The reviews for ‘The Love Guru’ come in – ” … but Stephen Colbert is hilarious!”

We’ve been waiting anxiously here at No Fact Zone for the reviews to come out for The Love Guru, opening this Friday, June 20th. And the reviews are, quite honestly, what we were kind of expecting. But many of the reviews we’ve read have a common theme.

The Hollywood Reporter:

The only actor who really scores is news talk show/comic Stephen Colbert, who plays a drug-addled, sex-addicted hockey broadcaster. He is absolutely hysterical.

FoxNews.com:

He’s written a nice bit for Stephen Colbert as a drug-addled Pat O’Brien-type announcer. So all of that is good and suggests that with “The Love Guru” out of his system, Myers could return to form.

The-Reviewer.net:

One Sentence: Stephen Colbert was the only thing good in this movie. … The only thing that was even remotly amusing was Stephen Colbert, and I bet he either wrote, or changed his lines himself.

Willamette Week:

The only bits I really enjoyed in ‘The Love Guru’, besides some B-side riffing by Stephen Colbert, were the gonzo musical numbers, a form that Myers arguably understands better than anyone actually directing musicals today.

Movies.about.com:

Also faring surprisingly well in a tiny supporting role is Stephen Colbert, although it would have been funnier if one of the teams had a bear for a mascot so that Colbert could riff on the film’s pro-bear agenda. Colbert delivers some of the best lines in the movie as a drug addicted play by play announcer who never censors the words that come out of his mouth when he’s high.

Montreal Film Journal:

Then, being Québécois myself, I found Justin Timberlake to be particularly hilarious, and I was also tickled by the supporting performances of Stephen Colbert, The Daily Show’s John Oliver and Verne Troyer, even though it feels like the latter is doing leftover Mini-Me material.

i’m not surprised that Colbert is the best thing in the movie, i’m sure he is… and i bet he did write some of his lines or make them up on the spot, he’s so good that way…
    oh i’m gonna see it tonight… i’m super excited ;) can’t wait!!!!

Is it a coincidence that the best bits were improvised by Stephen himself? Probably not. Someone please stop giving Mike Myers the money to make films.

Does anyone know how large of a role this is? I mean, is his total screen time just a couple of minutes? Considering the lousy reviews in general, I may wait for the DVD (and hopefully Stephen outtakes).

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like “Get Smart” is getting much better reviews. That makes me sad.

i think he has only a very small part in this movie, unfortunately…

Hahaha! Loved this review bit: “…it would have been funnier if one of the teams had a bear for a mascot so that Colbert could riff on the film’s pro-bear agenda.”

Too bad they couldn’t cross “Stephen” with the character he plays in the movie.

And, ouch! RottenTomatoes.com is usually my gauge on whether or not I’ll like pretty much anything, with only a few exceptions. Perhaps as they add more reviews to the movie’s page, the rating will go up a tad.

I knew this wasn’t going to be the greatest movie. but because of Stephen, I’m obligated to see it! I’m glad to see he did his best to hold up the rest of the movie. Some movies are just beyond saving.

if you’re going to be in an obviously bad movie, this is the way to do it. you can know how awesome you are when you sign up and then be the shining star!

although I wish John Oliver more good comments too…there’s at least that one.

I like the eye candy included in this post. What a cute pic of Stephen!

I have no doubt that Colbert is the funniest person in the film. How could anyone be funnier than Stephen Colbert?
