Colbert’s ‘Report’ pursues rapport
Election-year antics could tip kudo case

Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” has rather quietly put together one of the more notable dynasties in Emmy history, winning the variety, music or comedy series category the past five years.

Yet another “Daily Show” win in this category — which has assumed a seemingly greater vitality in recent years as comedic juice in the sitcom realm has waned — would tie the show with fellow nominee “Late Show With David Letterman,” which has won the category six times and had its own five-year winning streak 1998-2002.

While the “Daily Show” brand of news and political satire should sustain its relevance to voters during this election year, the brethren skein that Stewart & Co. lead into each weeknight, “The Colbert Report,” has created plenty of buzz itself in recent years. Stephen Colbert produced the biggest laughs at the 2006 kudocast when he appeared in vintage alter ego form alongside Stewart and comically bemoaned his show’s runner-up status moments earlier in the variety, music or comedy program category. “I lost to Barry Manilow!” Colbert wailed. “I lost to the Copacabana!”

I’ve visited nofactzone since its inception, but never left a comment due to my being technologically challenged. Anyways, as I was reading this Variety article that y’all linked I had to comment. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the author of this article, Daniel Frankel, is my cousin!!! I knew he was a writer for Variety but I never took much interest. Now that he’s written an article in praise of Senior Colbert, I have to call him and give him my ultimate praise of approval. Screw serious journalism! Give me more articles full of Colbert-love! Right on Cousin!!!!!

Are you or Daniel any relation to Robert “Bobby” Frankel?

*fingers crossed* Here’s hoping they finally get the recognition they deserve…although, I think the Peabody has already successfully achieved that.

Every time I hear something about Stephen and the Emmy’s, the only thing I hear in my head is, “Good evening godless sodomites.” Hahahha!

you stopped the text right before this interesting…debatable, statement: “Jokes aside, there seems to be a growing consensus that Colbert should get a trophy, especially as his national relevance as a satirist has challenged — or perhaps even outpaced — that of Stewart.”

consensus among who? plus, no offense to Stephen (cuz duh I think he’s awesome) but I think Jon’s award show-hosting history automatically makes him kind of more nationally known and important.

Consensus among many critics from the reviews I’ve read. I’m assuming that, anyway. I do think that Jon’s show is more nationally known, but “more” important? I think that’s kind of subjective. Personally, it seems to me that many of the reviews and analysis of comparing the two shows have emphasized the point that TCR is in fact at least as influential as TDS, and TCR is no longer a little brother spin-of of TDS, but in fact an equal peer to the show.

I think the point the Variety article is making is that while many television critics feel like “The Daily Show” has struggled in the past years with the changing correspondents and Jon’s style seeming to change a bit, that Stephen and TCR have really shown positive upward progress in the development of the show. It’s this upward momentum that gives TCR a very good chance of winning the Emmy this year.

However, Emmy tends to trend with repeat wins over new celebrants, which is what gives Jon a slight advantage in any Emmy race.

ah, interesting. the Emmys have only recently entered my radar, so I didn’t know that many people were buzzing about TCR. I do think that TCR is no longer perceived as a spin-off because it can be referenced in the media without needing to mention TDS to give perspective.

I didn’t know TDS was having any troubles either, but I don’t follow it as closely as TCR, and I definitely know less about its history.

I do look forward to seeing how it turns out though…the Emmys will be a time I’m glad I bothered to get a TV!

I agree with tiger. Stephen is certainly loved and lauded by his fans but nationally, I would say Jon is more relevant or recognized. Not that I mind. With Stephen, I feel like I have a special treat that very few other people are allowed to enjoy.

I’d be happy with the idea that Jon may continue to win best series, but at the very least, Stephen should DEFINITELY win individual performance! After all, that’s the category he keeps comically losing to every year ;)
