Bloomsday on Broadway – STREAMING NOW!
By
Click here to hear the Bloomsday on Broadway, streaming live now until late in the evening.
Not sure when Stephen Colbert will be on, just that it is sometime before the musical interludes begin at 11:15p EDT.
Enjoy! Feel free to post your thoughts about the performance in the comments.
EDIT:
Um, sorry kids, for some reason he didn’t perform. I don’t know why – hopefully we’ll hear something. Maybe he got too busy with the Peabody awards and had to work late? I’ve been listening during the entire performance, so I know we didn’t miss him. I’m sorry, I don’t know what to tell you.

Anyone else having connection issues with it? I keep getting kicked off and I can’t use the iTunes thingy because it says there are too many people on it.

Yeah… I guess I’ll have to use iTunes too. My regular media player isn’t compressing the file and I even tried installing the extra plug-ins.

It looks like they have 21 chapters to go before “Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed” is on. We should be ok. The interview will probably be over by that part.

I want him to answer my question.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
@ TruthPower
ooooo you asked him a question, what did you ask, if you don’t mind me asking =P lol
yeah he’s on on like Wednesday or something, they filmed his 1/2 hour piece like a while ago maybe even last week when he was supposed to go…but they interrupted it for al gore’s endorsement of Barak Obama…
June 16th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
@ storm
I asked him on the day that they were supposed to tape last week what he liked most about being Maxwell Smart. I didn’t know that the actually taped it earlier. I thought they were broadcasting it live. Maybe not. I asked him another question today about what gadget he would like if he could have something cool like what Maxwell Smart has. Then I told him that he is hilarious and good looking. I hope that I did not ask that last one too late. I’d like to see the reaction if mine was picked. Crosses fingers.

no one has heard Stephen yet, right?
according to someone on the colboards, Stephen is reading the portion called “Who’s been sleeping in my bed?” but of course I don’t know what that is…
right now they’re reading from Calypso, episode 4.

right now we’re on “What Have You Got in That Drawer?”
I know this sounds very nerdy but I have actually really enjoying listening to all this. I’ve been at it for 1.5 hours already. the readers have nice voices, and they say some interesting things from time to time, I might be expanding my vocabulary. right now they’re describing some erotic photocards.
I don’t know anything about this book or this author (kind of uneducated, right?) but I want to know who would ever read and care about all of these descriptions!
I don’t mind missing TDS but if this runs into TCR I will … I will … gosh I don’t know.

i feel really uneducated too, i read joyce’s bio on wikpedia, but i really don’t understand what the author is trying to say. is bloom a comically calculating man? i just find this interesting but a little confusing.

Thanks for letting us know what chapter they are on. I am listening to music and reading and I just keep unmuting my computer to check if I hear Stephens voice at all. lol.
I am not familiar with this book or author either. I have only heard the section that Stephen read for this event in the past.

lol tiger – I’m on the same boat as you.
I just remembered this was going on tonight like ten minutes ago and jumped in then; so, no idea what’s going on (not that I would know any better if I had listened since the very beginning haha).
Yet I listen on, for the same reasons mentioned by tiger… aaand of course, that little fellow called Stephen Tyrone Colbert. I assume after he comes on, all the reasons that has kept me listening so far will no longer be enough to make me continue. I know, I know, so ignorant. But listening to all this does give me even greater respect for Stephen’s intelligence!
Meanwhile, some of these readers are on for a really short time! Hopefully that won’t be the case with our Stephen?

on and on and on….
Is this what I will face if I should major in English?
Reply
June 17th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Haha! Potentially. It bodes well for you, though, if you can write a 5 page paper on 2 or 3 sets of lines. A large part of being an English major (I think, having been one) is having the ability to take something relatively minor and insignificant and being able to write paragraph after paragraph on the details and nuances embedded within. Or what my professors liked to call being “long winded”.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Stephen is one of those people that I could listen to read the phone book for hours. His part coming up will pretty much be the equivalent of that for me as I no idea what’s going on. I feel like I’m AP English class all over again and I’m just letting the words wash over me as I doodle in the margins in my notebook.

For anybody who was disappointed not to hear Stephen perform in this year’s Bloomsday, may I suggest visiting (or revisiting) his 2005 performance as Leopold Bloom in the Calypso and Lotus Eaters episodes? They’re available in their entirety at Colbert’s Heroes (here: http://colbertsheroes.org/media.shtml) and aside from the delight of hearing Stephen perform, as somebody who’s not particularly familiar with James Joyce I found them a lot more accessible than the Ithaca episode they did tonight (which, while interesting… frankly hurt my brain).

This is a long shot, but heck, this post is (at least partly) about James Joyce.
I’ve been trying to remember about an audio version of “The Dead” that someone once told me about (it might have been in a larger compilation of Dubliners material); it was a rare version featuring someone like Jeremy Irons as Gabriel, and I remember the reviewer simply raving about it. Does this sound familiar to anyone? As I said, I know it’s a long shot, but I’d be interested in finding it if it rings a bell for anyone.
(Note to self: Track down that John Huston version of “The Dead” … )
Reply
June 17th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
um i remember there was like an old BBC play from the 70’s with Jeremy Irons but it’s the closest i can think of, and it’s not an audio version, but in the synopsis, it’s compared to “the dead”…
“If you enjoyed movies based on literature (such as James Joyce’s wonderful story from “Dubliners” : “The Dead” directed by Huston) you should find this film well worth watching.”
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077830/
and then this one… the one you mentioned right?, but he’s not in it, i believe it was a movie, not sure about the audio thing though =S
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dead_%281987_film%29
Reply
June 17th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
No, this was definitely an audio version of either Dubliners or “The Dead”. The John Huston version of “The Dead” is a separate thing (and one that always comes highly recommended); the audio version is something that I would just be interested in finding. I’m not even sure it was Jeremy Irons, truthfully enough (and heck, he’s not the first actor that comes to mind for such a quintessentially Irish story), but it was someone very like him (in terms of acting caliber/”star power”), if it wasn’t him.
Kind of a needle in a haystack, I know; I just thought I’d throw the question out there. Thanks for chiming in.

Does anyone think that, maybe, possibly, Stephen had a “Tim Russert realization” and decided not to appear at Bloomsday for the sake of his health?
There comes a point when one cannot push one’s self to the point of exhaustion any more without jeopardizing health and/or sanity. I know this is presumptuous, but I can’t help considering it.
