Guest alert: Will Shortz to make a ‘Colbert Report’ appearance?

This is definitely one of those items belonging in the “unsubstantiated rumor” category for now, but The JimH Crossword Blog is claiming to have heard rumbles about a possible Will Shortz (Editor, New York Times Crossword Puzzle) appearance on The Colbert Report tonight.

Me, I’m just loving the excuse to post these clips of Jon and Stephen having some fun with the NYT crossword.

P.S. Did anyone else watch Wordplay when it came out? Props to Stephen on being the “King of Crossword Puzzles” and all, but … dude, Jon does his crosswords with a Sharpie!

I saw Wordplay and loved it. I’m always ecstatic when I can finish the NY Times crossword puzzle. The one last Wednesday about kicked my butt, but I eventually did it.

Ms. I, I forgot about that first clip. I thought you were going to post the one where Stephen’s name is across the top of the puzzle. Then he says, “I have arrived.” Too cute. I’ll see if I can find it.

I think the clip you’re thinking of might have been from the beginning of the “Singin’ in Korean” segment. I quite love that one, too, but these seemed more directly on point for the story.

Thanks, Ms. I! It seemed like I’d seen that little clip a lot. That would be why, since it’s in SiK.

I’ve seen Wordplay and I love Will Shortz! I always love it when people make a career out of something that they love to do. Will Shortz strikes me as a very down-to-earth, humble guy but at the same time someone who would have a great wit and way with words just like Stephen! I want to see their word play!

Has anyone else noticed that the picture of Stephen on the crossword blog seems to be the most frequently used image in the press? It seems a little outdated, but there’s no such thing as a bad picture of Stephen:)

I missed Colbert all week so didn’t know about this till Will mentioned it on NPR this morning on his regular Sunday piece. Apparently Tuesday was his birthday as well.

    Wordplay is excellent!
