Friday Free-for-all

Pink Tie

Howdy, Zoners! Hope your week has gone well. We found a really neat and interesting article this week from an Australian fan who was able to go to their first live show of The Colbert Report during their recent vacation:

So. It is June 2008. My husband Peter and I are standing on a bleak, midtown street, outside a bleached, slightly abandoned-looking building. We have come to New York, not for the traditional attractions (Miss Liberty! Empire State!), but to sit in the audience at a taping of The Colbert Report. I have dressed up for Colbert, who is always dapper and natty. A Colbert doppelganger (short, neat hair, glasses), ticks our name off a list. Others join us in the queue.

We are ushered into a grimy waiting room reminiscent of some holding facility at Gitmo. Once we have passed through the metal detector and bag check, we sit on chairs facing the toilets. As the room fills with members of the Colbert Nation, it dawns on me that Peter and I are probably the only ones not at uni. Nerds sure love Colbert. The only other exception to the Asperger club is a late-middle-aged woman with long grey hair. She has that menopausal look of one who is on the cusp of moving to a country town to open a purple-themed candle shop, but her face lights up when our wrangler tells us to have a question ready to ask Colbert. “Steven likes smart, funny questions,” he tells us, then adds warningly: “Not, ‘can I get a photo?”‘

And then we are filing into the studio. The warm-up guy (a comedian) is great. Edgy. Maybe too edgy. There is a slight chill in the air when he refers to a bloke in the audience as “the black dude”, but he is adept enough to joke his way out of trouble. Peter and I have a thrill of participation when we reluctantly put up our hands to volunteer our coming-from-another-countryness. The warm-up studies us before proclaiming: “Australia!” It’s a good party trick, better still when, moments later, he announces our host.

It’s always … interesting reading taping reports from people outside of our close knit little fandom here.

So, here is my question for you to start the conversation today: What are some of the things that really leapt out at you during your first live show? What surprised you? What made you exceedingly happy? What really stuck out as something that you’ll never forget?

(And don’t forget, you can use this thread to talk about anything off-topic too. Because, I gotta be honest, I’ve been dying to talk about Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog all friggin’ week. Anyone else totally loving this thing inappropriately? While my fandom heart belongs to the Colbert Nation, I’ll always have a huge chunk of my soul dedicated to Joss Whedon. So … discuss!)

Comments

  1. His HANDS. They’re so SOFT. And his eyes…he makes you feel like you’re the only person in the room…*sigh*

    He’s beautiful.

It’s way more amazing than I can put in words.

He’s humble, and amazingly hilarious, and sweet, and beautiful, and so. Amazing.

You seriously just made my heart melt. Which is the second time today. The first time my heart melted was when I got the new issue of Esquire with him on the cover.
      I’m still smiling :)

    • Tonks says:

dude yes. (by the way, this is colbertican.)

He is the most beautiful person I have ever met. and so gracious! He just kept telling me that he loved the portrait. And Mark had told me when I was in line that he “really wanted to meet me.” !!!!

  2. Jess says:

I’ve never been particularly keen on Kate Langbroek (the author of the article – she’s also a radio personality here in Australia), but it makes me happy that people in the Australian media are beginning to recognise the awesomeness of the Report.

Oh! And heads up for any Australian fans – The Comedy Channel now appears to be airing TDS and TCR Mondays through Fridays. It appears we’re now getting the Global Editions on Mondays (eeee!) and the regular episodes Tuesdays through Fridays, a few hours behind the American broadcast. (Yes! No more having to wait four days for the Thursday shows!) The Report now airs at 7pm and repeats at 10:30pm.

OMG Friday night episodes!!! Thank you so much!!!! I just got “home” from uni for the holidays and so would have missed that!!

Now only 45 minutes till Stephen & Jon!!

  3. I was surprised that the Q&A part went so fast! He only answered a couple of questions … I didn’t even have time to get past the “Wow, he’s right in front of me” aweglomeration.

Oh. My. GOD!!! DB – I cannot believe you just brought up “Dr. Horrible”!! I just – literally 15 minutes ago – discovered this delicious morsel of perfection (excuse my french, but HOLY C&@P!, Neil Patrick Harris AND NATHAN FILLION?! SINGING!!!!!). I’m sorry, it’s late, I’ve just finished watching Craig Ferguson who spent half the evening being hyper-hyper because his underwear was too tight (!!!), and then this treasure lights up my screen from so far out of left field I could swear it started in the bleachers. All these years I’ve resisted exploring the whole “Buffy” thing, which I missed the first time around. But I managed to snag the tail end of “Firefly” before it was yanked away, SO way too soon. And now I’m convinced that Whedon is this century’s more hooked-up (and less medicated) coming of Harlan Ellison, and I must acquiesce.

In a funny way, there’s a lot of the same brilliance that Stephen has, except Stephen plays all the parts. Does that make any sense? I’m going to bed now.

OMG!!! I am so glad you brought up “Dr. Horrible”, DB! I just downloaded it this morning!
Neil Patrick Harris!! Josh Whedon!! SINGING!!
Evil scientist!! SINGING!! What’s NOT to like! I can’t wait to download Act 2(I think it is available today?).
And, as you can tell, I do love it inappropriately!!

      • DB says:

I have some Twitter friends that all we’ve been doing all week is talking about how weird and wonderful Dr. Horrible is. I love everything about it SO MUCH! I love the evil laugh coach, and the laundry, and the struggle within Dr. Horrible/Brad. I even love the cheezy good guy/bad guy costumes. And “Moist” – HAHAHAH!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Sadie07 says:

I just got off the phone after a long “Dr. Horrible” conversation(work? did someone mention work?). There was a great
          deal of discussion about “Moist”.
          Mwah-hahaha!

I watched all three acts of Dr. Horrible for the first time last night and LOVED what I saw! I especially liked the stalker fans in Act 2. I’m going to have to buy these from iTunes so I can watch them over and over.

Joss Whedon is a twisted, brilliant person!

    • W&M_NU says:

I’m so glad folks brought up Dr. Horrible. I had been hearing about it, but I didn’t have the chance to see it until today. The whole thing is as brilliant as “Firefly” and the “Once More, With Feeling” episode of “Buffy.” Given some of the things that pass as entertainment, it’s so good to know that there is still a market for intelligent humor even beyond the Colbert Universe.

That and it’s hard to go wrong with spontaneously bursting into song :)

I thought that was a great description; it captures the contradictions .

And Dr. Horrible is great! Love the Evil Horse(?) letter readers. lol
It’s so innovative, and I die for the singing. Reminds me of ‘Once More With Feeling”, one of my all-time favorite Buffys.

I’ll be attending my first taping with my sister in September. She doesn’t know yet that we’ll have to wait in line for about three hours. Hope she’ll forgive me.

DB, what struck you during your first live TCR show?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

          :)

That would be nice, yes. Just about all the rest of the staffers have seen a live TCR taping, and have met Stephen at book signing or other events. It’s just hard (read: expensive) to get to NYC from Dallas, that’s all.

    We can be off-topic eh?

Well in that case….THE DARK KNIGHT WAS SO ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I saw it at midnight, and it SO lived up to the hype. And I miss Heath Ledger even more now.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Stephanie says:

I’ve only heard spectacular things about it. I’m seriously going out of my mind, waiting to go see it. I’m worried that if I go tonight, it’ll be sold out. But I entered a radio show contest to win tickets to see it in IMAX. That would be pretty sweet.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Sarah says:

It TOTALLY lives up to the hype, trust me. I was so prepared to be let down by it like all the other movies I’ve bothered to go see at midnight, but it truly was amazing. I’m already going to go see it again in IMAX this Saturday! And as I’m sure you’ve heard, Heath Ledger totally steals the whole movie, it’s like he was made for the part. Good luck with getting those tickets!

I’m going to try to go to a matinee this weekend of the movie, because I’ve heard it’s just off the charts good.

That was a great report…i can totally relate to it…i too am cmg to NYC all the way from india for my post grad and the first thing i’m gonna do is go for the taping…people have been asking me bout the places i’m gonna visit when i get thr (all the tourist places..) and i keep telling everyone that i’m gonna be at the taping first and foremost…it’s funny to see their reaction, considering nobody here has ever heard of Stephen..! hehe…

  9. AnnaT says:

Well my first taping was Nov 1st, the last show before the writers strike. It was pretty much exactly like the Australian couple said. Someone asked him what Shakespeare character he would be, and he said “Hamlet, because he gets to makeout with girls”

I just got tickets for a taping in September, and I also just bought a t-shirt that says:
“Stephen can ‘Better Know’ me anytime!”

What are the chances that if I wait around outside a few hours after the taping I can get him to sign it? All I want is his signature and for him to write “Consider yourself better known” on my shirt. That would probably make my life :-)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Tonks says:

where did you get that t-shirt?!!

And it probably varies day-to-day. The day I went, Stephen had to rush off somewhere immediately afterward so he didn’t greet fans after the show, but this isn’t the case all the time.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • AnnaT says:

got to http://www.cafepress.com and search stephen colbert… there are hundreds of awesome colbert shirts.

i really wanted the “George W. Bush: Great president or the greatest president?” I really wanted it, except that people who don’t watch colbert might have beaten me and thrown me on the subway tracks

hopefully i can meet stephen after this taping :-)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  10. My first (and only) taping was this past January, during my first visit to NYC. It was during the strike, but I was in NYC for an internship thing and we had spent the day touring the FOX News studios and CNN. My mom and I were walking back to our hotel and I told her we should stop by TCR just to see if we could get in. We were next-to-last in line! We ended up having to stand for the show but I, uh, didn’t really care. He is so cute during the breaks, singing and dancing, even while Allison Silverman is trying to talk to him. :P

  11. tiger says:

well…even though I have been posting like crazy about it, I guess it is worth mentioning AGAIN that I am going to my first taping THIS Wednesday and I am getting more excited every day! I keep having dreams about it…some of them are fun, others are alarming, but what is nice is waking up and remembering that I really do have tickets!

right now I’m…well…putting a lot of thought into what I should wear, and what I should bring. and when I’ll get there. and I already came up with the question I want to ask. eek it’s fun just to talk about it in a free-for-all way.

    • Lisa says:

If waiting for TCR is anything like waiting for TDS, the absolute most important thing to know is to dress for the weather. Unless you have VIP tickets, you’ll inevitability be waiting in line outside for more than a few hours. I’ve heard some folks to get there around 2:30 or 3-ish even if you have tickets. Up here in the Northeast (NJ) right now, it’s in the mid-90′s and humid. So, keep a very close eye on the weather in NYC and be sure to dress appropriately.

Bring something to occupy your time and sustenance (if it’s going to be hot, bring lots of fluids). They don’t allow food in the studio (at least they didn’t at TDS) and from getting in line to exiting the studio after the taping, you could be talking about 5 hours or so. Security is pretty tight there too (it was at TDS at least) so if you bring a camera with you to take pictures while you’re in line, you may have to leave it with security while you’re inside the studio.

I’m offering all this information based upon my experience at a TDS taping on February 28th of this year. It was a “balmy” 20 degrees outside, and we waited outside in line for about 3 hours. To say it was cold is an understatement. And I even dressed in layers! I have yet to attend my first taping of TCR even though I had tickets like 3 times over the last 6 months but had to give them up due to a back injury; however, I was able to snag a few for September 3rd and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the 4th time’s a charm. (Sorry this is so long!)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • tiger says:

        cool, thanks for the info!

I’m only a couple of hours from NYC myself, so I a have a general idea of the current weather…it’s a little cooler here though. the forecast is not supposed to be in the 90s during our trip, but it’s still going to be pretty warm. we’ll have to buy water for the wait for sure.

also, I’ll probably just bring a book to read…I love to read and it can occupy me anywhere. I was going to ask somewhere if I could bring a camera. I don’t mind if they hold it, because I’m sure they’ll keep it safe. I just don’t want them to be angry at me or something!

it’s really important that I think ahead though because I’ll be in the city for 5 days and I can only bring a medium-sized suitcase…and I am not good at packing light AT ALL.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Lisa says:

No problem! I think the security folks understand how excited Stephen’s fans are to be there, and I don’t think they’ll give you any grief about it, but I’m pretty sure they’ll hold it while you’re inside. Just be sure to get it back once the taping is over. ; )

I swear, their security is better than at most airports I’ve been to lately. While you’re your seats waiting for the taping to begin, there are some staff members (interns maybe?) that stand and watch the audience closely in case someone’s snuck in some kind of recording device or forbidden object. If they catch you, you’re outta there. I’m pretty sure they caught someone while I was there…but again, this was at The Daily Show and I can only assume things are run similarly at The Colbert Report as well. That’s not to say you’ll do that (’cause I’m not), but I’m just giving an example of the security measures they have in place.

They were also kind enough to let the audience in 30 minutes early because it was so bloody cold outside, and because they were waiting for BriWi to show up (as he was running late for the taping. Jon came out and said, “We’re waiting for him to finish ‘the news’ ” [using air quotes] and he apologized for the delay and thanked us for being so patient.

          Have a wonderful time!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Ms Interpreted says:

If you have pepper spray or weapons, etc., security will take and hold those while you’re there, but cameras are fine (just don’t even try to take pictures inside the studio). They’ll explain everything when you’re there; they have a very friendly and professional staff.

It’s absolutely a good idea to dress for the weather and prepare yourself for a wait. When they say that they “strongly recommend” that you arrive “at least” an hour and a half before the doors open, take them seriously. There are days when they have more space than expected and they let the people in the standby line in, but there are also days where they turn people away, and you obviously don’t want to take your chances with that. If you’re going to be there with your mom, there are several places within a block or two of the studio where one or the other of you can get food while the other one stands in line, and most of the people in line with you will be friendly enough, so the time passes quickly.

          Have fun!

When I went to my taping back in May I remember how he and his staff seemed to get along really well. They all seemed in love with their jobs. When his make up artist was finished applying his make up he sat there and patted her on the head a few times. It was random and funny.
I also remember how amazing it is to watch Stephen watch his own pre-taped segments. The way he reacts to himself is really cute.
    And god he’s so nice/such a geek.

  13. My first taping was on 2/11/08. I can’t really pick out anything specific that really stood out to me, because it was all so phenomenal! The shock and awe of seeing the set live and in person for the first time, the shock and awe of seeing Stephen live and in person for the first time… it was all so awesome and great to be there. The best thing that happened, though, was that I got to go backstage and meet Stephen afterwards. :-D

(Side note: When I looked into Stephen’s eyes, I can honestly say that the one thing I saw was kindness; I know it’s been mentioned in past reports, but Stephen really does have very kind eyes. He’s also very sincere and one of the nicest, sweetest people ever.)

The first show I went to was the night Stephen fell and broke his wrist. So that certainly stuck out to me. It happened so fast. I was in the front row and was all excited that I was about to get a high five from Stephen, and then down he went. He did then come lay across the front row though. I just can’t believe that he really broke his wrist then. He played it off okay and got up off the ground fairly quickly, but then had ice on his wrist during all the commercial breaks.

Also, a main thing that stuck out was how many inside jokes there were with the audience that night. It was amazing. I remember at the opening we all kept clapping and I guess we weren’t supposed to, so they had to do it over about 4 times and during the one that’s in the final episode Stephen acts as if he’s about to clap his hands together before he says “tonight!”

  17. Jenny with a Y says:

I haven’t been to a taping in the NY studio but I was fortunate enough to be in the audience for one of the Philly shows.

Stephen is so charismatic in person. He has a level of energy that doesn’t completely translate through the television. He definitely feeds off of the audience’s energy and gives it right back.

It was a joy to see him do his signature spin when he came on stage.

During the Q&A session, we were lucky enough to be serenaded with a song (the one he tried to sing to Michelle Obama when she was on the show). It was a treat to see him out of character during this time. He was as charming and witty in person as I hoped he would be.

The night that I was at the show, there was a technical snafu and the first act had to be taped over again. They were already running extremely late and there was a lot going on that night so I’m sure the snafu was frustrating to everyone on stage. I was impressed with how Stephen handled this situation. He was kind and professional with his staff. He was focused on what needed to get done but he also took the time to entertain the audience with things like standing on his head and doing splits in the air with his legs, throwing Doritos at Ben Franklin, etc.

One thing that I found very endearing was that Stephen chewed on the end of his pen when he was working on the script for the show. One of my favorite things though was watching him when John Edwards was delivering EdW0RDS. Stephen mouthed some of the lines as Edwards was delivering them. It was also clear that he was enjoying the segment as much as the audience. He was laughing too.

After the show was over, he took the time to thank everyone on stage, including the Secret Service men, before making his way over to the audience.

I will never forget that night in Philly. Stephen and his staff were all wonderful. Everyone was positive and professional even though it was the last night of an exhausting week of shows.

I am determined to get Stephen’s autograph one of these days. I had tickets to see him in Washington, DC during his book tour but I woke up with a stomach virus that day and couldn’t go.

I’m just glad I got to ask him a question, on top of meeting him before the show. that was a freakin’ sweet experience. And I loved how playful he was during the commercial breaks: throwing a pencil repeatedly at a director of some sort, popping the bag he had just fake-vomited into, air-guitaring to the songs blared overhead… It was just wonderful. Unforgettable.

Before I say anything about my first taping, I’d like to point out something:

“Nerds sure love Colbert. The only other exception to the Asperger club is a late-middle-aged woman with long grey hair.”

WTF. And she calls Pete edgy? She just called all nerds partially autistic. Wow. I hope all Australians don’t generalize being a nerd as a sole qualification for having Asperger’s Syndrome. A joke like that should never reach American soil. Honestly.

In any case, my first taping was January 30th, 2006, having been rewarded for freezing my feet off in standby with entry. The taping was actually mentioned in the times a couple weeks later. There are two things I always distinctly remember.

    1. I ended up in the last seat of the front row, so when doing his high five thing, Stephen JUST missed me.

    2. There’s one point where I’m cheering exceptionally fangirlishly, like going “OW OW!” and it made Stephen smile for a fraction of a second. I suggest to anyone who goes to a taping to consistently cheer their loudest, because Stephen hears you when you’re loud, and you can tell.

I’m seriously jealous of all of you. I have to wait two more years until I’m allowed in the studio.
    I tell my friends, “I can’t wait until I’m 18!”
“Why, cause you’ll be legal/an adult?”
“No, cause then I can go to a taping of the Colbert Report!!! *sigh*”

Dude, I’m still not 18 yet. xD I have my own secret way of getting in, but basically all you have to do is make sure the ticket holder is 18 (99.9% of the time they only check their ID, if they even check ID) and you get in.

And now I remember, it was 07, not 06. >_>

You just made my day :)
Thanks for that information. Now hopefully I can go for my 17th instead of my 18th birthday. The sooner the better!

Ok, kids, let’s stop this now. I don’t want to advocate or condone people doing what the show specifically does not allow. Okay?

Thank-you all for sharing your taping stories. I’ve been having fun living vicariously through everyone. I hope someday to go to a taping or otherwise see Stephen in person, but getting back to the East Coast is a little difficult. I’m still kicking myself for missing Stephen at the Northwestern parade (which was two blocks from my apartment). Sadly, I was not yet an “It-getter” at the time.

The energy level of the taping was what really swept me away. Stephen is like a quasar–a ridiculously luminous stellar presence that sucks in and releases more energy than seems physically possible(can you tell I’ve been reading Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s books this summer?) He’s functioning on an intellectual level that surpasses definition and he zips around a room with so much confidence that it’s a testament to his character that he’s still at the same time very humble.

And yes, his hands are very soft and warm despite the meat locker temperature of the studio. He high-fived me twice(front row, people! It’s where it’s at!) and of course, I’ll never forget how he happily took my D20 die and rolled it on his desk(twice!) and gave it back to me instead of donating it to the Smithsonian. He’s a true sweetheart.

I just want to say thank you so much for linking to Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog. That is the most amazing thing I’ve seen in a while. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve watched/listened to it.

I know it’s no longer Friday, but this was too random to put in a more recent Colbert post…

what happened to the date-selector on thedailyshow.com? You know, that big box under videos in which you could select specific dates, going all the way back to 1999? It’s now once again a jumbled myriad of recent videos, and hasn’t returned to the site since before the two week break. I also thought it’d be a great idea for the Colbert Report official website, but that’s just me. I can’t imagine why they’d take it off, it was very convenient. Anyone have any idea?
