Friday Free-for-all: Just Under The Wire edition
ByOk, sorry to be a bit late on this, kids. If I told you how crazy this week has been, we’d be here all night. We figured out the problem with the site and the mystery header. In a nutshell, the site was looking at our old server and not our shiny new server due to a Cpanel update on the backend. But Jen fixed it for us, which rocks. Also, this is on a bit of a personal note, but I’d like to congratulate our Junior Senior Correspondent, Jacob, for bringing home a straight-A report card this week. Way to go, kiddo!!
So, here’s my starting question: Do you live in the Dallas area? And if so, would you be willing to meet up with a group of people to go see “The Love Guru” in theaters? Cause I think that might be fun to meet up at Northpark mall and all go as a group to see Stephen on the big screen. I’ll see if there’s interest, and if so I’ll get a Meetup set up. Is this something you might want to do in your own city?

Aw. Too bad I’m not in Dallas. I’m in southeast Houston (NASA area), but will most definitely be seeing this in the theatre. :)

Great job Jacob! Keep up the good work.
I would love it if we did a zoner movie night in the Washington, DC/Northern Virginia area. We could meet at Tysons Corner Center and see “The Love Guru” as a group. I like the idea of going to the Tysons Corner area because it would be convenient for most people in the DC area and it was mentioned in the Tom Davis BKAD segment on TCR.

From what I gather, not may people that post regularly on here live near me, here in our little corner of NC. :( Oh well.
Great job, Jacob! Keep those good grades up next year!
Oh, and love the video on the sidebar. I had a hard time not waking anyone up laughing.

Haha, “Are there gonna be other people there this time?”

Does anyone have the FULL clip of Stephen Colbert dancing behind Barney Frank? I’d like to see it in context. Thanks.

I’m in LA, but really can’t bring myself to watch The Love Guru as much as I love Stephen:( If there is a more directly-related Stephen event in the future, maybe we can meet up:)

Not in Dallas, sorry. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Stephen’s just in the film for just a few minutes, right? Are you just going to watch his segment, then leave? :)
Also, I love the Stephen photo at the top of the page. Not many Stephen photos I don’t like, but it’s always a nice surprise to see one I haven’t seen before. *sigh*

Good job, Jacob! Keep it up. :)
For the free-for-all, a friend informed me the other day that Dana Carvey is doing a new stand-up special on HBO next Saturday, the 14th. We’re excited, since we watched the special he did 10+ years ago, Critic’s Choice, together back when they used to show it on CC practically ALL the time. Now you never see it. :(

yes! — and there’s an exclusive interview with Dana running on The MySpace right now…. looking forward to seeing Dana again, he’s been away too long.
Anyone near Nashville?

I’m in Jersey, unfortunately, no where near Dallas. : ( I’m a few towns away from Princeton, but I’m sort of on the fence about seeing it. Not to mention my sitting time every day is limited to only a few hours because of my back injury. So, unless it’s a Netflix or On Demand movie for now, I’ll probably have to pass until I’m better.

Oh hey, I’m in Jersey, too. The centralish part, exit 10 off the Turnpike. ;-) I’m not sure I’d be willing to sit through The Love Guru, but maybe if something else comes up…
Hope your back improves soon!

That is a brilliant idea!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really hope someone doesn’t steal your idea because you deserve credit for that one. Since “Stephen” loves being the center of attention, that would be the perfect submission.

That is a great idea for the green screen challenge. Another idea I thought of was to put some of Stephen’s character breaks behind McCain. Anything that makes it look like he’s reacting to McCain would work well. I wish I had the software and knowledge to make a green screen video.

I would just LOVE to see someone find the same stock footage that the show uses whenever Stephen talks about bears, and put that on the McCain green screen! I would seriously need some sort of oxygen tank for that…

jentaps,
Please see FAQ #7: ALL comments with links get caught in the moderation queue, and depending on how busy we are, it may take some time for them to be approved. In addition, the spam filtering software on this site — and believe me, we have to deal with a LOT of spam — sometimes catches comments that are not spam; monitoring this queue also takes time. We are doing our best to encourage free discussion in these comments, but we are not infallible, nor are we necessarily watching the site at every moment of the day and night.
If you have submitted a comment that abides by the rules laid out in the FAQ and it has not appeared after a reasonable interval, a polite message to one of us using the information on the “Contact” page informing us of the situation is likely to be the best approach. In the meantime, we thank you for your patience.

This is off topic for the Friday Free For All.
I work at a Kroger grocery store and had twice put a label on a Spicy Sweet Chili flavor Doritos. bag. I really wanted to see wanted to see someone buy that and maybe explain the joke. Part of my plan has been foiled twice by someone. Yes, they have been bought. So i am spreading awareness of wrist violence. But Id’ like to see that.
I put a label on one Friday. And it was still there on yesterday. However, when I checked that bag after lunch to see if there was still there, it was nowhere to be found. I spread joy, but I secretly had one of those Mr. moments in the movie where he cries about Geoffrey betraying him.
Here Mr Noblet would say: Eyes in the back or the store. Eyes in the back of the store. There is something I want you to see. Eyes in the back”

I know someone’d mentioned the Colbert cologne before, but there are posters for it all over Buenos Aires (where I’m studying abroad for six weeks at the moment), and I’ve seen it in stores. It’s super exciting: http://photos-h.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v250/154/2/525925996/n525925996_918839_4574.jpg

I absolutely had to share this…
So, I waltzed into my local library last week and, as always, was sucked into the display of new books it had recently acquired. And I swear, I found a book that truly takes on the show’s thesis of Truthiness.
It’s called True Enough: Learning to Live in a Post-Fact Society by Salon.com columnist, Farhad Manjoo, and as you may suspect, there’s an entire chapter dedicated to Truthiness (which is called “‘Truthiness’ Everywhere”). How this author hasn’t been on the show yet I’ll never know. But I do know that he and Stephen would find endless terms to agree on (maybe that’s why…I suppose people who disagree with Stephen make for better interviews).
I’ve only just started reading it today, and there are some interesting insights so far, and I figured some of you guys would be interested in picking it up. With an entire chapter dedicated to Truthiness, I just had to share this find with everyone.
