Friday Free-for-all: Gentle News edition

By DB on August 15th, 2008 ·

Gentle News

Hello, and welcome to the Gentle News edition of Friday Free-for-all. Please pick up a puppy or sweet kitten and cuddle if it makes you feel happy. Puppy dogs and ice cream are always good.

In a cloud of rainbows and butterflies, the minions realized that some of the pictures on the site were missing. A rather large marshmallow cloud of them. But as we sing with the snow fairies, we’ll continue to replace the pictures as we have time.

Also, the minions were busy frolicking with the unicorns this week (and kept getting sucked in by Michael Phelps) and didn’t have time to keep up with some of the regular features that we usually do. But be happy and sit at the welcome table one of these days, as we promise that we will continue to keep you informed and full of truth as we play catch-up.

And Care Bears be praised – we are lucky enough to get new Colbert Report episodes in two weeks! And we have a week before then to get caught up on our sleep and bring you all kinds of delicious Colbert goodness and Six Degrees knowledge creme puffs to all who care to partake.

Be happy and thankful today, oh Children of Truthiness! Now, please take the time today to discuss: What are you thankful for today in the Colbert Nation? Be happy, think positive thoughts, and life will be … just swell.

This was very calming to read. I just watched the movie “Defending Your Life,” so it was very similar to the mood that film gives off (3

*smiles, candies, and happy dances*

What am I thankful for? Hmm…I’m very thankful that I got to spend this time at my aunt and uncle’s house this week. It was a new experience and it was nice seeing them more often then I usually do. I’m very thankful for everything about this summer. I did a lot of new things that I was never expecting to do, and every day was fantastic.

What am i thankful for Stephen-wise? Well I’m definitely thankful that being a fan of the show gives me this great feeling of community. I have all these other people who enjoy it the way I do, and I feel like I’m really a part of something special, like even though I don’t know any in person, I’m always surrounded by people I really have a “rapport” with.

That’s my happy talk for the day. =D
Peace and Love!

Is stephen really going to be gone for two weeks? I thought he said it was one. What is he going to be doing? Is it something about the DNC? That is happening soon, right? I need me some new Colbert.

Great Prescott bit.

What am I thankful for Stephen wise? The great sense of community and the rapport we all have here. I read this page every day and feel connected to everyone. I wish I could meet some of you. Also, learn about things through interviews. Plus I get to look at a very adorable face 4 mights a week. He makes me smile every day.

Technically it’s a week and a half, not two weeks, but we’re on Friday, and then all the next week, and then Monday’s new shows.

stephen-wise i’m thankful that the show really respects its audience and often invites the Nation for its participation.
I also appreciate Stephen’s relentless interaction he keeps going with the real world because through that the show is able to point out the absurdities of the country in a profoundly funny way. It keeps me smiling knowing that there isn’t as strict a border between the comedy world and reality as TV often has us believing.

well in RL I’m really thankful that I can go to college. it’s just an opportunity not many people in the world get, and until the last few decades, it wouldn’t really have been a reasonable option for a girl. I’m very excited and I’m going to make the most of it.
in the fan world…well I’m really thankful for this blog, because without it I never would have been able to go to An Evening With TDS and Friends, which I believe was the highlight of my trip to New York. it is an awesome memory on all fronts.

I’m just so glad a show like The Colbert Report exists for me to watch. it is a real asset to the world, or at least my version of it!

AMEN TO COLLEGE! I can’t wait. And yay girl power! Best of luck to you in college!
And on that topic, I’m thankful that Stephen is visiting my college in October!!!
Also, of course, for NFZ and the Colboards for helping me through withdrawl when the show is on vacation. You’re awesome! (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2329/2495708286_b61e59bbae.jpg)

Right now I’m thankful that I was able to stop myself from clicking the “sit at the welcome table” link in the post…

I’m also thankful for Stephen. I’m thankful he exists, and I’m thankful he makes me laugh all the time. He makes me a much happier person.

I am thankful to start my new, real job this week. Even if I just spent three hours looking at disturbing medical maladies. “Hmm… oh, that looks unpleasant… ew… eh, this one’s not that noticeable… omgwhatisthat.” And so I am also thankful for my health.

And I must laugh. My reCAPTCHA is “connect …”

YAY FOR NEW REAL JOBS!!!! What exactly is it that you’ll be doing that you’ll be looking at weird medical stuff?

I’ll be helping to edit medical tests, making sure the formatting is all right, the correct terminology is used, etc.

I’m thankful for this site and can’t wait to read the episode recaps. I will have to watch the Toss again about Denver and St. Paul (Louis) to see if I can catch it all. I love the links within the recaps, even if it’s just to Wikipedia, it helps me to catch things I missed.
Also, in the free for all category, I read an old interview the other day which talked about how they originally did a fake Colbert spinoff on TDS and would show commercials for it. Then they decided to actually create a show. Does anyone know how to find those commercials on TDS site or some other site? I remember that the reason I didn’t watch TCR in the early days is because I didn’t think it was a real show. I’m entirely serious. So, their marketing department exceeded all too well, I guess.

The fake promos can be found at Colbert University right here:

You can see a fake Colbert spinoff of TDS on the “About” section of NFZ. Hope this helps:)

I am thankful for great updates from NFZ so I could be excited when our Reader’s Digest came today. I am also thankful for the Colbert I put on my iPod so I could get through another day of work. And as always, I’m thankful for the attractive vessel through which the truth can flow, otherwise known as Stephen Colbert. :D

Man do I love that attractive vessel!

I have a CafePress store which (atleast at the moment) is mostly dedicated to this vessel.

Check it out. I’ll be adding more stuff to it.

I LOVE the picture as well as your gentle writing DB!

I am thankful for the joy machine that is Stephen Colbert. He is so amazingly talented and he always makes me laugh.

I am thankful that TCR is such a well written, funny, smart show and that the fans are not only encouraged to be active participants but are expected to do so. I also appreciate the folks at TCR for assuming we will be savvy enough to understand the material. They always seem to do the exact right amount of set-up for each joke.

I am thankful for NFZ and my fellow Zoners. Like other commenters have said, there really is a strong feeling of community here. We are a funny, smart, respectful group of people. In real life, I tend to be shy but I’m definitely not shy here. Thank you to everyone for your part in making this such a shiny, happy place.

The last few months were stressful for me due to family obligations, an insanely busy time at work (I’m still putting in extra hours to catch-up), being away from home for three weeks without a reliable Internet connection, and being ill for several weeks. During this time, TCR, Stephen, and NFZ kept me going. Now that’s something to be grateful for!

Yay! It’s an NFZ edition of Thanksgiving:)

I am thankful for my job, my family, my friends and my health. I’ve got to say I’m especially thankful for my parents who never forced me onto a particular career path but allowed me to just follow what interested me. I’m still searching, but it’s better than to be pegged into a particular career. I second tiger’s comment about college.

As many have said before, this community means so much to me. I’ve never been part of, or thought much of, online communities, but this is something special. I love you guys so much and I hope we eventually could all meet some point…maybe in NYC. Like Jenny with a Y, I tend to be shy, but this place brings me out of my shell. DB, thank you again for this site. You are making a difference in people’s lives!

Also just grateful for Stephen for helping me to look at politics, religion and life in general in a new light. I’m not usually influenced by celebrities, but he’s an exception. Actually, he’s above the word “celebrity.”

In life, I’m thankful for my family and my school.
Without them, I don’t even know how I’d manage to get to college.
In CN, I’m thankful for NFZ! Without you guys, how would I know to pick up an issue of Readers Digest mag? Or when to catch rare cameos that Stephen has done?
Plus, you guys are the only people that I can talk to/that understands my fangirldom.
Plus, I’m thankful for Stephen the Man. His show really made me mature in less than a month. Now, I can proudly say, I am an American who actually knows what’s going on.
Much love to the fam, my school, Stephen, and all of you guys at NFZ :)

I’m thankful to be a member of the Colbert Nation, period. I think I’m also very thankful to be a Zoner and to have been given the opportunity to contribute to the online fandom in some way. I’ve met some wonderful, thoughtful, intelligent, and kind folks here, and I’m thankful everyday for all of them. I don’t know that there any other group of fans who are as loyal as we are, and I’m very proud to be a part of it.

On a side note, I’m now thankful for all the Cantons in the U.S., as I’m sure they’ll continue to serve as the butt of many jokes for weeks to come! Hehehehe…

There was an article that I found (and blogged about) that said that he had been scheduled, but when I went to go verify it, the author said it was someone that the venue had “proposed be invited” or something. Never confirmed. So, as of now, I’m under the assumption that he’s not going to Denver in any capacity.

I couldn’t resist posting this!
Down the block from my house, there was a big graffitti’d van that had “JERRY BLANK” sprayed on one of it’s panels. Even though it’s with an “I” and not a “Y”, it was still good enough for me.
Here’s some pics I took:

woah now that’s awesome!
haha if I saw that I would probably laugh for an entire week.

I have to say I live with another SWC fan and we have WAY too much fun relating everything in life to the appropriate SWC quote.

Haha, I was so excited! I ran all the way back up my very steep hill just to get my camera. That van is still parked there today.

Did anyone know that there is a Harvey Birdman video game for the Wii? I just saw this review for it from one of my subscriptions.

I love the link to that story of the guy who saw Ed Helms in the bathroom. haha. What a funny encounter.

On topic though, I am happy for this blog. I check this site a ridiculous amount of times throughout the day. I love how quick the Colbert Nation (and this site inparticular) is when it comes to being up-to-date with Colbert-related news. It makes me happy.

Also, I have been completely obsessed with the Olympics. Completely. I come home from work and sit around for the rest of the day watching them. Yay for Michael Phelps’ 8th gold medal!!
