Canton not happy with the Colbert Slight

Apparently Canton, GA is not aware that The Colbert Report is a comedy. From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
Colbert’s ‘crappy Canton’ comment puzzles mayor
By JAMIE GUMBRECHT
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 07/23/08Michigan has a Canton, just like Texas, Minnesota, Kansas, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and North Carolina.
None of those Cantons came up, though, when Stephen Colbert, host of “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central, lauded the travel schedule of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
“I’ve got his schedule right here,” Colbert said during Monday’s show. “This week, Sen. McCain is rocking through Kennebunkport, Maine … Rochester, New Hampshire … Baltimore, Maryland. That means crabcakes! And Canton. And not the crappy Canton in Georgia. I’m talking about Canton, Ohio! Where he is hosting a … finance reception.”
The comment riled Georigia’s Canton lovers, many of whom said so on Internet message boards.
It’s unwarranted, the Georgia town’s mayor says. Surely, Colbert has our Canton mixed up with another?
“He’s never been here,” Mayor Gene Hobgood says of the comedian. “He doesn’t realize it’s one of the fastest growing cities in the nation.”
And here’s the segment discussed in the article.

It’s possible Stephen’s trying to insult every city named Canton :)
If I remember “Wigfield” correctly, Canton, Ohio wasn’t positively portrayed either.

I live really close to the Canton in NC, and it is pretty crappy, I’m not gonna lie. The whole town smells funny because of the paper factory. When you drive through you have to close your windows and even then your A/C or heat starts smelling weird.

Yeah, there were a few people complaining about it on the Colboards, but the general consensus was that they were it-getters just trying to get Stephen to visit their town. He can bash my city too! I do it all the time. LOL!

Jeez, get over it!
Just last week he was knocking my adopted home (Australia) for tricking the Pope into thinking a Koala was a Gray Cat.
And, If I had a dollar for everytime Stephen has insulted my true homeland (New Zealand), I’d be rich by now.
But hey, at least I can take pride in the fact that our Forest Workers can destroy more wildlife in a timelier fashion! ;-P

i don’t think its right to insult each and every city like this. you are not living over there but ask those who were born there and have memories attached to it

They had the mayor of Canton, GA on an Atlanta radio station this morning and he understands that it was a joke. Everyone knows it was all in fun. People (media) are blowing this out of proportion as if the entire city is enraged.

I live in Canton, GA. And I have to admit – it’s pretty f’n lame. Unless you’re a big fan of Wal-Mart and chain resturants. Changing for the better, but still small city / suburban craptastic, IMHO. Bash away, Stephen, bash away!

Keep in mind, it’s common knowledge if you are watcher of the show that you are suppose to take everything he says and think the opposite. So maybe try watching the show and you’ll get it… OR you can go on the show and prove him wrong!
