Eye Candy: More pics from the August 2008 Esquire article

Thank you to Zoner Allison P. for these scans! The August 2008 Esquire featuring Stephen Colbert on the cover should be out on newsstands any day now, so make sure to look for it. I called my local Borders and they said they’d call me and hold one when it comes in. Good times!

Anyway, so enjoy these scans!

    OW @ the third one.

I like the first one, but upon closer inspection, the suit he’s wearing under the armor looks awesome and I wish I could see it. lol

Those are really good, but for once I wish a magazine would just take really nice portrait pics of Stephen. :(

I know! I love the vanity fair pics of him out of character from awhile back.

Me too! Love the one where he’s all in black and has one hand behind his back.

I love those so much it borders on illegal! I agree that while the pics of “Stephen” are fun, it’s really nice to see pics of Stephen once in awhile.

Allison P., you are definitely one of the heroes! Thank you for sharing these pics with the rest of the Nation.

This quote comes to mind while I was looking at these pics:

“To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
    And by opposing end them?”

Same here! I couldn’t help but to think of the “To Be or Not To Be” speech as well.

that is either great photoshop or phenomenal make-up dept. on the 3rd one. is there some sort of literature reference in the 1st one? it escapes me. the only one i can think of is guy fawkes, but i’m pretty sure that’s wrong.

    • DB says:

I believe it’s a Joan of Arc reference, about being burned at the stake. There’s two saintly references in this photo shoot – St. Joan of Arc and St. Sebastian (with the arrows).

I think you’re right about the two pictorial religious references, but I believe the title, “The Passion of Stephen Colbert” is also a religious reference to the movie, the Passion of the Christ.

It’s an interesting choice for an image/title because I’ve often thought that the way people sometimes try to touch him or get close to him, has strong hints of Christ- among -the- flock, speak-but-the-word-and-my-soul-will-be-healed, to it.

this was already out at my grocery store on Tuesday…then again, they also had out a magazine that I have a subscription to, and it didn’t come in MY mail until later that day. so they’re pretty early. still none at B&N yesterday though.

Stephen’s expression on the last one’s like “tada!! i brought you an arrow but it got stuck on my face:(“

    OH NO THEY SHOT STEPHEN!

It’s funny how when he raises his eyebrows like that it looks like it actually put a dent in his head.

The bookstores near me still don’t have this issue on the shelves yet but I found it this morning at a local grocery store. The article is short but extremely funny. I showed the magazine to a coworker of mine and we ended up reading about the victimization of the white male together and picking out our favorite lines. Of course the pictures are great too! I think Stephen needs to do more photoshoots in boxer shorts. :-)

Just a head’s up for everyone, I checked with our distributor and the official on-sale date for this mag is today, Jul 11th. Of course, every place varies as far as when they get it out, but most places should start carrying it today or, perhaps, by Monday at the latest. I already grabbed my copy and it looks like it’s going to be a fun read. :)

I found a copy at my local newsstand just today! The article is very funny and, of course, seeing Stephen on the cover of anything is enough to make my day (the boxer shorts are the icing, though).

  15. Very funny to have this going around at work today and hearing a few young guys under 22 opinions. They know I’m a fan but not what a fangirl is. LOL! (and I’m not tellin) They don’t see what the fuss is about. ~ fine! ~

  17. I agree…these are cute and all, but I would love regular Stephen to get his own photo spread. Cause two of my fave pics of him (the black shirt with the arm behind his back and the hair ruffle leg resting on the chair arm) are of him just being him. Oh, and of course the suit picture. That’s all it needs to be called, the suit picture.
