What do we call our Smokin’ Poll?

Ok, so the poll we created after last night’s episode seemed to be a huge hit. Well, at least enough of a hit that we seem to be happy with it. So we’re going to try doing it every night, immediately after the show. That way we have a place to go and chat after the adrenalin high of the show. Plus, if you’re not feeling chatty, you can just weight in on the poll as to how you felt about the night’s segments.

But we can’t think of what to call it! Here’s the three best options we have thought of. See the below videos to see where these segment names come from. And thanks to Jenny with a Y for volunteering to be our Poll Dancer for this new site feature!

Stephen R.A.P.S.

Tip/Wag

Shout-Out

I think I’d vote for “Stephen R.A.P.S.” It’s appropriately Stephen-centric, but it’s not something we see too often. I think “Tip/Wag” is a frequent enough feature on the show that we shouldn’t try to appropriate the name, and “Shout Out” is so very one-of-a-kind that I can’t imagine applying it here.

They’re all good; this is just my two cents.

I love, love, love the Shout Out. Cracks me up every time.

I’m with jentaps. We do kinda do that when we talk about the show. And the fact that the “Hey!” soundbite always makes Stephen smile makes me smile too. : ) It’s all part of The Joy Machine. LOVE the poll idea! Props to the great idea and to Jenny with a Y for heading it up!

The first time I looked at it, I missed the joke in “Smokin’ Poll”. The second time, when I got it, I almost fell off my chair laughing.

I think you should call the Smokin’ Poll, a Smokin’ Poll!! And only It-getters will get it.

I agree w/ it being Smokin’ Poll!

I am with babybert and Fleur, I think “Smokin’ Poll” is great…

  7. Ms Interpreted says:

I always associate “Smokin’ Poll” with the segment Dave Gorman used to do on The Daily Show, myself …

  8. Ann G. says:

I like “Smokin’ Poll” too. That makes it pretty self-explanatory, whereas the other choices don’t really shout “it’s a poll, dude.”

  9. Nukaleu says:

I agree it should be “Smokin’ Poll.” It is a phrase that, as babybert said, only it-getters would understand. I consider R.A.P.ing something we do here all the time, rather than just in this. “Shout Out” is a great segment, but it doesn’t make me think of a poll at all, and it’s not a unique phrase to the Nation. And I agree that Tip/Wag is too commonly used on the show. Plus, we’re not really Tip/Wagging…we’re just Tipping.

So “Smokin’ Poll” gets my vote.

      I really hope you meant “R.A.P.ping” and not “R.A.P.ing” there … :P

But the thing is, it’s not just for the poll. Unless I misunderstand it, the poll will be going up immediately after the shows air not only to allow people to choose their favorite segments, but also to let them start chatting about the episode even if the guide hasn’t yet been posted (which will often be the case).

That’s why I’d want it to be a name that isn’t just about the poll aspect. (That, and, as I mentioned upthread, I think of “Smokin’ Poll” as a Daily Show segment, not a Colbert Report one.)

    • babybert says:

Isn’t “Smokin’ Pole” the TCR segment about global warming and the race to make money in the Arctic?

I thought Smokin’ Poll was a play on that.

I can’t say I remember a TDS “Smokin’ Poll” segment.

      • Ms Interpreted says:

“Smokin’ Pole” is the global warming segment, yes. I double-checked, and I remembered the Daily Show segment incorrectly; it was actually “Poll Smoking” with Dave Gorman. But since that one was on polls … [shrugs]

I guess I’d just rather not see something that gets used in a recurring manner on TCR co-opted by us without a good reason, and since we have options here, I’d rather we either stuck with the one used most infrequently (the R.A.P.S. segment) or went with something totally different.

This discussion has been interesting and a lot of good points have been made. I still haven’t cast a vote yet because I cannot decide which title I prefer.

I just had an idea that I wanted to share. What if we used “Shout-Out (*Hey!*)” or “R.A.P.S.” as main title of each post and used “Smokin’ Poll” as the title of the actual poll itself? Last night I used a line from the episode as the title of the poll because I liked it and it seemed to fit given the fact that I actually did have some technical difficulties but I would be fine using “Smokin’ Poll” if that is what people like.

If y’all don’t like this idea, it won’t hurt my feelings but I wanted to throw it out there.

  12. DB says:

Um … I’d rather not go with “Smokin’ Poll” as the title seeing as how it’s a euphemism for something quite naughty. And we are a family friendly blog. A post title is one thing – a frequent feature on the site, quite another.

I’m pretty much leaning towards R.A.P.S. for the reasons that MsInterpreted stated, even though it’s not the one winning the most votes. But I’ve still got a few hours to decide. :)

  13. Ann G. says:

Does it really need to be called something? I like the way Jenny with a Y used a line from the show for hers.

I vote for total anarchy and not giving it a name!

Or… you could just do what you want, and it’ll be fine. :-D
