His face! His beautiful face!

Oh, poor Stephen! I was so shocked by his bleeding eye sockets and stitches that I totally don’t feel like ragging on him for recycling the intro.

Ouch, Stephen!

Click here to see a close-up picture of Stephen Colbert with his face injury.

Just FYI, those aren’t shadows under his eyes, those are shiners. Ouch!

And wearing glasses when the bridge of your nose and your eyes are injured like that is really painful. Poor Stephen! What happened?

He didn’t mention what happened exactly- just made a joke connecting it to his wrist injury, showing clips of “face violence”.

      • Mike says:

Given that Stephen refrained from revealing the cause of this horrific injury, we can only speculate as to what happened. So I say in the spirit of truthiness let the speculation begin.
In my mind, it’s clear…sucker-punched by Kung Fu Panda. It all fits.

In the spirit of truthiness, I assumed that Mike Myers was mad that Stephen didn’t get the Colbert Nation to go see “The Love Guru” and so he punched him.

      That poor beautiful face!!!

Kina, I agree that wearing glasses with those injuries has to be painful. I’m sure his wounds look much worse without the stage make-up.

I hope Stephen’s face doesn’t hurt too much. Maybe he needs those pain killers “Stephen” likes so much.

He certainly was high energy tonight in spite of his injuries. Excellent show!

He needs to tell us what happened, but so far we’ve speculated “Stephen” got into a fight with a bear or got punched by some wingnut.
Either way one of those stories could be appearing on Wikipedia if someone is brave enough to post it.
If you went to the taping tell us what happened.

looking at his injuries it appears that he either ran into or fell on something. to have split open his nose and bruise his eyes. I could very well be wrong though. please post if you were at the taping!

  5. TruthPower says:

It looked pretty bad to me. It does look painful. Stephen, who hurt you? Should we attack whaterver/whoever did it? Is there eye violence now?

    Last year was the wrist.

    This year was the face.

What are the bets for next year? I’d guess the knee.

I probably shouldn’t say this, but Stephen’s eyes reminded me of the way my father’s looked after he had work done on them.

I’m happy that Stephen is finally admitting to actually hurting his wrist on the 21st…the correct date.

  9. storm_03 says:

it sortta looked like whatever hit him, or when he got hit, he had sunglasses on or something, cus the cut is right on the bridge of the nose, and the bruises are right where another pair of glasses might rest, it looks like the ones he was wearing tonight were different though, cus they rested right below all the marks… at least it wasn’t right on them, so hopefully he wasn’t in too much pain =S

Awwee, poor Stephen! Whatever happened, that had to hurt like hell. And what a terrible place to have to have stitches. I guess the third week in June has bad Stephen karma.

The timing of it was pretty odd! Stephen has a good sense of timing even when it comes to injurying himself!

Seriously, though, hope he heals quickly.

    :(

Poor guy. I’m betting he got hit in the face and his glasses are what cut him and the impact to the bridge of his nose bruised his eyes. I’m not a doctor, but I took an anatomy and physiology class one time. …And the same thing has happened to me before.

    Maybe he’ll tell us tomorrow?

    • Ann G. says:

That’s what I thought, it was his glasses that did the damage to his lovely face. How his glasses might have done that is the mystery.

My brother, who also wears glasses, wound up looking like that when he was in an auto accident and his airbag deployed and pushed his glasses into his face. That’s not necessarily what happened to Stephen, but the injury looks similar to that.

      Hope he heals quickly.

Wikipedia said at 12:51am EST (6.24.08):
On June 23, 2008, Stephen celebrated his one year anniversary of his wrist injury and subsequently his campaign against wrist violence in the media. Stephen then revealed injuries to his face including stitches and blackened eyes. He proposed a new campaign against face violence in the media.[19] The injuries to Stephen’s face are likely due to a run in with Diego Sanchez on June 21, 2008 at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada after the The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale.[citation needed]

  15. Fernando F. says:

I think he try to go through a wall with. The damage seems to be cause by the eyeglasses. The metallic frame cut his skin and the glass frame just make him bleed internally below the eye. Maybe the accident was so stupid that he feels shame in recounting the events.

  16. Olivia says:

I knew I’d heard that intro before!

I feel bad for his face — his beautiful face! — but I can’t help finding it hilarious that a year after America’s wrists changed forever, he has a new body-part campaign to launch, if he’s so inclined. I hope we get at least a few more montages of face violence in the media. And imagine what FaceStrong bracelets might look like.

Although I’m distressed that Stephen suffered injury, I find his look of accusatory consternation in the screencap somehow, er, cute. I know what happened isn’t funny, but he manages these great looks even in unfunny situations.
