Six Degrees: Steve Carell promos galore

Yay! I was right to think we’d be seeing a lot of Steve Carell in this lead up to the release of Get Smart; he doesn’t disappoint. Here’s a small sampling of Steve’s promotional blitz:

  • On Friday, NPR’s Fresh Air replayed most of Steve’s interview with Terry Gross (originally aired October 2007). This was the interview in which Steve talked about his role on The Office, his idea for The 40-Year-Old Virgin and his work on The Daily Show (for which we can thank Stephen), among other things. If you missed it then, listen to it again, and it’s worth another listen, if you haven’t heard it for a while.
  • The Register-Mail (Galesburg) also featured a piece on Steve last Friday. While the article — naturally — focuses on Get Smart, I actually found this passage to be the most amusing:

“I was on a failed TV series called ‘Over the Top,’ in which I played an outrageous Greek chef in a hotel. One of the reviews referred to me as the Heinrich Himmler of comedy, and said that [the show’s star] Tim Curry was Hitler, and every Hitler needs his henchman.

“You know who pointed this review out to me? It was Steven [sic] Colbert. Much to his delight. It was years later, when we were working on ‘The Daily Show.’ He said, ‘Did you ever see this?’ He brought it up online, and it was the funniest review because the reviewer went on to say, ‘I have experienced pain in my life, and suffering. I have witnessed the agony of childbirth. It went on and on, and then likened the premiere episode of ‘Over the Top’ to all of those experiences.”

Hahahahaha!! Steve, I’m glad you have such a great sense of humor. Stephen, I’m torn between reading that as mean and finding it utterly hilarious. Considering the history between those two men, I’m going with the latter, but I’m shaking my head even as I’m laughing my tuchus off.

  • CBS News also has a nice profile of Steve posted here. I think this comment from Anne Hathaway on Steve is sweet: “Steve Carell is just the most wonderful, squishy, muffiny, pumpkin, rock star, amazing person you’ll ever meet … There’s no ego there. It’s just a sincere appreciation for what he has and that’s really rare.”
  • Working with Steve was clearly a draw for several people involved in Get Smart. In a story on Steve in amNY (from Newsday), director Peter Segal says this: “I turned the project down several times over the years … Even though I was a fan of the show, I didn’t feel the pieces were coming together … But one day they come to me and say, ‘Steve Carell’s on board to play Max.’ And I said, ‘Hmmm…’”
  • Finally, here’s some video of Steve and Anne Hathaway from Moviefone, Unscripted (shared credit goes to SazzrahUK for this one). Bonus for you fans of The Office: Steve and Anne speculate about getting Stephen to guest star on that show. Watch the video below:

One last reminder: Steve’s appearance on Larry King Live, originally scheduled for Friday night, has been moved to Monday. Tune in to see him then, and again on The Daily Show on Wednesday!

I love these unscripted interviews between the actors themselves. Far better than having someone from Entertainment Tonight.

Please have Stephen Colbert on The Office!!!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  2. Megan says:

I like that Anne Hathaway’s an ‘it-getter’. Also, I agree that Stephen needs to guest on The Office as Gould.

  3. Olivia says:

Aw, that interview is so funny. And I love Anne for having an indiscreet laugh. It makes me feel better about mine.

I totally think Anne Hathaway is cool now. I had no idea how funny she could be. I’m really looking forward to “Get Smart” now. Next weekend is going to be uber busy for me!

  5. tiger says:

Anne Hathaway is really good at talking like that, in that setting. it came off really funny from the both of them.

I think that Stephen would have been excellent on The Office, like as a regular cast member. granted I am utterly content that he has TCR, but The Office fits his type of humor completely.

  6. Lisa says:

Anne Hathaway: It-Getter! Ha! I loved that she mentioned the Doritos campaign and Steve had no idea what she was talking about. I have a newfound respect for her.

Please, please, PLEASE have Stephen on The Office!! How incredibly awesome would that be? I could so see him playing Jan’s ex-husband and he and Steve having some sort of tiff. I’m laughing just thinking about the possibility.

Steve is always the consummate professional and it still amazes me how down-to-earth he is. From everything I’ve read, it sounds like him signing on to play Maxwell Smart was a huge draw for everyone involved. Who can blame them? He oozes talent and charisma… Can’t wait to see Get Smart!

    • Jenny with a Y says:

I love it so much that Anne is an it-getter. I agree Lisa, it was funny that Steve had no idea why she was talking about Doritos.

I vaguely remember seeing an online petition (some time last year) asking that Stephen be cast in a guest starring role on “The Office” as Jan’s ex-husband.

Steve and Anne are such a good team. A lot of times the Unscripted interviews are kind of one sided, especially when one of them is a comedian, and the other isn’t, but they’re great together.

Anne Hathaway has to be one of my favorite actresses- especially now. I love that she’s such a fan of both Steve and Stephen. (And I loved her shoes.)

I really really REALLY hope that either Steve or Stephen can appear on the other’s show at some point. That would be amazing on so many levels.

  8. Ms Interpreted says:

I seriously think my favorite part of the Moviefone interview is at the very end when they’re cutting out; Anne Hathaway says, “I was gonna be really inappropriate and ask if you’ve ever farted on set and either denied it or blamed it on anyone else,” and Steve can only respond, “Oh my God!” That’s just … there are no words. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

  9. GabbyD says:

its always a pleasant surprise when you have something in common with a big star, in this case, an appreciation of carrel and colbert!

i also listen 2 the NPR interview. i’m glad that stewart changed the thrust of TDS. I wouldn’t have enjoyed the old TDS.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  10. Fifi says:

    Stephen as Gould… Haha!!
He definitely needs to cameo in season 5!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Fifi says:

Steve’s going to be on Letterman Tuesday and Kimmel Thursday as well.
Oh, and Regis and Kelly Wednesday. I was so hoping he was going to be on “The Report” this time around, but I guess not.

  11. Sarah says:

Hee! That was my question about whether or not we could ever hope of having Stephen on the Office.

When I went to a TCR taping, I had asked Stephen if he’d ever take a role on the Office, and he told me to talk to Steve Carell about that… and so this worked out well.

I’d love to see Stephen on the Office. I’d also love to see Steve on TCR. I’ll cross my fingers and hope!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  12. Dee says:

wow…melora hardin and stephen? That wud be one hot pair!!
