in a giggly way =) I love when he does dangerous things. He seems to like the adrenaline.

  12. Kinaesthesia says:

Maybe it was the week off, but I thoroughly enjoyed both shows last night – everyone seemed really pumped up on the Daily Show, and Stephen was probably high on cold medicine.

  13. Ms Interpreted says:

Enjoyed several bits of the show, but who’d ever have thought an interview with Scott McClellan would top my list of “favorite segments”? I loved loved loved Stephen’s WHCD references; they *really* made me smile (and how I wish Helen Thomas had actually been there!). And the expressions on both Stephen’s and McClellan’s faces during that whole sequence with him calling the White House had me absolutely cracking up.

    Delicious!

    • I loved loved loved that Stephen actually called the White House. I wonder how many calls the White House gets every day, asking to talk to the President?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • ColbertGirl27 says:

Ugh…I don’t think he actually called the White House, did he? I do recall him saying some actual numbers as he dialed, but I thought it was just a gag. I figured Allison Silverman picked up on the other end. Haha. If he really did call the White House, that is just…I don’t know what the right word is!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Ms Interpreted says:

It didn’t sound like Allison. Stephen said he was dialing (202) 456-1414, which is in fact the number for the White House switchboard. It could have been faked (though I don’t see why they would fake it; IMO, the humor lay in the notion that Stephen Colbert and Scott McClellan would call the switchboard), but it sounded real to me.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • ColbertGirl27 says:

Apologies to MsI and justine marie for doubting! That’s great that he really called the White House! Now, how does one get the job of master switchboard operator of the White House. Hmmm…

    • Lisa says:

I loved the phone call to the White House too! It reminded me that the Atone Phone should be making it’s reappearance soon.

Poor Stephen! I hope he and Jon feel better soon — Jon sounded like he had a little laryngitis last night as well. Seems like some kind of bug is running rampant at Comedy Central.

      • LaColberta says:

Non-family friendly thoughts came to mind when Colbert opened up with his voice after hearing Jon.

  15. You guys have no idea how glad I am to see you were enjoying the sexy, super-hoarse voice too! :D lol I felt kinda guilty for taking pleasure in that when he’s obviously not very well, bless ‘im. But God does he sound good when he’s sick! lol

I did worry about him though when he was next to the microwave! I actually found myself shouting out loud for him to get away! :D

  16. Liz says:

    Poor sick Stephen bunny!

  17. Maria says:

At times, Stephen’s hoarse voice sounded so much like Anderson Cooper.

  18. John says:

I was really taken aback by his voice, I’m amazed they let him do the show. It just shows the commitment Stephen shows to his work. Plus it made it the perfect time to do his goodnight to his kids! LOL!!!
