Six Degrees: Friends and colleagues of Stephen Colbert are everywhere
By
I’ve gotta tell you, sometimes, when it comes to trying to keep up with even a small number of Stephen Colbert’s friends and colleagues, I’ve been known to wish he didn’t have *quite* as many. ‘Cause really, it’s a little overwhelming! Still I do my level best: here are some of items of interest concerning that ever-growing circle of Colbert-colleagues.
John Oliver (The Daily Show)
- I have to start with these because they made me laugh so hard. Two brief videos of John “singing” and “dancing” at the Amnesty International event in Philadelphia. (Okay, the air quotes were mean, but I have nothing but delighted affection for these vids.)
I’m sticking the rest of this post behind a cut because I’ve just realized how long it is; there are items on Steve Carell, Dan Dinello, Eric Drysdale and many more. Hope you find it enjoyable!
Jon Stewart and Steve Carell
- Steve’s been everwhere lately, as readers of this blog should know, and he’s got a busy week ahead. In addition to being on Larry King Live tonight, he’s scheduled for Letterman on Tuesday, Regis and Kelly (and The Daily Show) on Wednesday, and Kimmel on Thursday (thanks for the heads up, Fifi). Lots of fun for you Carell fans!
- There’s also a blurb about Steve over in PopMatters that you can read here.
- Both Steve and former boss Jon Stewart are new additions to Forbes‘ “Celebrity 100” list this year (the 100 most “powerful” celebrities) … and interestingly enough, Forbes chimes in with an article on Comedy Central and what Jon and Stephen mean to the network.
Dan Dinello (Shock Productions, Strangers with Candy)
- Remember that book, The Daily Show and Philosophy? If you weren’t already aware of it, it’s part of a whole series of [___] and Philosophy titles, and there’s a new one coming out on Battlestar Galactica and Philosophy. Dan has contributed a chapter to the book, “The Wretched of New Caprica”; read more about the book here.
Wyatt Cenac (The Daily Show)
- The Comedy Central Insider blog noted the other day that The Daily Show’s newest correspondent, Wyatt Cenac, had been spotted in Palm Beach. And in a bear costume, Wyatt?! They’re GODLESS KILLING MACHINES! Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to seeing this first field piece.
Eric Drysdale (The Colbert Report)
- Don’t forget to swing by Comix tonight if you want to catch Eric in “Wasp Cove”. According to Eric’s blog, the show is a “ludicrous take on ’80s prime-time soap operas” — sure sounds like fun to me.
Amy and David Sedaris
- Another tip of the hat to CC Insider, who has posted some outtakes from Amy’s new movie, Full Grown Men. Not surprisingly where Amy’s concerned, you might want to think twice before listening to this one at work.
- Did you miss David Sedaris’ recent appearance on The Daily Show? I hope not! It sounds like a number of people caught it and were charmed by it; David’s book was number one on the THE USA Today list last week. Congratulations, David!
Dan Levy (“The I Have To Go In A Minute Show”)
- Remember that fun vid from CollegeHumor.com we posted here the other day? If you wondered about the interviewer from that segment, here’s a whole article on Dan Levy from Punchline Magazine. This guy sounds like he’s going places! (Random factoid that I just noticed: I think we might have the same glasses.)
Lewis Black (The Daily Show)
- Last, but certainly not least, we have still more from the very busy Lewis Black, who’s been all over lately. Kinaesthesia wrote her review of Lewis’ DC appearance here (and I chimed in here and here), but he’s also turned up on a couple of NPR segments that we haven’t posted here yet. Here’s the segment he did about Me of Little Faith for Talk of the Nation, and here’s an impressive little video of Lewis’ exchange with a fairly uncomplimentary caller. When all is said and done, Lewis talks about how there are times when he “can’t find the traction to be funny” and compares it to Jon Stewart’s infamous exchange with Tucker Carlson.

I saw the John Oliver videos just last night, but I’d assumed they were old. Ha ha.
I also saw the Amy Sedaris clip a long time ago on YouTube.
I can’t wait for Wyatt’s field piece. I really liked his first segment, even though I don’t watch Lost. :)

There’s a venue in Toronto I’m going to, he’s gonna be there as a guest with a few other ppl including Jimmy Fallon =P, seeing that he’s taking over for Conan and all, I figure I should get to know him more as well… it’s a bit of a trip, but it’s worth it ;)

Since I can’t reply to your other comment, I’ll repeat here: that’s completely fabulous, and I know you’re going to have a wonderful time (even if they did manage to misspell both “Jon Stewart” and “John Oliver” in that ad)!

John Oliver gets more and more adorable everyday. Does everyone listen to his podcast, The Bugle? It’s awesomeness to the nth power.
Also, I love that Lewis Black clip. Especially when he says to the obviously clueless caller, “I can’t believe that you are making a comment when you don’t know what it is that I do.” I love when TDS alums go into the world and surprise people with their sober, intelligent, quick-witted selves so far removed from their silly characterizations on the show. Awesome!

Oh my gosh.
Anybody who sings the Ghostbusters theme is just awesome. I was not expecting that. Or the dancing.
I now want to see John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell and Jon Stewart do a remake of the movie.
Stephen can be Egon.
Jon can be Peter.
Steve can be Ray.
Amy can be Janine.
John Oliver can be Louis.
Larry Wilmore can be Winston.
Gillian Anderson can be Dana.
Paul Dinello can be Walter Peck.

Did anyone else hear John go into a bit of MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” on The Bugle this week? Andy gave him crap for it; it was so adorable!

Mad props to Lew for not totally losing his temper when that [insert expletive here] guy called and heckled him on the air. I’m only at home, sitting at my computer watching it and I was having a few rage issues. Had his interview not been on NPR, I think, he would’ve let that guy have it. I saw him live a few months ago and he actually did an extra 15 minutes because he had to deal with hecklers for so long during his set. Unbelievable.
Like Tim Russert said when people gave him flack for having Stephen on Meet the Press, “Relax, guys. It’s just comedy.”
