Friday Free-for-all

Stephen Colbert

Okay, kids, you’ve heard me talk about Loftgasm for weeks. This weekend is the big move, and my internet is getting turned off at the old place on Saturday, and turned on at the new place on Saturday. Here’s the problem – we don’t officially move until Monday. So that means two days essentially of no Internet. I’ll have my iPhone, but that’s about it. So please, kids, play nice.

It will also be a very slow few days for posts until I get the move complete and we’re over there 100%. I’ve got a couple of posts plugged up for this weekend, so it won’t be totally dead.

And while the Free-for-all is always open for any topic, here’s my conversation starter question:

What do you think happened to #5 and #1 during the Threatdown on Thursday?

Comments

  1. AnnaT says:

#1 and #5 on the threatdown was exactly what i was wondering about!

maybe we should already know that #1 is bears and they left that out because we should have figured it out already …

and maybe the number “5″ is a national security secret … valerie plame … can’t say it on tv?

i dunno … i have tivo so i rewound because i thought i missed something. glad to know i didn’t

  2. bowlofpetunias says:

I figured at first that they edited out threat #5 for some reason, then #1 was absent and I just got confuzzled. I mean, Stephen even said “and finally” as he moved on to threat #2, so it’s not like #1 was edited out later too. It had to have been deliberate.

I fully expect another mini-threatdown on Monday. Nay, *demand!* If only for the accompanying graphic.

    • Jenny says:

Nope, I was at Thursday’s taping, and #5 and #1 were missing – nothing got edited out. It was very strange – I even mentioned it to my friend during the commercial break. Hopefully Monday will be another Starbucks-esque #1 Threat!

  3. wildlymissingthemark says:

ok, this is waay off topic, but i was reading an article about philly in this in-flight magazine, and it showed a pic of the guy who played Ben Franklin during TCR’s week there.
well, apparently he got married this summer-to a betsy ross impersonator.
there is someone for everyone in this world!
sorry, just found it mildly amusing.

    • DB says:

You know the policy – you can say anything you want, but for God’s sake, don’t say you’re sorry! If I didn’t want you to comment, I wouldn’t give you a venue. And if I don’t like you’re comment, I’ll edit it or delete it.

You are doing just fine, that’s all I’m saying. Smile! :)

  5. Argon says:

The stange part is that my cable went out for that part and when it came back on I thought I had missed #5

Maybe it’s a conspiracy and they censored it out because it was something bad about Media Moguls.

Stephen has gotten on Sumner Redstone’s bad side often enough maybe he finally took some steps?

I figured it was understood that #1 was Bears so *wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more, say no more!*

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Argon says:

I had another thought, maybe #5 and #1 were only for people that had the Colbert Secret Decoder Ring and that denial at the end was just to keep everyone else but the Platinum Members from trying to get one.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Jenny with a Y says:

        Hahaha! That’s probably what happened.

I kept waiting for him to mention them later in the show. I wonder if something is being set up for next week.

  6. prazzledazzle says:

Maybe he’s so hungover from Wednesday’s Starbucks segment that he forgot to include it… or he could just be saving it for Monday’s episode.
I was confused for a bit, too.
LOL! Since it’s a free-for-all, I think it would be appropiate to bring this up: The commercial for Step Brothers was just on and it was the one with Rob Riggle in it :D He was doing his “POW-POW” bit. Heehee, that always makes me laugh.
    Happy Friday, everyone!

  8. Jenny with a Y says:

I heard something on the radio this morning that I thought would make a good Difference Maker segment on TCR. Apparently there is a match.com type of web site for people who wish to cheat on their spouses. People actually pay money to find other married individuals who want to hook up with someone. I don’t understand how the Web master justifies making money this way. If it were me, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.

DB, good luck with the move!

    • wildlymissingthemark says:

that’s despicable. as if things weren’t tough for marriages already! i am sure TCR could do something with that though.

I was wondering myself what happened to threat #5 and #1 last night. It did look to me like #5 was edited out. I’m assuming a mini-threatdown will happen next week. Or maybe they just want to keep us guessing. Those sly TCR peoples, they know we need something to keep us busy this weekend!

So on another topic: Is everyone else still totally gaga over Dr. Horrible? I’ve been listening to the songs virtually nonstop when I’m on the computer. I so can’t WAIT for the DVD to come out and the official soundtrack.

What are some of your favorite lines? Here are a couple of mine:

    “… I meant Ghandi.”
“At my most bad ass, I make people want to take a shower.”
“I wonder what you’re captain of?”
“This is his dry cleaning bill – FOUR SWEATER VESTS!”

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • AmandaIvy says:

I just watched Dr. Horrible for the first time (twice) yesterday and the songs have been stuck in my head since then!

      Personally i love:

“You’re kidding! What a crazy random happenstance!”

“It’s curtains for you. Lacey, gently wafting curtains.”

“Oh my god, look at my wrist. I have to go.”

(as juvenile as it is, the delivery made me laugh:)
      “The Hammer is my penis.”

and of course it bears repeating,

“I want to be an achiever. Like Bad horse.”
      “The thoroughbred of sin?”
      “…. I meant Ghandi.”

      /flailtastic gushing over Dr. Horrible.

      • Laaaura says:

I am also still ridiculously obsessed with Dr Horrible. I love all the songs so much!

As mentioned above, these two lines are my absolute favorites lol:

“You’re kidding! What a crazy random happenstance!”

“Oh my god, look at my wrist. I have to go.”

I’m a bad fangirl. I haven’t been watching the show all that closely the past two weeks because I’ve been distracted by The Dark Knight.

    It’s so good, people. SO GOOD. ;_;

    • Lauren says:

i’ve been distracted by the dark knight too, haha.
      i’ve seen it 5 times.
      with 5 groups of people.
and two-face still creeps me out haha.

      • Gaia Faye says:

I’ve only gone three times. I must try harder!

Each time the audience is less and less into it, sadly. Of course, the first time I saw it was an advanced screening with all the hardcore batfans. No other audience can beat that energy. It was amaaaaazing~

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Lauren says:

          i know.
every time i go, there’s less and less people that actually really pay attention to the movie.
my friends were making fun of batman’s low voice at the last one i went to. And then they showed a preview for the dark knight, before the dark knight started, and everyone was like “once this lame movie is over, let’s all go see that one!”

    • Ms Interpreted says:

Geez, I have yet to see it! Some of my nephews are going to re-evaluate my position as “cool aunt” if I don’t go soon (they caught an IMAX viewing on opening day). In my defense, I’ve been swamped lately at work and am trying to organize my life before I move in a couple of weeks …

      • Gaia Faye says:

Psh! Real life? What kind of an excuse is that?! ;)

Seriously, though, it might be better to wait anyway if you don’t like crowds. The fervor when it opened was just a tad nuts.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Ms Interpreted says:

Heh, that’s kind of my hope, that some of the crowds will have thinned by the time I go to see it. Mainly, though, it’s the working 10-12 hour days and trying to pack up my apartment that has been soaking up all of my time. :)

It’s marvelous in IMAX, especially the chase through the city streets. If you get the chance, go for it!

I saw it a few days ago, and I’m going again tonight!

I was already a Batman fangirl, and Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker completely blew me away. I’m still perplexed as to how one man could contain that much awesome and the ability to scare the crap out of me and make me giggle.

I know, right? The end of the hospital sequence is an especially good example of getting the audience to bust up laughing and then suddenly remind them O WAIT, this isn’t so funny. D:

        • AmandaIvy says:

Yes! I loved the hospital sequence. His unbridled joy at *SPOILER ALERT* blowing up the hospital was somehow sickeningly adorable and then you’re like “Wait a second. He just did a horrible thing! What is this emotional confusion?!”

My vote is for last-minute editing of the Threatdown for reasons of un-funniness or otherwise non-workability of comedy function-ness.

I noticed that the credits were unusually long and complete, which indicates a shortened show. I will now un-nerd and return to the world of importantness.

Hi NFZers, although I read this wonderful site every day and *worship* Stephen, this is my first posting! I have found myself in a dire situation and thought to call on my fellow Colbert fans for some help. I live in AZ and will be making a trek up to NYC in September to accompany a friend on a trip, and the ONLY thing I want to do while I’m there is go to a taping of TCR of course! I know there aren’t any tickets available on the website, but I was just wondering if anyone knows any other way to look for them, or if someone has tickets and is not able to attend…any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks for the help, and thanks to everyone who manages this site, it is usually the first stop of my day :)

Check on Mondays – they have been releasing tickets almost every Monday morning.

You could also try to get standby tickets, which sometimes work (especially if the weather is less than ideal). You’d have to get there really early, though, to get your name on the list. Here’s more info about standby:

Thanks – I’m gonna need it! Hubby is getting off of work at noon, I think, and we’ll walk over there and get the keys. We’re moving one block west and one block north. :) But it’s a very nice place. We’re seriously scaling down our lifestyle – I’m sick of the clutter. We’ve done more tossing, craigslisting and freecycling than we have packing, I think.

        • dodgerblu31 says:

Good choice! I’m a pack rat myself, and every time I move (which unfortunately is pretty frequently) it seems like I have twice as much “junk” as I did before, but I can’t seem to get myself to get rid of it, by garbage or any other way. So I know what you mean about being sick of the clutter.
I’m glad that you’ll be able to take some time out for Colbert Trivia tonight; thanks for the heads up, I will be heading to the local bar to test my knowledge :)

Yes, I do still have the extra :) As you might know already, they’re not any sort of physical tickets – the person who made the reservation has to give their name at the door – so we’ll have to figure out a way to find each other on the day.

I would just give you my email for cell phone number here if there weren’t such things as spam or crank calls… haha. The best option, I think, is messaging via Facebook, since everyone seems to have one these days. And so I’ve included the link to my profile; just click on my name and say hi!

Maybe one and five were Bears! And the threatdown immediately preceded the astronaut appearance…4…3…2…

My hubby and I thought the #1 threat might have been bears, but when they came back from commercial and then introduced Garrett, I thought maybe the threat had something to do with space. Now I’m starting to wonder if either one of those had anything to do with Nas and the petition. Since CC has yet to post Nas’ performance on the show on the website and considering the media’s meltdown over it, part of me wonders if they wrote this Threat Down a few days ahead, they may not have expected there to be such a huge reaction to everything and may have edited it out last minute.

But then again, I’m just guessing…

Me hopes it’s something fun and exciting they’ll reveal on Monday. The last time they cut up a Threat Down, we got the Starbucks shower scene. Hehehe…
