Klassic Kolbert: Should Medical Marijuana be Legalized?

I was reading the headlines on CNN a moment ago, and I saw that Rep. Barney Frank (who once called his installment of BKAD “a waste of TV space”) has proposed ending federal penalties for the responsible use of less than 100 grams of marijuana. Wow! Done correctly, that could mark a huge shift in this country’s drug policy and, in my opinion, it is overdue for serious debate.

For some decidedly un-serious debate on the narrower issue of medical marijuana, I’d like to mark the announcement of this proposal with this vintage segment of The Daily Show:

Even Stevphen – Should Medical Marijuana be Legalized? Just because Steve Carell supports medical marijuana doesn’t mean he’s a dope fiend.

Ha-Ha-Ha…whoever wrote that script did a great job. Great comedy Steve’s. It shows just how ridiculous our marijuana laws are today. Keep up the good fight. Someday I will be able to use Medical Marijuana be it Chronic, Orange Kush, Sugar Kush or Skunk to control my chronic nausea and vomiting due to Diabetic Neuropathic Gastroparesis. Guess how I acquired this disease? My doctors got me addicted to heavy opiates like Methadone and Dilaudid, which was legally prescribed, imagine what our gov’t would say if marijuana was addictive like opiates or causes irreversable side effects. But it has none of these qualities. I am reminded of this, “Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the most theraputically active substances known. For the DEA to continue to stand between those suffere’s and the substance is arbitrary, unreasonable and capricious.” Francis L. Young-DEA Chief Administrative Law Judge, 1989. Plus there is no safe drug one can use daily to control chronic nausea and vomiting EXCEPT for Medical Marijuana, Marinol, which I have a prescription for, doesn’t even compare to the effeicient and effectiveness of Medical Marijuana. The most commonly prescribed drug is Regalen/Metroclopramide which if used daily (which is what I need) causes irreversible Parkinson like shakes and tremors. The gov’t doesn’t care if I’m a legal junkie, but God forbid if Medical Marijuana increases my quality of life and reduces my need for opiate pain killers. Get it together Capitol Hill.
