Let’s all go to the movies!

By DB on June 20th, 2008 ·

Well, we’re off to go see “The Love Guru” this evening (9:40p at the Dallas NorthPark 15). What is everyone going to see this weekend at the theater? Or are you going to wait until the movie comes out on DVD?

I’ve included a video review of the two movies, and the pluses and minuses of each movie. No new Stephen footage, but some good bits with “Get Smart”.

I just got back from seeing it too! OMG I loved it!

It actually made me love Steve even more, and I didn’t even think that was possible.

From the Premiere in Toronto:
I tried my best not to give too much away:

i saw “the love guru” last night at the premiere, and i loved it!! But of course my opinion can be viewed as bias, seeing that I’m a Canadian “Toronto Maple Leafs” fan who loves mike Myers, John Oliver and Colbert ;)

the important thing when approaching this movie is not to expect too much in terms of storyline, it’s just a really light and fun movie with a star-studded cast, including guest appearances from Jessica Simpson and Val Kilmer O_o… the spirit was generally high here in Toronto because it was great to see our city and team front and centre, the Premiere was crazy and loud, but it was fun, I may go back a second time when the excitement dies down, so I can actually hear some of the dialogue =P. everyone screamed when the team scored a goal in the movie and many (including myself) cheered when Colbert came on the screen.

About Stephen Colbert in the movie:

I don’t want to spoil it for those of you going to see it, but I’ll just let you know that Stephen Colbert is in about 5-10% of the movie so it was a real treat, his name was about 10th in the credits(as “Jay Kell”) if that gives you an idea lol, he was really funny and a highlight for sure, and surprisingly none of the lines we hear in the trailers are in the movie, so that means that hopefully they may have a lot of outtakes and extras on the DVD!! XD
they finally added it to his credits on IMDB
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0170306/

But don’t take my word for it, decide for yourself, hopefully you guys enjoy it as much as we did….

I’m going to see “Get Smart” Tomorrow =)

thanks for the review.
I can’t wait to go see it on Sunday.
that’s when we’re going to see a triple feature of Get Smart, The Love Guru, and The Happening(which i am not to excited to see, but my friend really wants to see it, so whatever.)
And I’m a fan of The Toronto Maple Leafs, so I’ll probably be the only one cheering when they score a goal (because I live in Georgia, USA.)

I spout the civic pride, yet I’m so jaded when celebrities spout the Toronto-love rhetoric. Sad, really.

I think you feel that way, because Toronto is fast becoming one of those central cities, you know everything big in Canada happens here, and all the big movies are shot here, so it’s really easy to say you love it… so it’s beginning to not mean anything anymore, it’s almost like saying ” I love New York”… and although I do, it doesn’t mean much, or carry any weight anymore sadly…

I love it that they call Steve Carrel and newcomer.

I just returned from “The Love Guru”. Stephen Colbert was absolutely hilarious in his role as a drug addicted, sex addicted hockey announcer. He was by far the funniest person in the film. He also received the loudest laughs from the audience. Most of the Stephen scenes that we saw in the trailers were cut from the movie so the majority of his jokes were new to me. I thought that John Oliver and Justin Timberlake were great too!

I enjoyed all of the hockey scenes in the film but the rest was hit or miss for me.

I don’t think I’ll get to the theater this weekend, but I’d definitely go for Get Smart over The Love Guru.

TruthPower, I’ve noticed that your comments frequently get caught in our spam filter. We’re doing our best to keep clearing it out and marking you as “not spam”, but for some reason (possibly because you often post multiple comments back to back?), the filter catches you pretty often. I’m not sure what to tell you about this and we’re trying to keep on top of it but, yes, I have noticed that you frequently show up in the “spam” queue. Sorry ’bout that.

I’ll see Get Smart in a couple of weeks, but I’ll wait for The Love Guru to come out on DVD.

Can we assume that Myers approached Colbert to appear The Love Guru? Just curious how that all transpired.

I’m thinking that he, Colbert and even Steve Carell knew each other from SNL (their tenures overlap by about a year or so), or maybe even second city… he and Jon Stewart are also quite close so who knows… to me the movie, more than anything, was just a real testament to the amount of famous friends he has ;) it’s crazy!!lol

I don’t know what I’m going to do. I never watch crude movies, and I’m sitting here going…err PG-13, should I take the plunge? (even though I’m old enough to attend TCR tapings!)

edit: sorry I didnt meant to reply to you…I seem to have clicked in the wrong spot…oh well…

Don’t force yourself to go see something you don’t care for. You can always catch the good parts when the film comes out on DVD…and I’m guessing The Love Guru will come to DVD sooner rather than later since it probably won’t last long in the theatres:)

yeah.
I’m not thinking that it will last long here.
But you can still see it on dvd, like mentioned.
and Colbert clips will probably make their way onto the internet anyway.

I posted in a reply farther up the page, but in short:

Go see “Get Smart”. It really was very funny, and just plain fun.

I personally think Guru is going to get blown out of the water by Get Smart in the box office… at least it did in reviews.

Well, I did it kids. I went to the movie, and I survived it. :P

I even got quite a few laughs out of it. Stephen, of course, made me giggle (there’s a scene with one of those draw-on screens where I laughed quite heartily), and I adored Justin Timberlake’s role. I wish they would have used Gaffigan more, but I thought they did good with what they had to work with.

I have to say- I saw both Love Guru and Get Smart, although I got in free to see Love Guru because of a gift card. Love Guru wasn’t nearly as horrifically bad- I even got a few laughs unrelated to the Colbert Gaffigan duo, which was a surprise. Colbert was hilarious, and the fact that most of his lines in the trailer weren’t used in the movie makes me hope they’ll be a lot of unaired footage on the DVD. Sadly, Gaffigan didn’t really have a lot to do other than react to Stephen.

Get Smart was hilarious! I agree with some of the reviews saying it was predictable, and it also seemed like it didn’t quite know what kind of movie to be. But I genuinely enjoyed it.

I haven’t seen the Love Guru yet, bet we just got home from seeing Get Smart, and I loved it! I’m old enough to have watched the original when it was on TV. I thought they did a wonderful job capturing the feel of the show without totally copying it. There was a nice homage feel to it. And I laughed a lot.

Just read that Get Smart got #1 at the box office, while The Love Guru got #4.
