Top Ten Things We Like To See Stephen Colbert Eat
By
Stephen Colbert has a few threads of consistency throughout all of his career, and one is his ability to turn eating into a hilarious sight gag. Here’s some of our favorite culinary Colbert moments. If we missed one of your favorites, let us know in the comments!
Lots of tasty goodness after the cut!
10. Fried foods
Stephen teaches a very valuable lesson in this clip: You can’t unfry things!
9. Lo Mein
To “make things fun”, Stephen decides to have a little snack during his opening. Which includes one of my favorite instance of the F-bomb ever.
8. Dreamsicle
Every time I watch this, I think, how is he not getting a brain freeze before he does? The man must have a brain of steel or something.
7. Bobby
This particular food brought the Colbert Report to the darkest humor we’ve seen yet. And the story arc of Stephen yearning to eat his stage manager was one of the most amusing and wonderful tributes to a departing staff member that I’ve ever seen on a television show.
6. Sausage
This Better Know a District features the classic line, “Would you care to hold my sausage?” And although it is not food related, I also love the first part of this video, which has a really cute bit featuring Monsieur Renault.
5. Americone Dream
All of the Catholic readers were so proud of Stephen for keeping his promise not to eat sweets during Lent. Can you imagine – launching your *own* friggin’ ice cream flavor, and not being able to eat it for months? But in this clip, Lent is over, and Stephen indulges like crazy.
4. Hot and Spicy Pork Rinds and Marshmallow Fluff
In trying to prove Tucker Carlson right by showing that poor people are obese because of overeating, he pulls out $3 worth of food – Hot and Spicy Pork Rinds, a Slim Jim and marshmallow fluff. Then, when he dips the marshmallow fluff in the pork rinds, we all lost our collective appetite. *shudder* What a great way to push your limits for a joke.
3. Donuts
Donut mathmatics always makes me smile. And the “Prize Please!” is just … well, adorable.
2. Pizza
He’s had two amazing (and very similarly themed) pizza bits, one at The Colbert Report, one at The Daily Show. Since I couldn’t decide between the two of them, I decided to feature them both.
1. Bananas
This clip is a classic for a reason. It’s not just funny because of Stephen being amazingly inappropriate with a banana. It definitely pushes Jon and Stephen to the edge of silliness.
Honorable Mention
Starbucks
Now, I know this is a drink and not a food, which is why it came up on the list as Honorable Mention. But Stephen’s well-documented addiction to Starbucks is one of the more memorable running themes of the show.

This has kicked my day off to a fabulous start! I was so glad to see the sausage on here. That was one of my favorite BKAD’s. And the donut segment still leaves my gut busted. I still don’t understand exactly how a rabbit is a sphere, though. Yeah, I know, they “don’t have a hole,” but still…
I’d also like to give my honorable mention to Egg Nog. “Mmmm…There’s is nothing more refreshing than egg nog…I put in everything: coffee, cereal, soup…delicious!”

Aww, no Doritos? I loved watching that very mixed look on his face while he chowed down on the Spicy Sweet ones — and who can forget the award made out of a Dorito too? Good times…

Yeah. It looked like he had never had any. “It’s like a caucus in my mouth”. Good line. I considered using that awhile ago. Didn’t though.

I could watch every one of these videos over and over. They are all so good.
One of my all-time favorites is the brownie eating scene in the “Ask Jerri” Episode of SWC. It love the way Stephen put the entire brownie in his mouth at one time and had chocolate stuck to his teeth.
Last week, I stumbled across a TCR video I hadn’t seen before. In this clip, Stephen tries to eat a buillion cube (his pet goldfish anthrax makes an appearance too): http://www.comedycentral.com/colbertreport/videos.jhtml?videoId=72801.

I totally wanted to use the Brownie video, but alas, it was nowhere to be found.

I love that “Ask Jerri” episode! I even made a screenshot comic out of it.

That just shows how much time I have on my hands.
I think the “grit-off” should be included, too: http://www.comedycentral.com/colbertreport/videos.jhtml?videoId=127665

Good screencaps! Thank you for sharing them.
I love the grit-off video. It has one of the funniest character breaks ever.
July 27th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
You’re welcome :)
And about the grit-off: I know! Stephen + profanity = love.
July 28th, 2008 at 12:58 am
Nice character break in the grit off. We knew it was coming.
July 28th, 2008 at 12:49 am
I knew he would set off that muse trap in the grit off. I think we could all see that coming. I’m not a big fan of f bombs, but this break was great. Thanks for the laugh prazzledazzle.

No problemo!
I never get tired of watching that clip. It’s one of my favorites.

I’d never seen that one either. Thanks!

Ha, I was there when he ate Bobby. Before the show started, we’d been told they were planning something a little special, and before the cameras rolled, I saw Eric on stage and I may have squeed a little… :)

Oh hey, so was I. I think I may have even sat near you (if you were the person I think you were at the front of the line). Sadly, when I saw Eric on stage, I didn’t squee, because I didn’t realize who it was at first. Yes, I’m completely hopeless.
I was also in the audience for #4, the spicy pork rinds and Marshmallow Fluff. I may have said “EW” rather loudly when Stephen ate that stuff.

Were you the woman 4th in line? Dark shorty curly hair? I think possibly wearing a Colbert Nation shirt…?
Yes, I was the embarrassingly giddy Brit at the front…
Reply
July 27th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
It was a “Colbert ‘08″ shirt and I was actually having a bad hair day from hell, but yeah, that sounds like me. I was #6 in line, but 4 back from you, I guess. I didn’t think you were giddy, just… excited to be there. Which I would expect from every true it-getter. ;-)

“-bleep- YOU, OLD MAN.”
It never fails me. :p

LoL I think there are too many Doritos clips and it’s hard enough to pick clips for lists as it is! And they’re used more as a sponsor than a “food Stephen particularly eats” so I guess this list gets a pass. Why not another honorable mention? The one where he mentions “orange waste” is a good start. :D

That’s the taping I was at.
When he ripped open the bag of Doritos, I kid you not, they were EVERYWHERE. They had stage hands sweeping it up during the ‘commercial break’.

With the Starbucks clip I thought you were going to go with the day they closed all the Starbucks and he showered with it. That was great.
Thanks for the fun countdown, and have a successful and smooth moving weekend, DB!

YEAH that was what I hoped to see as well.
that was such a nice #1 threat to America.
I remember sitting in my family room…and because I usually watch in my living room this stands out to me…and I was like FREAKING OUT watching that. SO hilarious.

Off-topic, but I was listening to NPR on the way to work today (yes, I work almost every Saturday. Ugh!), and they were doing some piece on the presidential campaigns, and McCain used the phrase “the audacity of hopelessness” to describe Obama’s position on the Iraq war. Creative license, anyone?
On-topic: “F— you, old man!” gets me every time. On a related note, I wonder why Dennis Miller hasn’t appeared on TCR yet. I guess he doesn’t want to get nailed…

Dennis Miller would a be a great guest. Though not a big fan, I will admit he has a great way with words. Dennis and Stephen should have some sort of “word-off.” I’m thinking of the segment that Stephen did with Sean Penn. Oh, metaphor-off!

Don’t speak for everyone; I personally love funyuns in marshmallow fluff, so who’s to say the pork rinds were horrible? ;P

What about meteors? Sure, you debbie-downers may say he doesn’t actually EAT meteors, but he is willing to put his tongue on them, and that’s close enough for government work. =)

I also liked it when he licked the ice in the Water is Life museum segment.

One of my favorite Stephen segments from TDS is “C is for Chubby”. It’s very funny to watch him take such big bites from those cookies so I wanted to give it an honorable mention: http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=128826&title=c-is-for-chubby.

I don’t have time to find the clip right now but it was probably about 4-5 months ago when he was talking about trying to warm up to McCain and he pulled out some ice cream and started eating it and talking like a single woman in her late 30s/early 40s who’s “settling”. It was hilarious!

It was The Word segment “Mr. Right Now” from March 11th:
http://www.comedycentral.com/colbertreport/videos.jhtml?videoId=163797
And I agree: it was hilarious! I loved how Stephen said rather than vote for McCain, he was going to write in the Green Lantern for president. :)
It’s also making me hungry… *goes to the kitchen for ice cream and whiskey*

I know this was an old post, but I have to comment!
Right now, my cousins are watching “All Star Alphabet” (y’know, the one where Stephen’s dressed up in that blue Z suit?) and this one scene inspired me to go back to this post. Stephen was sitting at a table with another boy and was drinking a Hi-C juice box. I know it was a drink, but still! Stephen in a blue Z costume drinking a juice box with a super long straw is priceless :)
